The Politics of the Classical: Language and Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ISSN: 2632-4091 History of Classical Scholarship 20 July 2021 Issue 3 (2021): 267–294 THE POLITICS OF THE CLASSICAL: LANGUAGE AND AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY — CHRISTOPHER STRAY — ABSTRACT This paper offers a historical sociology of Classics, defined as the product of a form of social action that resists change and relativity by stressing timeless exemplary models of culture. In the nineteenth century, the enduring authority of Classics was eroded by nationalism, vernaculars and historicism. The operation of these cultural formations is analysed in relation to class and gender. The internal fissure between Latin and Greek within Classics is also explored. The emergence of disciplinary Classics is traced through a discussion of institutions and the veneration of academic heroes. KEYWORDS institutions, historicism, gender, cultural transfer, politics, language, authority, classicising or several centuries, the languages and civilisations of classical antiquity occupied an exemplary status in European culture and F society. This paper looks at the maintenance of and challenges to this status, and the ways in which its demise led to new forms of knowledge and to new kinds of intellectual authority. It is intended as an exercise in historical sociology.1 Classics has been with us for so long as a field of study that we may assume that we know what it is. Copyright © The British Academy 1997 – all rights reserved Proceedings of the British Academy, 94, 319–354 Charles Oscar Brink 1907–1994 CHARLES OSCAR BRINK was born Karl Oskar Levy on 13 March 1907 in Charlottenburg, a town later to be incorporated within the city of Berlin. Hechangedhissurnameon31August1931andhisfirstnamesin March 1948, having been known already for some time to English friends as ‘Charles’. He died in Cambridge on 2 March 1994. Between 1963 and 1982 Brink published three large volumes on those poems by Horace which concerned poetry itself. These gained for him an authority in every active centre of Latin studies. He was engaged on an edition of Tacitus’ Dialogus de oratoribus andheldtheofficeof President of the International Commission in charge of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (ThLL) when he died. He wanted to be remembered above all as a Latin scholar. It should, however, also be recalled that by middle age he had won some eminence as a historian of post-Aristotelian Greek philosophy and that many credited him with having helped to move British study of ancient philosophy away from an exclusive concernwithPlatoandAristotle. Scholarship cannot claim Brink’s whole person. He played a large role in the struggles which took place over the classical curriculum in English schools and universities during the 1960s and 1970s. He was for many years an influential member of the council of an ancient Cambridge college and could fairly be regarded as one of the founding fathers of a new one. Curran, Maecenas: Images of Ancient Greece and Rome Cathy Callaway, Introduction 1 In the Spring of 1998 I was contemplating the next Greek tragedy to be discussed in my class at the University of Missouri-Columbia, when Victor Estevez came in to chat. He was preparing to retire early for health reasons and was interested in our plans for his retirement celebration. "I want a big party," he told me, "but when Gene retires, he deserves something more. He is a scholar of international renown, and should have a symposium or Festschrift." Hence this idea was born, and I am saddened that Victor did not live to see his own much-anticipated party (he died on August 16, 1998) nor the fruition of his idea to honor Gene. The above anecdote both illustrates how this project got started as well as in what high regard people who know and know of Gene hold him. I first met him in the Spring of 1978 when I visited the University of Missouri-Columbia as a prospective grad student. He gave me a painstakingly thorough tour of the library, sure that everyone treasured books as much as he did, and that this one tour of the library would convince me that UMC was the school to choose. Perhaps i was the library that did it, but I like to think it was Gene and the other people in the Department of Classical Studies that made my choice an easy one.
