May 14, 1929,

Mr, H. G, V/right, Secretary, International fraternity of Delta Sigaa Pi, 1502 Fisher Building^ Chicago, 111.

Dear i&. Ysfrlght:

I am adTised that the members of Beta Alpha Sigiaa of the Department of Business Administration in the School of Science and Literature of the Alahama Polytechnic Institute are petitioning for a charter to organize a chapter of Delta Signa Pi at this institution. I am very glad to lend my whole hearted support to this petition,

I am personally acquainted with all the members of Beta Alpha Sigma and I ICQOw they have been carefully selected from among our best young men in this department. They are juniors and seniors 'ffho stand high scholastically and who have shown themselves, in my dealings with them, to be dependable young men. liy experience as dean of the School of Commerce at Oklahoma A, & M. Qollege for several years enables me to appraise the merits and abilities of college men and I have no hesitancy in saying that the petitioners in this instance are of as high quality, if not higher, than are usually found in high standard fraternities such as yours,

I presume you are familiar with the fact that it was only two years ago that a serious effort was made to develop the work in Business Adminis tration at this institution, Yftien I carae here two years ago I found a department which had but two instructors. This year we have five full time instmctors and a practising attorney who handles our work in Business Law, Next year two additional instructors will be added to the staff. One of than, a C. P. A. with successful experience in both practise and teaching, has been procured to take charge of our Accounting. By nezt year we expect to have on our staff of eight men no fewer than four and possibly five who will have the Ph. D. degree, or it's equivalent, in the lines of work in their charge.

If you desire further information relative to our work here, I shall be glad to supply the same upon request. Trusting that the petition of Beta Alpha Si@na may receive favorable consideration by your fraternity, I am

Very trulv yours.

Per a long time there was felt the need of

either a honorary or professional fraternity in the business department at the Alabama Polytechnic Insti tute,

In 1926 the need of some organization v.ras brought out so much by the growth of the department, that a club known as the Social Science Club was formed.

This club met once a v/eek and was open to mem_bershlp of any person registered in any economic course. Pro grams consisting of talks by both the faculty and stud

ent members on the current topics of the day, that were of interest to the students, was the usual procedure.

Once each semester a banquet was held to encourage in terest In the society/.

This club did not make any advancement and it was soon seen that something else was needed. Some of the outstanding seniors of the department tried to form a honorary fraternity but owing to the adminlstra- tion then In office the plan failed.

With the coming of a new dean of the comm erce department and a new president with progressive ideas, the students began to think of the question once more. The president of the Social Science Club sent letters to nine members of the club who had and were taking an active part in the school. All of these members of the club were in the business depart ment.

These nine men met on the niprht of Oct, 4,

1928 and decided to try to form an hohorary and pro fessional fraternity. Committee's were appointed to draw up a constitution and a set of by-laws. Other

Committee's were appointed to see the dean of the de partment. Dr. John W. Scott and the President, Dr.

Bradford Knapp. ?^lth the aid of Prof. H. M. Herrin of the economic departm.ent a constitution and hy^laws weire drawoi up and sent to the executive council of the college to be passed iipon. With Dr, Scott and Dr.

Knapp back of the move it passed and we came Into being as Beta Alpha Sif?ma, a local Honorary and Professional

Fraternity in Business.

The officers for the first year Vi^ere, Otis

-President DeVaughn- , V. L. Collins--Vlce President, p. R, Daugette--Secretary and C. P. Austin Jr.--

Treasury. Daugette received his degree at the end of the first semester and E. H. Killgore was elect ed to succees him. The term of the above officers expired in April and the following men were elected

to succeed them: T. M. Roberts Jr, --President , E. Vlf,

Howell--Vice President, W. W, Rogers- -Secretary and

A. M, Sev/ell--Treasury, ';

The next thing was to move forward and not

stand at the place we had gained. We realized that as a local we could not do the things that we wanted to do and to meet the needs of the growing business department we had to try and go into some National

Professional Fraternity. We consid-ered two nationals and as tbere was a member of each one of these nation als in our department, we invited, them to tell us all

they could about their respective fraternities. After hearing about both fraternities we ixnanomously decided

to petition Delta Sigma Pl. We invited Prof. Allen, a member of Delta Sigma Pl, to come in with us and he accepted.

Under Prof. Aliens advice v/e got in touch with

Mr, Wright and Inquired about petitioning Delta Sigma Pi. He gave is the details we needed and ln.formed us

that Mr. V^rlght would be through the south and would

like to visit us. He made us that visit on March 21th.

and it was Indeed a helpful visit to us. He explained

many details to us and showed how to go futher in our

work.

But while we were deciding on the fraternity

to petition and corresponding with Mr. Wright, we were

not inactive, /e are supposed to have our meetings bi

monthly but owing to the fact that we have been so busy,

we have had to meet every week. We have undertaken re

search problems andj have several finished. It has been

our pollcTf to have a banquet once a month in order to

better the social side of the fraternity.

ALABAMA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE HISTORY

of

Alabama Polytechnic Institute

The session of the Alabama Conference of the

Methodist Church held at Eutaw in 1865 determined up on the location of a male college in the bounds of that religious body. As Eiitaw was located on the west ern part of the state more delegates from that part of the state were present. The result was that the col lege was located at Greensboro, Alabama, in the west ern part of the state.

The Methodists In the eastern part of the state were not satisfied, with the conference's decision to locate the college at Greensboro and immediately be gan raising money for a school to be established in the eastern part of the state. A charter was issued for the first Alabama Male College on February 1, 1855.

Trustees were namid and taking immediate action, lo cated the school at Auburn. In 1857 the cornerstone of the main building was laid and the first session opened October 1, 1859, In November of the same year at a Methodist

Conference at Eufaula, the new college presented its

claims for denominational support. After heated de bates it v/as decided to take the East Alabama Male

College under the patronage of the Methodist Church,

thus making tvjo Methodist Institutions in the state.

The civil war came on and the college v/as compelled to close. The regular session began again in 1866.

The trustees of the East Alabama Male College knew that through government aid the college could be come an Agricultrural and Mechanical College. Plans for the organization of this type of college had been put into concrete form, and the trustees made a ten der of the property over to the state which was accept ed by the legislature in 1872.

The Agricultrual and Mechanical College was organized in the first big step Auburn made and it was fostered by Government aid. There was a partial re organization of the faculty and a rearrangem_ent of the course of study.

In 1887 the main building burned with all its contents.

from the legislature, the present main building and chemical laboratory were erected.

There was always a prejudice against an Ag ricultural College in the state, and for this reason the legislature changed the name of the institution

In 1899 to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. The act stated that the college has developed as was originally desigr).ed into an institution where were not only the branches that relate to Agricultural arts, but also to the sciences and arts In general that re late to the industrial development of modern civili zation. The period from 1900 to 1915 was one of in creased development and enrollement. The Alabama

Polytechnic Institute become known not only through the south but the entire country. All departments vvere enlarged, new build_lngs v/ent up everywhere and. It be- cam.e an institution of which the state was justly proud.

During the last few years the Alabama Pol^r- technlc Institute has come to the front in all branhes of technical training, and its agricultural school is recognized as second to none in the Southland. The co-ed_ucatlona.l facilities have also been Increased and there are now some two hundered and fifty young women

in attendance. These, with fifteen hundred male stu dents, bring the total enrollment to approximately

seventeen hundred and fifty.

The process of expansion is now going on as never before and at the present the issue is an exten

sive building program. The Ram.sey Engineering Build

ing was completed In 1926. The Extension Department

Building is nearing completion. A program for the con

struction of four additional buildings, including a new Commerce Building, is now under consideration.

SCHOOL

of

BUSINESS ADMlNISTPJiTION H I S T 0 R Y

of

The School of Business Administration

In the year of 1924, the Alabama Polytechnic

Institute established, a Department of Economics and

Business Administration offering courses available in

repreductive collegiate schools and business in which

"undergraduates could secure professional training for

commercial pursuits. A course in economics had been

available previously and had for a long period been re

cognized of all g"raduates taking the Bachelor of Science

degree.

The purpose of this school is to give a thorough

scientific training in the fundamental principles of business administration, which, with supplementary ex

perience, will prepare the graduate for responsible positions in the business world.

Modern business has become so complex in its

organizationa and conduct that it is no longer possible,

desirable, or necessai^ to learn It, as formerly by method of apprenticeship. Much of what was once learn

ed by apprenticeship can be more easily and quickly ac

quired by Instruction, and the student can more readily secure an understanding of the fundamental principles.

It is wasteful to have each lndivid.ual learn by costly

experience and knowledge have become so systematized

and organized that there exists a body of principles

.for scientific study.

It is not assumed that college training for business can take the place of actual experience, but

the student can be so trained in the principles iinder-

lying the conduct of business that when he enters it his understanding is more comprehensive, his advance will be more rapid and his service more valuable,

HISTORY:

Before other courses in business v/ere offered,

the course in economics was taught by the Head of the

of Department English. This was for many years Dr.

C. C. Thach, President of the College from 1902 to 19-

21, who was head of the Department of English until

1911 and from then to 1929 Head of the Department of

Economics. Prof. J. R. Rutland of the English Depart ment who succeeded him as teacher of Economics, taiight

the course until Professor J. B. Clark came in 1924 to be head of a reorganized and expanded department of

Economics. Under Dr, Clark and his assistants the department offered a sufficient number of courses to

enable students to get a. degree in Business Admini

stration. He resigned in 1926 to accept the position

of Dean of Judson Oollege at Marlon, Alabama.

In the same year Dr. J. !. Scott was appoint

ed Head of the Department of Business Administration

and Dean of the Academic Division. He cam.e to Auburn

.highly recomjnended, having served as Dean of the School

of Business Administration of Oklahoma Agriculture and

Mechanical College and in other positions of responsi

bility. Under his direction, the Department of Busi

ness Administration has grown in the niAmber of courses,

in number of students, and in ntiraber of Instructors,

until his division is one of the largest in the Ala

bama Polytechnic Institute. ?,hen he cam.e, there were

three men teaching biisiness courses, now there are five,

and next year there will be seven.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION:

Applicants for admission to Alabama Polv-technic

Institute must have completed a four-year course of an

accredited high school, must hold a , certificate show

ing the completion of fifteen units in an accredited

if high school, or, attendance is less than four years, take an entrance examination.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE:

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration may be conferred on students, who have received one hundred forty-four accredited hours (one hundred twenr^y- eight hours of reqiiired. work and at least sixteen hours of electives), and having two hun dred eighty-elg;ht quality points. (Quality points are based on grades as follows: grades from 10% to 79% give two qx.iality points, from 80% to 89;l give three quality points, from 90% to 94% give four quality points and above 95,% five quality points.) The degree of Master of Science in Business Administration may be conferred on the completion of two additional years and writing a ten-thousand word thesis on some business subject,

PLAN OF CURRICULUM:

The curriculum is not planned to give quick training; for a narrov/ vocation. It is designed to pre pare one for advancement to an executive career in one of the major activities of business or for the direc tion of his ovm business. It gives the student a gen eral viev/ of the subject, then a course in specific phases v/hich he may follov/. All of the economic sub- jects are linked together. One depends upon the other

as a base. Therefore the curriculum is planned to pro

vide study of business administration as it deals with

labor, social regulation, financing, produ.ction, mark

eting, and promotion of all as a correlated v/hole.

In the School of Business Administration there

is a set of courses which Is mane out by the Dean with

the help of some professors. He must have had, before,

finishing, 19 hours of English, 18 hours of history,

6 hours of mathematics, 6 hours of science, 8 hours of military training, 5 hours of education, 6 hours of for- '

eign language, 60 hours of economics and 16 hours of

electives in the junior years, v/hich must be approved

by the Dean.

1925-26 160

1926-27 274

1927-28 211

1928-29 2.53
