The first of 1977-78 season California table grapes was in the Coachella Valley. The first offerings were during the week of May 23, about a normal starting date. Harvest started in the Kern District around mid-July and in the Central San Joaquin Valley in late July. Cold storage holdings peaked in late October at 8 1/2 million packages compared with the peak of 5.7 million a year ear- lier. Cold storage holdings were only exceeded in recent seasons by the 8.7 million held in 1975. Quality of holdings was variable and most offerings after mid-September showed variations in color and conditions. California rail and truck shipments totaled 21,883 cars and carlot equivalents compared with 20,073 a year earlier.

Coachella Valley

The Coachella Valley season started during the week of May 23 and was completed in late July. Ship- ping point prices were first reported on May 31 on Perlettes and were slightly below opening prices a year earlier. However, unlike a year earlier prices held near opening levels of mostly $12.00 throughout the season compared with a drop of $3.00-4.00 a year earlier. Most other varieties followed a similar pattern. Thompson Seedless prices opened at $12.00 in late June, dropped slight- ly to $11.00-12.00 but closed firm at $13.00-14.00 in mid-July.

Coachella Valley growers were again governed by a Marketing Order, operated under the guidance of the Desert Grape Advisory Board (DGAB). All shipments had to meet U.S. No. 1 table grape standards or DGAB requirements.

Southern San Joaquin Valley

Light harvest in the Southern San Joaquin Valley started before mid-July but little volume was obtained until after midmonth. Cardinals and Exotics were first reported on July 20, followed by Thompson Seedless on July 26. Ribiers reached reportable level on August 15 and Emperors by September 20.

Table grape prices were above or close to a year earlier level during most of the season. Emperor prices opened at $8.00-8.50 and held within the $7.00-9.00 range, mostly $7.00-8.00 for much of the season, but closed in a $6.50-7.00 range. Lower prices partly reflected the variable quality of late offerings from storage.

Central San Joaquin Valley

The 19 77 season was highlighted by higher prices, an open harvest season and increased crop production.

F.o.b. prices were first reported on August 1, approximately one week later than the previous year. Trading activity was reported for a period of 211 days compared to 205 days for the previous season. Marketing of the crop was generally orderly, except during the last part of the season when supplies moved slowly under a limited demand. The simple average price (1976 in parenthesis) for Thompson Seedless was $8,26 ($6.13), Ribiers $7.70 ($6.29), Emperors $6.01 ($5.59).

The volume of California table grapes in cold storage was considerably heavier than the previous year. Total holdings of all varieties peaked on October 31 with 8,547,690 packages in cold storage. Thompson Seedless cold storage holdings peaked on August 31 with 2,145,250 packages, including 83,340 processor stock lugs. Ribier holdings peaked on October 15 with 910,810 packages in cold storage. Peak holdings of Emperors were recorded on October 31 with 6,185,610 packages in cold storage.

Lodi District

The first Tokays were shipped from the Lodi District on August 23, a week later than in 1976. Color was lacking and shipments increased slowly. Color and condition continued variable into early October. Quality was also variable. However, color improved late in the season which ended October 19. Prices opened at $7.00, $1.00 above a year earlier. Prices held unchanged until late September, then declined steadily to $5.50 by early October. Prices held at this level for the remainder of the season. The simple average price for the season was $6,17 compared with $4.78 a year earlier. Demand was reported to be moderate during most of the season though active in early October when color improved.

Fresh market Tokay shippers again operated under provisions of the Federal Marketing Agreement, Growers were allowed to pack and market only fresh Tokays which met U.S. No. 1 specifications prior to shipment and in lugs plainly stamped by the Federal-State Inspection Service. Compiled from semi-monthly Cold Storage Reports, Federal-State Market News Service, Fresno, California, 1/ In some years, small quantities of some varieties are in storage before the first storage report on August 31, except September 15, 1975, and after the final report on March 15. 2/ Too few to enumerate« 19 CALIFORNIA RAISIN GRAPES, 1977-78 SEASON General: The 1977 raisin production and marketing season contrasted in nearly all aspects with the 1976 season. Harvesting and drying of grapes f3r raisins took place under near ideal ^^eather conditions, in contrast, the 19". Ô season was plagr'^d with rain and wet weather which severely damaged the crop. Deliveries by growers in 1977 were early and the raisins were generally free of defects. A year earxier deliveries were prolonged by the extensive reconditioning necessitated by the rains. Grower prices for natural Thompson Seedless raisins in 1977 were settled at $840.00 per ton, free tonnage basis, contrasted with the very high $1,050.00 per ton paid in 1976.

Deliveries of 1977 cop raisins through May of 1977 totaled 248,581 swealbox tons^ compared with only 139,226 tons received through May 1976. Shipments of processed raisins through May 1978 were up ^% when compared with those of the corresponding 10 months a year earlier. In addition, 29,096 tons of reserve raisins w^re included in shipments of a year earlier but none were reported for the 1977-78 marketing period.

Production and Marketing Conditions: Near ideal weather conditions prevailed during the 1977 California raisin production season. This was m sharp contrast with a year earlier when unseasonal rains wreaked havoc for many growerr^.

Raisin type grape production wf^ estimated at 1,935,000 short tons in 1977, down from 2,250,000 tons a year earlier. Although production was down 15%, wineries were less competitive for raisin type grapes, taking only 594,000 tons compared with 755,000 tons in 1976 and 1,210,000 tons five years earlier.

Harvest for raisin product-ion started in the Kern District around mid-Augusu, expanded rapidly and reached peak level in the principal producing areas of the Central San Joaquin Valley by early September. Growers harvested as rapidly as practical to avoid possible rain damage to late fruit. This resulted in some labor shortages.

During harvest growers reported that bunch size and weight were Hisapnointing and that yields were below earlier expectations. Maturity was lacking on some early lots where growers harvested before total soluble solids had reached desired levels. However, overall fruit quality was very good.

Some growers were able to complete sun drying without turning due to the loose, light bunches and near ideal weather conditions. Some rain fell in the Kern area on the first lots laid for sun drying. Only a very small percentage of the state's production was involved and damage was limited.

By mid-September 60-70% of the production had been rolled and deliveries to handlers were underway. Harvest for natural sun drying was virtually completed by September 23 and only limited harvest for Golden Seedless continued. However, dehydration of Thompson Seedless held in cold storage continued for several weeks.

The first asking prices for 1977 crop natural Thompson Seedless and Zante Currants were announced by the Raisin Bargaining Association in late September. Asking prices for natural Thompson Seedless ranged $850.00-1,250.00 per sweatbox ton, depending upon the tonnage produced. The initial offer was rejected by handlers. A second offer was made following the October 4 Raisin Administrative Committee's policy meeting. Natural Thompson Seedless raisin production was estimated by the RAC at 217,000 sweatbox tons. The RBA then offered to sell natural Thompson Seedless raisins at $840.00 per ton and Zante Currants at $800 per ton, free tonnage basis. This offer was accepted by handlers, During the same period a small tonnage of loose Muscats traded at $750.00 per sweatbox ton and layer Muscats at $800.00-850.00. Golden Seedless trading ranged $790.00-800.00 early in the f^ason and as high as $850.00 per ton late in the season. A small tonnage of Sultanas trf'ded at $725.00 per ton.

20 Deliveries of 1977 crop raisins through April 1978, according to Raisin Administrative Committee reports totaled 218,728 tons of natural Thompson Seedless, 1,163 tons of loose Muscats, 94 tons of layer Muscats, 427 tons of Sultanas, 15,188 tons of Golden Seedless, 9,133 tons of dipped seedless, 3,261 tons of Zante Currants, and 588 tons of Monukka, all sweatbox weight. Deliveries totaled 248,581 tons of all types compared with 139,226 tons to the corresponding date a year earlier when the production was severely damaged by rain«

Shipments of California raisins during the first 10 months (August-May) of the 1977-78 marketing season total 164,115 to£s, according to RAC reports. All reported shipments were of free tonnage. A year earlier shipments through May totaled 151,649 tons, including 24,096 tons of reserve raisins. U.S. exports of raisins from July 1977 through April 1978 totaled 18,760 tons. During the entire season a year earlier 42,790 tons were shipped, down from 64,875 a year earlier. RAC records for the period August through May showed a total of 39,932 tons of free tonnage of raisins moving in export an increase of 4187o over a yaar earlier but no reserve exports during the period. According to the Bureau of the Census report the largest export market during the first 10 months of the 1977-78 season was Japan with 4,705 metric tons followed by Canada with 2,555, United Kingdom 1,486, and Sweden with 1,315 metric tons.

U.S. raisin imports in 1977 totaled 12,119 metric tons, Afghanistan was the principal supplier with 6,985 tons, followed by Greece with 3,230 tons and Iran with 920 metric tons. In 1976 raisin imports totaled only 1,722 metric tons with Greece the largest supplier at 846 tons followed by Mexico with 628 tons.

California's grape production in 1977 totaled 3,986,000 tons including 1,563,000 tons of wine varieties, 488,000 tons of table varieties, and 1,935,000 tons of raisin varieties. From this wineries crushed a total of 2,337,000 tons or 59% including 1,462,000 of wine varieties, 281,000 table varieties, and 594,000 tons of raisin varieties. The crush accounted for 93% of the wine type grape production, 62% of table grape production and 31% of the raisin type production. The 1977 crush, though large, was still less than the record crush of 1973 (2,481,000 tons). The wine variety crush, however, established a new record high.

Weather conditions in 1977 came very close to being a mirror image of the adverse condi- tions of 1976. A mild winter follwed by a relatively dry, cool, and practically frost free spring resulted in erratic growth patterns, and early budding and leafing. There were reports of excessive shatter in many , reducing their yields. The drought with its reduced water allotments, produced fewer problems than most anticipated due to growers practicing good water management.

During the early harvesting period a pronounced labor shortage affected most of the San Joaquin Valley. The result was a rather sharp increase in harvesting costs and a substantial increase in the use of mechanical harvesters.

In all, 1977 turned out to be a surprisingly good year. The quality of the crop was considered very good. Grapes for crushing were lower in rot, had less insect infesta- tion, and sugar development was reasonably good when compared with recent years. Returns to growers in 1977 averaged well above those received in 1976. varieties brought an average price of $211.41 compared with $144.76 in 1976, black wine varieties $155.54 vs. $129.64, table varieties $99.69 vs. $83.04, and raisin varieties $101.77 compared with $84.72. Prices for all types averaged $150.79, a 30% increase over the 1976 average of $116.08. Prices for individual wine varieties varied widely. As an example traded at 37 individual prices in the Napa District, ranging from $400.00 on up to $990.00 per ton, averaging $603.42 (31% above the 1976 price). If the many different Brix factors were to be included the number of prices increases to 56. In the past year the number of Brix factors used in purchasing grapes for crushing increased from 145 to 285.

A major problem faced by the industry was the overplanting of grape varieties during the past 10 years. Plantings favored red varieties by about two to one during this period but demand currently is heavier to white table than to red.

Consumer demand increased nearly 8% for California table wines during 1977. Sparkling wines shared an even better increase, rising by more than 21%. Dessert wines, however, continued their downward trend falling off 8% from the previous year. The overall picture, though, showed a healthy 6% increase. California was still producing a lot of wine and this was reflected in the year-end inventories. On December 31, 1977 inven- tories included over 383 million gallons of table wines, 10.5% greater than for the same period in 1976. For all wines the inventory was 470 plus million gallons or a 7.8% increase. Heavier inventories were in part due to the increase in wine imports, up around 22% on table types, and nearly 17% overall.

California wine continued to account for around 71% of the total wine marketed in the U.S., other states about 12% and imports around 17%. In recent years imports have made substantial inroads in U.S. wine marketings, and to some extent at the expense of states other than California. continues to dominate the market, representing more than 60% of the total. Table wines have increased annually at a rate of around 8% since 1960 when they represented less than one-third of total wine consumption. U.S. wine production has doubled since 1960 but imports have increased about five fold.

25 Of all wines imported in 1977, 94% came from Western Europe; including about 42% from Italy, 197o from France, 15% from West Germany, 9% from Spain, and over 8%7o from Portugal. Interest in imported wines was strongest in the New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Chicago metropolitan areas, and collectively these areas accounted for over 33% of all import sales. California on the other hand consumes about 10% of all imported wines. In New York state over 40% of the wine consumed is imported. The United States ranks sixth in world wine production. The current world leader is Italy followed in order by France, Russia, Argentina, Spain, United States, Germany, Portugal, Rumania and Chile, the top ten leading producers.

The U.S. continued to be the fastest growing wine market in the world. It can be assumed that increased amounts of wine will be exported to this county and that the market will be very competitive.
