DESCENDANCY of RICHARD YSAC (b c1492) and AGNES [YSAC] Their parents are not known to us

Note 1: much of the information in this Section is derived from records of the late Richard T Foose, provided to us by Phyllis Gerrick of Ridgecrest CA and other researchers. Note 2: some information is from various genealogies posted on websites on the Internet and is undocumented. Especially on the earlier generations of the family, we are doubtful of its occuracy, so we include it here FOR INTEREST ONLY at this time. We hope that it may serve as a starting point for a future researcher to pursue. Note 3: material in smaller type is written by BFE (Barbara Ann Fisher), wife of KFE (Karl Frederick Edler Jr), while larger type material is from our family history datafile maintained by KFE. Note 4: names of direct ancestors of KFE are underlined.

I. Richard 1 Ysac , born about 1492 Foston, Lincolnshire, , married Agnes [Ysac].1 He died after 1531 (when he served as a witness) and before 1547 (when Agnes' will indicates that she was then a widow1).

A. Sir William 2 Isacke was born about 1520 Foston, Lincolnshire, England. In 1556 he was clerk of Westborough.6

1. Richard 3 Isaacke , born about 1543 Foston, Long Bennington, Lincolnshire, England,1 married Alice Goodborne about 1568 Foston.1 He was a prosperous yeoman in Long Bennington. He was buried 16 Jun 1591 Foston,2 age about 48. Eight children: Margaret; Marjorie; Agnes; Marie; Jane; Ellen; Elizabeth; and Edward.2

a. Edward 4 Isaacke was baptized 22 Nov 1595 Foston, according to Long Bennington, Lincoln Bishop's Transcript.1,2 He married Jane Cheiny 6 May 1605 Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, England.1 She was born about 1582. Her name was sometimes spelled Cheyney. Possibly ten children, including Richard, Henry; and Elizabeth.2

Edward was probably about ten years old when he was baptized. We have found other situations with similar time periods between birth and baptism.

i. Richard 5 Isaacke was baptized (or christened) 23 Feb 1606 Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, England,1,3 according to Fulbeck, Lincoln Bishop's Transcript.2 He married Elizabeth Sharpe 30 Oct 1632 Foston, Lincolnshire; ten children1 baptized (or christened) Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, England, according to the Great Gonerby, Lincoln Bishop's Transcript or the Lincoln Parish Register. Elizabeth was born Basingthorpe, Lincolnshire, and christened 24 Feb 1612. Her parents were William Sharpe and Elizabeth Coney . Richard died after 1655 Lincolnshire.

-- See page 11a-3 for some information about the SHARPE and CONEY families --

a) Richard6 Isaack was baptized (or christened) 19 Sep 1633.

He is said to have died about 1700, age about 67. The estate of a man named Richard Isaack was inventoried 24 May 1700, according to MD tax lists, which would indicate that he had immigrated to America, but we are doubtful that this is our Richard. Under the rule of primogeniture, our Richard would have remained at the family seat. A "Mr Isaac" has been found in records of Fulbeck, Lincolnshire in the appropriate time period.

b) Mary6 Isaack was baptized (or christened) 14 Mar 1634. She died 24 Mar 1635 Great Gonerby, age one.

c) Sutton6 Isaack, baptized 9 Jan 1637, married Jeane Harvey 2 Mar 1662 St Bartholomew, London. He was a clockmaker in London. Later he moved to St Helena Island, where he and his second wife Elizabeth [Isaacke] raised cattle. He died early Aug 1713, age abt 76, buried St Helena. First marriage, six children: Elizabeth, Susanna (married Thomas Swallow, daughter Mary), Naomi, Michael, Leah, and Sutton Jr. One of the daughters married John French.1 Another married (--?--) Edward, children Susanna and Steven; and another married (--?--) Collier, children Edward and Thomas.

d) Edward6 Isaack, also known as Edward Isaac, was baptized 26 Dec 1639. He married Jane [Isaack]; two children:4 Sutton and Edward Jr. Edward Sr died about 1689 Calvert Co MD,4 age about 60.

On page 11a-4 is an interesting family story about Edward coming to America with his brother Joseph. Edward transported himself and one other person in 1665. Later, he must have transported a number of people, because he eventually had headrights to 700 acres. In any case, he settled in Calvert Co MD by 1676 and purchased 400 acres on the upper cliffs at Plum Point.11

i) Capt Sutton7 Isaac, born about 1709 in MD, is said to have owned Plum Point and had 15 slaves.4,16 He married Mary [Isaac]; at least one child.

(a) Sarah8 Isaac, born before 1739 Calvert Co MD, married James Weems about 1749 Anne Arundel Co MD; at least six children. He was born 22 May 1731 Calvert Co. His parents were David Weems/Wemyss (born about 1706 Fyfe, Scotland) and Elizabeth Lane (born about 1708 Anne Arundel Co).21 James died 4 Nov 1784 Calvert Co, age 53.

(i) Sutton Isaac9 Weems, born before 1765, represented Calvert Co in the Assembly in the 1820s. He died 20 Mar 1825 Annapolis MD, age at least 60.

h) Cheiny-Sharpe6 Isaack was baptized (or christened) 12 Jun 1651. We don't know whether this baby, named after two grandparents, was a boy or girl. In any case, the child did not live long, dying 24 Sep 1652 Great Gonerby, age about 15 months.1

i) Dorcas6 Isaack was baptized (or christened) 1 Sep 1653.

j) Naomi6 Isaack, born 1 Apr 1655, was christened 11 May 1655.

– PARTLY UNVERIFIED DATA FOR STUDY/REVIEW ONLY, PLEASE SEE {PREFACE} TO THIS DOCUMENT -- “All-People” {Table of Contents} Page 11a- 3 INFORMATION ABOUT COLLATERAL FAMILIES Note: Our lineages ares connected with many other early Maryland families, and these relationships can be confusing! We include a small amount of information about some of these other families, below and throughout this Section Caution -- this material is FOR INTEREST ONLY, as we have not verified much of it. We hope readers will find this material interesting, and perhaps useful as a starting point for further research.

-- Some information about the SHARPE family -- (referenced on page 11a-1)

I. William Sherp may have been born about 1482 and may have had son Richard. William died 5 Nov 1530, age about 48. Note: some of the genealogies we have seen trace these early families to the 13th and 14th centuries, but we haven't found supporting references.

A. Richard Sharpe may have been born about 1510, and may have had son Richard.

1. Richard Sharpe may have been born (or baptized) about 1558. He married Jane [Sharpe] and may have had son William.

a. William Sharpe , baptized 31 Jan 1588/89 Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, married Elizabeth Coney , below. He may have died about 1615, age perhaps about 27.

i. Elizabeth Sharpe , born Basingthorpe, Lincolnshire, was christened 24 Feb 1612. She married Richard Isaacke , page 11a-1.

-- Some information about the CONEY family -- (referenced on page 11a-1)

Note: Some say Richard Coney was descended from William Conny, born 1324. Many of the genealogies on the Internet trace lineages even earlier than those we show. We include this material here FOR INFORMATION ONLY.

I. William Coney was born about 1465. He died about 1509, age about 44.

A. Richard Coney was born about 1500. He died 12 Apr 1545, age about 45.

1. Sir Thomas Coney, Knight of Basingthorpe, born about 1529, married Alice Leigh . She was probably born about 1540. He died 15 Oct 1611, age about 82. She probably died about 1621, age about 81.

THE LEIGH FAMILY -- Alice's father was probably Sir Thomas Leigh, born about 1509, said to be Lord Mayor of London. He died 17 Nov 1572, age about 63. Alice's mother was probably Alice Barker ,18 born about 1525. She died about 1600, age about 75.

a. Sir Thomas Coney II , Knight of Basingthorpe, born about 1561, married Anne Upton and married Elizabeth Patten. It's not known which wife was Elizabeth Coney's mother -- probably Anne, possibly Elizabeth. He inherited the manor of Basingthorpe (sometimes spelled Bassingthorpe), and they lived in Basingthorpe Hall. We have seen a picture of the house, now smaller than it was originally but still impressive.9

i. Sir Sutton Coney's name was carried on by his nephew and grand-nephews. It's not known which of Sir Thomas' wives was his mother. We think her family must have been connected with the Sutton family, but haven't yet found any real information.

ii. Elizabeth Coney , born about 1592 South Stoke, Lincolnshire, married William Sharpe , above.

– PARTLY UNVERIFIED DATA FOR STUDY/REVIEW ONLY, PLEASE SEE {PREFACE} TO THIS DOCUMENT -- “All-People” {Table of Contents} Page 11a- 4 JOSEPH ISAACK (b c1642) and MARGARET (--?--) [BROWN] [CLIFFORD] (b c1651) and their descendants from page 11a-2 Joseph's parents were Richard Isaacke and Elizabeth Sharpe Margaret's parents are not known to us

(e) Joseph 6 Isaack , also known as Joseph Isaac, was born about 1642 Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, England.1,6 He married Margaret (--?--) [Brown] [Clifford] ; four children. She was born about 1651. We haven't been able to identify her parents; some say her father might be Ninian Beall, but he apparently had no daughter named Margaret. In any case, she first married William Brown; son Joseph Brown. She married (--?--) Clifford; son James Clifford. Joseph Isaack died between 29 Dec 1688 (date of will) and 23 Feb 1689 (date will proved) Calvert Co MD, age about 46.3 His estate was inventoried by Maj Ninian Beall and William Lewis at £59/18/6, including silver plate and spectacles.6 After Joseph's death, Margaret married Joshua Hall. She died about 1696, age about 45. We haven't been able to determine when Joseph came to America. He executed his first land patent 24 Feb 1681/82.6 The 100-acre tract "Giant's Range" was located in Calvert Co on the west side of the Patuxent River, which is now in Prince George's Co. A family story is that Joseph came with his brother Edward, page 11a-2. They were officers in the English army, sent to America in charge of Scottish prisoners of war who were to be sold to planters as indentured servants.16 We don't know how much of this story is factual. One interesting item in the story is that Alexander Magruder, page 11a-14, was one of those under the charge of the Isaacks.

JOSEPH's WILL6 -- his son Richard was to receive 100 acres at age 21, and a mare (whose first mare colt was to go to his sister Elizabeth), five head of cattle (including one cow named Mulberry), and one gun. At age 23, Richard was to give to his brother Joseph Jr two thousand pounds of tobacco the following year, and another two thousand the year after that. Son Joseph Jr was to receeive one cow and her calf, one young mare colt (whose first mare colt was to go to his sister Rebecca), and one gun. Daughter Elizabeth was to receive five head of cattle (including cows named Lady, Gentle, and Gift) and a feather bed and bolster. Stepson (called son-in-law in the will) Joseph Brown was to receive a young mare, a sow known by her long tail, one young white sow, and a "long" gun. He was to stay with his mother until Christmas of the next year, and then have half of that year's tobacco. Daughter Rebecca was to receive a heifer and a feather bed and bolster. Stepson (called son-in-law) James Clifford was to receive a calf, and must stay with his mother until he would be age 21. There were various other items, including a request that all his children should have one year's schooling. His widow Margaret was willed her dower and was appointed executrix, with residuary to his four children.

i) Elizabeth 7 Isaac , born about 1677,7 married Jonathan Symons ; eleven children, with many connections with other familes in several Sections of this document. Jonathan's plantation was "Landover" in Prince George's Co MD. He died about 1726. Elizabeth died about 1757 Prince George's Co, age about 80.

With the marriage of Elizabeth Isaac and Jonathan Symons our YSAC lineage joins our SYMONS lineage – see {Section 10c} --

ii) Richard7 Isaac, born about 1679, married Sarah Pottenger -- see page 11a-7.

iii) Rebecca7 Isaac, born about 1680, married Charles Walker -- see page 11a-9.

iv) Joseph7 Isaac Jr was born about 1681. He died about 1703, age about 22.

Note: some say Joseph Isaac Sr and his wife Margaret also had daughter Ann, birthdate uncertain, who married her half-brother Joseph Brown, but we haven't found supporting evidence.

REBECCA ISAACK (b c1645) and JOHN BROOKE (b 1640) and their descendants and REBECCA ISAACK and THOMAS TASKER (b c1641) and their descendants from page 11a-2 Rebecca's parents were Richard Isaacke and Elizabeth Sharpe John's parents were Robert Brooke and Mary Mainwaring Thomas' parents were (--?--) Tasker and Ann [Tasker] f) Rebecca6 Isaack, born about 1645 Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire, is said to have been transported about 1670. She married John Brooke; possibly two children, names not known. He had land on Battle Creek, Calvert Co MD. His parents were Robert Brooke and Mary Mainwaring. Born 20 Sep 1640, John died about 1677, age about 37.13 Secondly, Rebecca married Capt Thomas Tasker as his second wife; three children. She died about 1695, age about 50. Born about 1641, Yorkshire, he died Battle Creek between 18 Jul 1700 (when he attended a Council meeting) and 31 Aug 1700 (date his 16 Mar 1699 will was probated), age about 59.14

-- See page 11a-6 for some information about the BROOKE family --

Battle Creek was named after the town of Battle (or Battaile), Sussex, birthplace of John's father's first wife.

THOMAS TASKER -- we know his mother was Ann [Tasker], because she is mentioned in his will, but we don't know his father's first name. Thomas immigrated to MD as a redemptioner (reasons not known to us) about 1668 or 1673 and settled in Calvert Co on a tract called "The Ordinary". He became one of the wealthiest men of his day as a merchant, ship owner, and landholder. Among other activities, he served as justice of Calvert Co, captain of foot in the Calvert Co militia, member of the Council of Maryland and as Treasurer.

Note: although it is generally agreed that Thomas Tasker married "widow Brooke" as his second wife, there are some who say he married someone other than Rebecca. The main reason we think that Thomas' second wife most likely was Rebecca Isaack [Brooke] is that, in connection with the probate of Thomas' will, she referred to her "brother Richard Isaack".

i) Eleanor Elizabeth7 Tasker, born about 1686, married Thomas Addison -- see page 11a-10.

ii) John7 Tasker married Elinor Brooke 1705. Her parents were Thomas Brooke and Ann [Brooke]. John lived in Calvert Co MD, and died about 1711. Secondly, Elinor married Charles Sewell.

iii) Benjamin7 Tasker Sr, born about 1690, married Ann Bladen -- see page 11a-11.

-- Some information about the BROOKE family13 -- (referenced on page 11a-5)

I. Richard Brooke, born about 1530, married Elizabeth Twyne about 1552; six children. They were buried Whitchurch, Hampshire, England; some researchers have traced the Brooke lineage into much earlier generations.

A. Thomas Brooke, born about 1561, married Susan Foster; ten children. He received a BA degree from Oxford, was a barrister and member of Parliament 1604-1611. He was buried 17 Sep 1612 Whitchurch, and she was buried beside him the next day, in a marble tomb with their figures sculptured, lying side by side. The Twyne coat of arms is quartered on the tomb.

1. Robert Brooke, born 3 Jun 1602 London, received BA and MA degrees from Oxford. He married Mary Baker 25 Feb 1627. She was born Battle, Sussex, seven miles from Hastings, where the famous battle was fought 14 Oct 1066. She died about 1634. He married Mary Mainwaring 11 May 1635. As a friend of the monarchy and a Privy Counselor to Lord Baltimore, Robert arrived in the Patuxent River 30 Jun 1650 on his own ship, with his wife, ten children, twenty-one male servants, seven "maid servants" and a pack of fox hounds. (It is said there are descendants of the fox hounds in the county today.) Robert and his two oldest sons took the oath of fidelity to the Proprietary 22 Jul 1650. He received 2000 acres in St Mary's Co, which became Charles Co 30 Oct 1650, and much other land, and became a planter. However, when the Puritans deposed Gov Stone in 1652, Robert and five others took control in the name of Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth. In 1654 Charles Co was renamed Calvert Co. Robert died 20 Jul 1655, age 53. Mary died 29 Nov 1663. First marriage, four children, including: Thomas (below); and Baker (1628-1678, married Anne Calvert, daughter of Lord Baltimore's brother and his wife Ann Brent). Second marriage, eleven children, including John, page 11a-5.

a. Thomas Brooke, born 23 Jun 1632 Battle, Sussex, married Elinor Hatton about 1658. He was a wealthy planter, and served in many public offices. Seven children, including three sons who became Jesuit priests, and daughter Elinor, who married her step-brother Philip Darnall and married William Diggs. . After Thomas died, Elinor Hatton [Brooke] married Henry Darnall (c1645-1711), owner of the Woodyard lumbering facility and tobacco plantaion, who owned 116 slaves. His son Philip married Elinor's daughter Elinor. The Darnall family owned "His Lordship's Kindness" plantation.

The part that is of interest to us is that the boundaries of some of Thomas Brooke's land, which became part of Prince George's Co in 1696, are indicated by stone markers carved with his initials. Later this became the site of a small village called TB, located at the intersection of I-301 and MD-5.

i. Thomas Brooke, born about 1659 Calvert Co MD, married Ann [Brooke]. She died after 1687. He married Barbara Dent before 1699. She was born posthumously about 1676. Her parents were Thomas Dent and Rebecca Wilkinson. Barbara died about 1764, age about 88. First marriage, four children, including Elinor (married John Tasker, son of Thomas Tasker and Rebecca Isaack, page 11a-5), and Sarah (married William Dent, her stepmother's brother; later married Philip Lee, whose son Corbin married Eleanor Addison, page 11a-10). Second marriage, eight children.

BARBARA DENT's FAMILY -- Peter Dent married Margaret Nicholson; son Thomas married Rebecca Wilkinson; daughter Barbara married Thomas Brooke. Secondly, Rebecca Wilkinson [Dent] married Col John Addison; son Thomas, page 11a-10. Rebecca's parents were Rev William Wilkinson (first Anglican minister posted to MD) and Naomi Hewes/Hughes.

ELEANOR ELIZABETH TASKER (b c1686) and THOMAS ADDISON and their descendants from page 11a-5 Eleanor Elizabeth's parents were Thomas Tasker and Rebecca Isaack Thomas' parents were John Addison and Rebecca Wilkinson [Dent] i) Eleanor Elizabeth7 Tasker, born about 1686, married Col Thomas Addison 21 Apr 1701; two children. He was born about 1679 St Mary's Co MD. His parents were Col John Addison and Rebecca Wilkinson [Dent]. Eleanor died 10 Feb 1706, age about 20. Thomas married Eleanor Smith, a sister of his son-in-law, 7 Jan 1709; five children. She was born about 1690. Her parents were Col Walter Smith and Rachel Hall, whose son Richard married Thomas' daughter Elinor. Thomas was a member of the Council of Maryland 1721-1727. He died 17 Jun 1727, age about 48. Eleanor died 19 Jan 1761, age about 71.

THOMAS ADDISON's father, Col John Addison, was born Westmoreland, immigrated to Prince George's Co MD about 1667. He married Rebecca Wilkinson [Dent] about 1677. Her parents were Rev William Wilkinson and Naomi Hewes/Hughes. Rebecca's first husband was Thomas Dent (eight children, page 11a-6). John received considerable Dent property upon his marriage to Rebecca. He built Oxon Hill mansion (which burned 1895); was one of the founders of Broad Creek Episcopal Church, Oxon Hill MD; and was a member of the Council of Maryland 1691, 1693-1700, 1702, and 1704. He returned to England and died there about 1705/6. The part of special interest to us is the "Oxon Hill" estate, which is located about 15 miles from where we live.

JOHN ADDISON's father, Lancelot Addison, born about 1632, resided at "The Hill", Westmoreland, England. He married Dorothy Danvers; son John. She was born about 1635. Lancelot died 20 Apr 1703, age about 71, buried Litchfield Cathedral. She married Philip Hackett Esq. She was buried 30 Jun 1719 Shakerston Church, Leicestershire, age about 84.

(a) Rebecca Tasker8 Addison, born 3 Jan 1703/4, married Hon James Bowles, and married Col II -- see page 11a-13.

(b) Eleanor8 Addison,8,14,23 born 20 Mar 1704/5, married Bennett Lowe, who died 1722. She married Col Richard Smith, who died 1732. She married Capt Posthumous Thornton of Calvert Co, who died 1738. She married Corbin Lee 31 Jan 1754. He died about 1773. She died about 1777 Oxon Hill Manor, age 72. Second marriage, five children: Walter, Richard Jr, John Addison, Rebecca, and Rachel.

BENNETT LOWE's FAMILY -- his father was Lt Col Henry Lowe, whose family can be traced to the early 15th century in Cheshire. His sister Jane's second husband was Charles Calvert, third Lord Baltimore.2 Bennett's mother was Susannah Maria Bennett [Darnall]. Her father was Richard Bennett Jr, governor (at different times) of both VA and MD.

RICHARD SMITH's parents were Col Walter Smith and Rachel Hall, step-grandparents of Eleanor Addison.

POSTHUMOUS THORNTON's will, dated 16 Feb 1733/4, was probated 10 Oct 1738. Perhaps somewhat like a pre-nuptial agreement would be today, he evidently wrote the will when he married. He left his entire estate to his wife, unless there should be a child, when half would go to her and half to the child or children. He directed that he be buried according to the form of Church of England.22

CORBIN LEE's Parents were Philip Lee (c1681-1744) and his second wife Elizabeth Dawson [Sewall]. Philip's first wife was Sarah Brooke [Dent], daughter of Thomas Brooke, page 11a-6.

(c) Anne8 Addison, born 1711, married William Murdoch. She died 1753, age about 42. (d) John8 Addison married Susannah Wilkinson. (e) Thomas8 Addison married Rebecca Dulany. (f) Henry8 Addison married Rachel Dulany. (g) Anthony8 Addison did not marry.

BENJAMIN TASKER Sr (b c1690) and ANN BLADEN and their descendants from page 11a-5 Benjamin's parents were Thomas Tasker and Rebecca Isaack Ann's parents were William Bladen and Ann Van Swearingen iii) Benjamin7 Tasker Sr, born about 1690, married Ann Bladen 31 Jul 1711; five children. Her parents were William Bladen (c1670-1718) and Ann Van Swearingen (1677- ).14 Ann's parents were Gerret Van Swearingen and his second wife, Mary Smith. Benjamin died 19 Jun 1768 Belair, Prince George's Co MD, age about 78, buried St Anne's Cemetery, Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co MD. Ann Bladen died about 1770-1775.

BENJAMIN TASKER Sr was a naval officer 1690-1741. He became a judge and held many important positions in Maryland. He was a member of the Council of Maryland from 1722 until his death. As president of the Council, he was acting 1752-53 after his son-in-law II died. He was Mayor of Annapolis several times. In 1727 he acquired the 7000 acre "Tasker's Chance" upon which the town of Frederick MD was later laid out. In 1731 he was one of the founders of the Baltimore Ironworks. He and Ann lived in her father's former home in Annapolis and it became one of the finest residences in that city.15 We are interested in the fact that Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie MD is named for him. It isn't far from where our son-in-law's mother lives.

WILLIAM BLADEN, born about 1670, immigrated to MD in 1690 as a free adult from London.24 His parents were Nathaniel Bladen Esq of Hemsworth, Yorkshire, and Isabella Fairfax. Isabella's father was Sir William Fairfax of Steeton, Yorkshire (a cousin of Sir Thomas Fairfax). William Bladen's first wife was Letitia Loftus, whose father is said to have been vicar general of Ireland. Secondly, William married Ann Van Swearingen 1695/96. He became Secretary of Province in 1695. He was a lawyer, contractor, and merchant, and served in various legislative, provincial, and local public offices. He accumulated considerable wealth, at his death (7 Aug 1718, age about 48) owning at least 15,745 acres, and personal property valued at £2,106.14.1 (including 26 slaves, nine servants, a printing press, and books including 48 law titles). Second marriage, six children: Thomas 1698-1780 (governor of MD 1742-47, first native-born governor); Christopher; William Jr; Martin; Ann (married Benjamin Tasker, above); and Priscilla. We are interested in the fact that the town of Bladensburg, Prince George's Co MD, which was established about 1742, was named for the Bladen family. It isn't far from our former home in Landover Hills MD.

--See Section 10c for some information about the VAN SWEARINGEN family --

(b) Ann8 Tasker, born 7 Oct 1723 Prince George's Co MD, married Samuel Ogle II 5 Jul 1741 Annapolis MD; five children. They lived Belair plantation, the Ogle family estate in Prince George's Co, near present-day Bowie, and built Belair mansion 1745. He was provincial governor of Maryland three times (1731-31, 1733-42, and 1746/7-1752). He died about 1752, buried St Anne's Cemetery, Annapolis, beside their infant son Samuel Jr. She died 14 Aug 1817 Annapolis, age 93.28

He was born 13 Sep 1770. His parents were John Tayloe II and Rebecca Plater, page 11a-13. John III built "Octagon House" Washington DC as their winter home. He died 23 Mar 1828, age 57. Ann died 13 Jun 1855 Octagon House, age 82. Three children: Rebecca Plater Tayloe, Henrietta Hill Tayloe, George Plater Tayloe. We are interested in the Belair estate, now part of Bowie MD, and ,12 now owned by the American Institute of Architects, because of its history and because we have visited there.

(c) Rebecca8 Tasker, born 4 Nov 1724 Annapolis, married Daniel Dulany “the younger” 16 Sep 1750.8,32 He was born 28 Jun 1722 Annapolis. His parents were Daniel Dulany “the elder” and Rebecca Smith. Daniel the younger was Maryland Attorney General. He died 19 Mar 1797 Baltimore Co MD, age 74. Rebecca Tasker died about 1822 Brighton, Sussex, England, age about 98. Three children: Daniel Dulany III (1750-1784); Benjamin Tasker Dulany (1752-1819, aide de camp to ); and Ann (died 1828). Daniel's father, Daniel the elder, was born about 1685 Queens Co, Ireland. His second wife was Rebecca Smith (1696-1737). He died about 1753 Annapolis, age about 68. Family information is available back to William de Laune (c1539- ), a minister and apothecary.

(d) Elizabeth8 Tasker, born 4 Feb 1726 Annapolis, married Christopher Lowndes 14 May 1747; at least one child. He was born Jan 1713 Sandbach, England, the fifth son of Richard Lowndes and Margaret Poole. In Bladensburg, Christopher was a merchant, ship builder, town commissioner, first postmaster, and justice of the peace 1753-1785.27 He furnished cordage from his ropework for ships in the Revolutionary War. He built "Bostwick" (now 3901 48th Street, Bladensburg, Prince George's Co MD). He died 8 Jan 1785 Bladensburg, age about 72, buried Addison Chapel churchyard, Seat Pleasant, Pr George's Co. Elizabeth died 19 Sep 1789, age 63. An interesting story is that Benjamin Tasker Sr was not fond of his son-in-law Christopher Lowndes, did not want him to have any of the money provided for his daughter Elizabeth, and went to considerable lengths to prevent this from happening.

(i) Rebecca9 Lowndes married Benjamin Stoddert33 about 1781; eight children. He was born about 1751 Charles Co MD. They lived at Bostwick. He was a tobacco merchant, an artillery captain during the revolution, was wounded at the 1777, and was Secretary of the Continental Board of War 1779-1781. (a) Rebecca Tasker8 Addison, born 3 Jan 1703/04, married Hon James Bowles14 as his second wife. His father was Tobias Bowles, a wealthy tobacco merchant in London. James became a merchant and member of the Council of Maryland. He purchased an 890-acre farm on the Patuxent River, St Mary's Co MD about 1711 and built a house in 1717. He died about 1727. Secondly, Rebecca married Col George Plater II 10 Jun 1729. He was born about 1695. His parents were George Plater Sr and Anne Burford [Doyne], widow of Robert Doyne. After Rebecca died, George married Elizabeth [Carpenter] 25 Jun 1749. She was the widow of Capt John Carpenter. George died 17 May 1755 "Sotterley" plantation, St Mary's Co, age about 60. James Bowles and his first wife, three children: Eleanor, Mary and Jane. Rebecca Tasker Addison [Bowles] and George Plater II, five children: Rebecca 1731; Anne 1732; George III 1735; Thomas Addison 1738; and Elizabeth 1742.14

SOTTERLEY is a famous plantation on the Patuxent River, now open to the public. It is interesting to us because we visited there while the Satterlee family was still in residence; because well known quilt and needlework shows are held there annually; and because we like that KFE and George III are third cousins, seven times removed. George II and Rebecca expanded the Bowles house and named it Sotterley (for "Sotterley Hall", ancestral home of the Plater/Playter family in Suffolk). George Plater III expanded the house still further. His indentured servant Richard Boulton created the famous Chinese Chippendale stairway and the shell alcoves in the dining room. It is said that the house was a major inspiration for . Unfortunately, Sotterley began to decline afterwards, and was eventually lost in a game of dice by George Plater V in 1822. Other owners followed, and it was purchased in 1906 by the Satterlee family, who also claim Sotterley Hall in Suffolk as their ancestral home.

(i) Rebecca9 Plater, born 8 Aug 1731, married John Tayloe II 11 Jul 1748. He was born 28 May 1721. Educated in England, he became a wealthy businessman and landholder in the Virginia Colony, owning early iron mines and the Neabso and Occoquan furnaces. He was a member of the Ohio Company, built Mt Airy in Richmond Co, and was known as a breeder of fine racehorses. In 1757 he was appointed a member of the Virginia Colonial Council under Lord Governor John Dunmore, and was later elected to the first Council of Virginia under Governor Patrick Henry.29 John died 18 Apr 1779, age 57. Rebecca died 28 Aug 1787, age 56. Three children: John III, Rebecca, and Mary.14

(ii) George9 Plater III, born 8 Nov 1735, married Hannah Lee. Her father was Richard Lee.14 Secondly, George married Elizabeth Rousby. Her father was John Rousby. George was a Federalist and held various important offices, becoming the sixth governor of MD late in 1791. He died only three months later, in 1792, age about 57. Second marriage, six children, including George IV, father of George V.

-- Some information about the MAGRUDER family -- (referenced on page 11a-4)

I. Alexander Magruder was born about 1610 Perthshire. Some genealogies trace his family back to Alpin, King of Scotland in 834. Alexander was taken prisoner by Oliver Cromwell's men at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. He was exiled to the colonies, perhaps along with Ninian Beall, who became the famous commander of the Calvert Co Rangers. We include information about Alexander because of the story on page 11a-4, and because his great-great-granddaughter married a descendant of the Clack family, BFE's lineage, Section 2. A different family story is that Alexander came to America via Barbadoes. In any case, he married three times and had several chldren. At the time of his death about 1677, he owned 4000 acres, including well known tracts such as "Good Luck" in the part of Calvert Co which later became Prince George's Co. Much more is available about the Magruders, prominent socially and politically in Prince George's Co. Alexander's first wife was Margaret Braithwaite;30 three children.

A. Samuel Magruder (c1654-c1711) married Sarah Beall; twelve children. 1. John Magruder (1694-1750) married Susanna Smith; seven children. a. Zadock Magruder married Rachel Pottinger about 1754 (below); eleven children.
