D. Cornell University 2009 How do religious parties with historically elite support bases win the mass support required to succeed in democratic politics? This dissertation examines why the world’s largest such party, the upper-caste, Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has experienced variable success in wooing poor Hindu populations across India. Briefly, my research demonstrates that neither conventional clientelist techniques used by elite parties, nor strategies of ideological polarization favored by religious parties, explain the BJP’s pattern of success with poor Hindus. Instead the party has relied on the efforts of its ‘social service’ organizational affiliates in the broader Hindu nationalist movement. The dissertation articulates and tests several hypotheses about the efficacy of this organizational approach in forging party-voter linkages at the national, state, district, and individual level, employing a multi-level research design including a range of statistical and qualitative techniques of analysis. In doing so, the dissertation utilizes national and author-conducted local survey data, extensive interviews, and close observation of Hindu nationalist recruitment techniques collected over thirteen months of fieldwork. The report deals with the problem and throws light on how the absence of effective definition and law, to deal with trade in ‘Human Misery’ is proving handicap in protecting the Constitutional and Human Rights of the individuals and that the already marginalised sections of the society are the most affected. The report is a clear indication of how the unequal status of women in our society can lead to atrocities, exploitation & innumerable assault on her body, mind and soul, in each and every stage of their lives beginning from womb to helpless old age. The female foeticide in Haryana and Punjab; on one hand, if it is killing several innocent lives before they open the eyes on the other is causing serious gender imbalance which finally is devastating the lives of equally other who have been lucky enough to see this world. Like breeds the like, the evil of killing females in womb is giving rise to a chain of several other social evils of which the female gender is at the receiving end. -

Extractive States and Layered Conflict: The Case of Jharkhand’s Electricity Sector Working Paper Mapping Power Project Rohit Chandra June 2017 Project Overview This working paper was written as part of a collaborative research project, Mapping Power, which aims to provide a state-level analysis of India’s electricity governance. The project is coordinated by Sunila S. Kale (University of Washington, Seattle), Navroz K. Dubash (Centre for Policy Research), and Ranjit Bharvirkar (Regulatory Assistance Project), and carried out by a team of 12 researchers. The research explores the views and perspectives of various stakeholders and organizations in each state and how they will be affected by new initiatives in India’s electricity sector, as well as the forces and constraints that shape decision-making in electricity governance. Using data from qualitative interviews with key informants buttressed by quantitative data, the research team covered 15 states as part of the analysis: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
