This course provided insight into an oft-maligned industry, and allowed students to see lobbying from the perspective of those who practice it every day. Doyle Bartlett is a former Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill who now operates his own lobbying firm in Washington, DC, fo- cusing on the insurance industry. She has written extensively on state politics, serves as a political analyst for WFLA News Channel 8, and is a featured columnist for sayfiereview.com . What’s the state of the Florida governor’s race, as of today? It’s going to be extremely competitive and expensive. Many analysts predict it will be the top race of the 2014 cycle. What will decide the election? Dr. Susan MacManus It’s an old cliché, but the bottom line is that turnout matters. Democratic base turnout drops a lot in midterm elections, primarily young and minority voters. What will be the core themes of the Crist and Scott campaigns? Scott’s campaign will be about economic recovery: “I promised and I did it.” For Crist, it will be bipartisanship and a more inclusive governing approach. Can the Democrats recreate presidential-level turnout? It’s not impossible, but it will be challenging. You can already see that certain issues have the potential to increase minority and youth turnout, particularly felon voting rights, voter suppression, scholarship funding formulas, and the medical marijuana amendment. Educa- tion, the environment, and voting rights are all critical for turning out less likely voters in a midterm year. Are Democrats united behind Crist, or does he have to worry about an enthusiasm gap? It’s too soon to tell. Very few polls have been taken that you can have a lot of faith in. The numbers are all over the map. I don’t think Democrats will gel until after the primary. Some Democrats, particularly older women, are strongly supporting Nan Rich. As in the past, the 2013 confer- ence was held at the Gainesville Hilton on February 1st. Current UF campaigners, pro- spective campaigners, doctoral students, and alumni all joined together at the Hilton to welcome a number of guest speakers. These included an interesting mix of aca- demics, political operatives and consultants, journalists, and elected officials — all of whom shared their perspectives on the elections of 2012 and 2014.

Now that the dust and diapers have started to settle, I am starting to think about what kind of legacy I want to leave for our son. Of course, there’s the legacy of a happy home full of love and support. There are 529 plans to be started and pre-schools to check out. There’s the legacy of a household with a working mom and dad and all of the pride, guilt, and “balance” that comes with it. EDITOR'S LETTER As I enter the holiday season, however, one of the most important legacies I want him to inherit is the legacy of voluntarism. The ideals of “thankfulness” and “giving” are all around us in the months of November and December, but as a member of The Junior League of Tampa I see gratitude and service year-round through our community projects, legislative efforts and fiscal priorities. Investing our time, energy and financial resources in the community serves the mission and the vision of our League. In this issue, you’ll see the investment several women have made to build homes that make voluntarism a priority.     FLORIDA HOSPICES AND PALLIATIVE CARE WELCOMES THE NEW GOVERNOR Representatives from Florida Hospices and Palliative Care were pleased to attend the inauguration of Governor Charlie Crist (R) and the members of the Florida Cabinet who each took the oath of office on Tuesday, January 2. On the East Portico of the Old Capitol, well-wishers and political leaders gathered to watch the administering of the oath of office. Charlie Crist took the oath of office as the 44th Governor of Florida, being sworn in by Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice, Fred Lewis. In his short inaugural speech, Crist began by highlighting some of the threats on the immediate horizon. The issues ranged from oil drilling to property taxes. He promised to protect Florida's environment, our quality of life and economy, and said he would promptly address the twin threats of rising homeowners' premiums and property taxes sapping Floridians' pocketbooks. But the overarching theme of his speech was that Florida is a great place to live – in fact, the greatest place to live -- that the future is bright and the best is yet to come. Offering a pledge of bipartisanship, Crist spoke of areas that both political parties want to see improved and suggested that they can and will work together to achieve affordable health care, expanded worker benefits, improved schools, better protected neighborhoods, and clean rivers, beautiful beaches and coastlines free of oil drilling. He also pledged to make government more open, accessible and understandable; vowing to sign an Executive Order requiring government to communicate is simple language to the extent possible.

For 45 minutes over soft drinks, Bill McBride described his up-from-the- bootstraps background, emphasized that Florida needed to invest more in education and offered himself as the best Democratic candidate for governor. It was a brazen pitch from a soft-spoken man who was a political nobody preparing to challenge a host of formidable opponents. But it worked. "Everybody in the room took an immediate liking to him. After that, it would have been tough to get people off the Bill McBride bandwagon, " said Mike Williams, president of the Florida Building Trades union and host of the meeting. McBride became the Democratic candidate for governor thanks to a winning blueprint that he initially developed 18 months ago, when he was still the longest of long shots, and that he refined in late 2001 after hiring a team of professional consultants, when he still trailed former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno by 51 percentage points. His strategy: Woo key Democratic leaders before his opponents began to mobilize; develop an education plan that would resonate with voters unhappy with Florida's schools; win the early endorsement of the state's unions; avoid attacking Reno; tap into his own political and legal contacts to raise money - and slip past Reno in the final week of the campaign after a barrage of TV ads.
