Preserving our Clan Heritage

Ruins of MacFarlane stronghold on Inveruglas Isle, .

There are three “Scheduled Ancient Monuments” amongst the islands of Loch Lomond. These are protected by the Scottish Government as nationally important historic sites and are under the care of Historic . Two of the three, Inveruglas Isle and (Ellan Vhow), are home to the ruined remains of Macfarlane strongholds and have been in steady decline since the late 17 th century. There is new hope for the preservation of these sites as contemporary archaeologists document the need to protect and preserve these sites … and inspire the next generation to the same worthy end. A young archaeologist led the first thorough archaeological survey of the islands of Loch Lomond from 1995 to 1997. Fiona Baker, Director of Firat Archaeological Services, expanded our knowledge of the archaeology of these islands from 12 recorded sites to over 380 recorded sites. The initial reports spanned five volumes. Ms. Baker re-surveyed the island sites some ten years later in 2007 only to find that all but one had continued in decline … and one had been totally lost to the waters of loch. Another young (aspiring) archaeologist came to Loch Lomond in the summer of 2012 with hopes of an independent study project and a trip to ancestral castle ruins on Ellan Vhow (ca 1577-1750). Her last visit to the island castle and its “dungeon” had been fourteen years earlier when she was two years old. Katherine McFarlin reached out to several people, including Fiona Baker for suggestions. She could not have imagined what would follow. Ms. Baker suggested that Katherine repeat the 2007 Survey for Ellan Vhow and document any changes in condition of that site. Further, in spite of a very full personal and professional schedule, Fiona agreed to supervise Katherine’s work. After a few more email exchanges, the two had arranged for two full days of archaeological exploration covering five island sites and a crannog. Fiona’s kindness in mentoring Katherine led to a once-in-a-lifetime private lesson in archaeology. (Continued next page) 1

The history of these islands is rich and fascinating and is well documented in the 2007 “Summary Report of the Archaeological Field Survey and Re- appraisal of Sites and Castles” by Firat Archaeo- logical Services and the Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. The rest of the morning curriculum was focused on Inveruglas Isle and its castle which should be well known to MacFarlanes worldwide, and where David Starbuck’s work in 2000 has significantly improved the condition of the site. Glenbarr Pioneer Estate, Strathalbyn, SA . A second expedition in August, removed the tree (under Fiona’s supervision) and brought the Historic Scotland inspector, in person, to the island, yielding invaluable advice and clearing the way for future preservation works. This article is not as much about archaeological findings or even about the need for preservation. It is about people gifting their time and resources … from one generation to the next … to protect our heritage. It is about perseverance. It is about taking the long view … but also constantly pressing for action and sparking real progress. Katherine will be eternally grateful to Fiona for her mentorship. We all will be grateful to Fiona, David, Katherine, and all those who act to preserve our heritage

SA Councillor, Janet Marsh (nee MacFarlane) & President Malcolm, ready for action, await the arrival of the first visitors at historic Glenbarr.

On Saturday 20 th October Clan MacFarlane shared part of a marquee tent with other clans to help celebrate the 170th Anniversary of Strathalbyn. The event was of particular interest to many Australian MacFarlanes, who are descendants of Colin Dawson McFarlane (1775-1890), one of the first settlers in this part of South Australia in 1839. Joint Clan Luncheon MacFarlanes & MacDonalds Dine!

Well, here we are again, breaking bread with our MacDonald friends, at this our Sixth Joint event! Actually there is no precedence for this seemingly ongoing ritual. From an historical point of view, MacFarlanes are one of the few Highland clans who never at any time owed allegiance to the once powerful MacDonald Lords of the Isles. Indeed there are few incidents when both clans were united in common cause – although each supported Bruce at Bannockburn; and there was that other time around 1603 when some Glencoe MacDonalds and a few Arrochar MacFarlanes joined forces with to give the poor Colqhouns a bad time at Glenfruin! No, to be honest, the real reason for our present camaraderie here in SA is that we are all quite fond of their President Mick Murphy and his lady, ‘Wee’ Eileen , who are nice folk and always helpful! The Luncheon went well, with 91 diners, 23 of which were MacFarlanes and guests. The remainder were MacDonalds and other clans, including a few Campbells – nice to see their worthy President Jan ‘Mumsie’ Mullighan back in harness! Music was provided by pipers Hamy Marcelin () and our own Jason Moore (Left) with some quieter interludes from young harpist Siobhan Owen , pictured (Right). Our piper, Jason, led the MacFarlanes in to the tune Loch Lomond which, although not a marching tune, did reflect a sentimental tone of our Clan’s heartlands in Auld Lennox. Correct protocol has not always to be obeyed at social gatherings. The Master of ceremonies was, of course, the invincible Trevor Powell (President of SASA) who once more was caught in the act speaking loudly to a great lump of mealy-pudding and thereafter launching into a vicious attack on the beastie with his sgian dhu! The entrails of which were later handed around the tables -- Rabbie Burns has a helluva lot to answer for! Another highlight of the day was when guest speaker, Ayrshire-born Margot Mernitz spoke glowingly of her obvious love for all things Scottish. Her clear Lowland accent went over well and she ended her spiel by offering the company a few Gaelic phrases – in no time at all she had them all chanting a few cummerahas and assorted heederamhaws Aussie style, of course – and not a swear word to be heard! Ach well! It all went fine, thanks to the organisers and the friendly staff at the Enfield Hotel. Special thanks should go to the aforementioned Mick & Eileen, Don & Inga MacDonald ; our own Janet & Ron Marsh and to Anita Renfrey and others who helped out at the function. A nice touch, was when ‘Quizmaster’, Melvyn Duncan sprang a few well-aimed questions on Scotland – with prizes for the winners. Roll on next year !

The Convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor said: ‘We are delighted to be included in what will be a momentous event for Scotland. Bannockburn is a key event for us because it happened at the dawn of the system. We hope that thousands of Scots, both here and overseas, will now get behind the weekend and return to their roots to help us remember what was a pivotal period of our history. . .’ ‘. . .The battle is a key part of Scottish history and the overseas clan leaders are keen to support us.
