Will Jawando is a successful attorney and former White House aide with a strong commitment to our community. He is a husband, a father of three girls, and the son of a Nigerian immigrant and white Kansan mother who was raised in a working class family. Jawando overcame difficult life experiences, like losing a friend to gun violence, and worked hard to earn college scholarships to further his education. Jawando worked in Congress with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Sherrod Brown, and then Senator Barack Obama, and later worked for President Obama's White House and Department of Education. When Jawando was in the White House he worked to pass the Lily Ledbetter Act to help women earn equal pay for equal work. As a staffer on the Senate Education Committee Jawando was able to raise Head Start and Pell Grants to their highest levels ever and cut student loan interest rate because he wanted to ensure that all children have the same opportunity to earn a quality education that he had growing up. Jawando believes we need new leaders who have faced challenges that working families are facing and he knows how to bring people together to get things done. In 1990 his won election to the House of Delegates on his first try for public office and rose quickly to become Chair of the Montgomery County House Delegate. He is nationally known as the first Indian American to serve in a state legislature in American History and was the first non-white Majority Leader in the history of the House. Barve has been re-elected by his constituents six times. Barve is no stranger to Carroll County. As Majority Leader he crisscrossed the state repeatedly in support of legislative efforts in health care, education and the environment. Barve has participated in numerous Carroll County events and has been endorsed locally by Westminster Councilman Greg Pecoraro. Barve is known in Annapolis for tackling big issues, bringing people together and getting things done. Upon his ascension to committee chairmanship, the Baltimore Sun characterized Barve as a "staunch by practical liberal". Barve's Congressional Campaign has been endorsed by the Maryland House Speakers spanning the last quarter century: Mike Busch, Caspar Taylor and Clayton Mitchell. Speaker Busch said of him: "Kumar Barve has spent his entire career working in some of the toughest political atmospheres to do what is right for the citizens of this state". As Majority Leader, Barve was the floor leader for the Democratic Party and a senior member of the fiscal leadership in the House. He helped guide policies that resulted in balanced budgets and the maintenance of the state’s Triple-A bond rating. Barve’s groundbreaking legislative career has been highlighted by achievements in health care, technology and the environment. He was a primary architect of Maryland’s 1993 landmark reform of health insurance and was the prime sponsor of a later law that allowed patients to use physicians outside of their HMO network. As Chairman of a Technology Subcommittee, Barve’s work led to the creation of Maryland’s highly successful Technology Development Corporation, the state’s technology tuition assistance program and the early “e-commerce’ Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act which served as a guidepost for consumer protection in the then nascent world of online transactions. As Environmental Chairman, Barve’s efforts resulted in a state moratorium on fracking and a revision to the state’s stormwater management law. Barve, an accountant, also serves as the Chief Financial Officer of an environmental management company. He resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife, Maureen Quinn, who serves as a Commissioner on the Maryland Worker’s Compensation Commission.

David Trone is the co-owner of Total Wine & More. He and his brother started the business in 1991 with just one store, and grew it into the largest independent wine retailer in the country. Total Wine employs more than 5,000 people across the country, including 500 at its headquarters in Bethesda. The company also actively gives back to the community, giving to thousands of charities across the country including many in the Eighth District. David and his wife June raised their four children in Montgomery County, where they still live. He is a lifelong Democrat and a passionate supporter of the ACLU. He volunteers and raises money to support causes ranging from education to lung cancer. He has also coached youth sports in the area for over 16 years.

Joel Rubin is a progressive leader in Washington with two decades of experience getting results in the House of Representatives, and he is ready to get to work for Maryland’s 8th District on day one. Joel began his career as an Environmental Education Peace Corps Volunteer in a rural Costa Rican village, and after he returned home he went on to work as a Presidential Management Fellow and civil servant at the U.S. Agency for International Development and the US Department of Energy, a career officer at the State Department, then as an aide to Senators Harkin and Lautenberg, where he was recognized by the Military Officers Association of America for his bipartisan work strengthening military healthcare.

As the founding Political Director of J Street, Joel played a key role in helping to establish an organization that has become a leading voice for promoting Israel's security through peace with the Palestinians. In 2011, he joined Ploughshares Fund, a group dedicated to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, particularly by Iran.

Recognized for his expertise and ability to get things done in a tough political environment, Joel was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs by the Obama Administration, responsible for engaging on behalf of the State Department with Congressional leadership and members of both parties on all major national security issues, including taking the lead on securing the Iran nuclear agreement in the House.

Joel lives in the Town of Chevy Chase with his wife, their three daughters, and his mother-in-law.

Jamie Raskin is a three-term Democratic State Senator in Maryland, the Senate Majority Whip, a dynamic leader of the progressive forces in Annapolis who has been at the center of the breakthrough policy changes Maryland has experienced over the last decade. A professor of constitutional law at American University’s Washington College of Law for the last 25 years, Jamie has also taught at Yale Law School and authored several books, including Bestseller Overruling Democracy: The Supreme Court versus the American People about conservative judicial activism and the acclaimed We the Students: Supreme Court Cases for and about America’s Students. Jamie is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where he was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review three years before Barack Obama. He is deeply involved in promoting chess among children and has been active in Lumina Studio, which is one of the nation’s leading Shakespeare theaters for young people. He and his wife Sarah, who is the Deputy Secretary of the United States Treasury Department and a former Governor of the Federal Reserve Board, live in Takoma Park, Maryland with their three children, Hannah, Tommy, and Tabitha.

Dave Anderson is offering a new kind of representation for Maryland’s 8th District. As a husband, a father, a step-father, an academic, and an advocate, Dave knows that Americans are frustrated and overwhelmed by the challenges facing hard-working families. He has created practical policy solutions to address these problems and expertise to deliver meaningful results in congress. Dave is the editor of Leveraging: A Political, Economic, and Societal Framework; he also authored Youth04: Young Voters, the Internet, and Political Power and co-edited The Civic Web: Online Politics and Democratic Values. He has also written numerous articles and published over 50 op-eds for newspapers including The Baltimore Sun, The Gazette, The Hill, and Roll Call. Dave, who has taught at six universities, is Senior Vice President, State Relations at The Washington Center, where for the last 11 years he has raised money from 20 state legislatures to provide college students with scholarships. From 2012 to 2014, Dave also served on the Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth. Dave earned a B.A. in Philosophy from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan.

Kathleen brings a unique set of experiences that will make her a compelling advocate for our community and a tireless and effective fighter for Democratic values. She told our stories, shared our successes and immersed herself in our communities. For the past nine years, Kathleen was a progressive business leader at , one of Maryland’s top employers. Kathleen was a change agent who pushed Marriott to embrace progressive policies. She created the company’s Green Council, launching a sustainability strategy to reduce the company’s environmental footprint. And she stood up for women, minorities and LGBT employees, making sure they had an equal shot at opportunity and success. At Marriott Kathleen worked on important issues like rebuilding after the earthquake in Haiti and dealing with international security threats in the wake of terrorist attacks on their hotels. She served as Vice-Chair of President Obama’s Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, serving as a powerful advocate for global tourism as a strategy to create new jobs and economic growth. In addition to her professional life, Kathleen is an advocate for opportunity for women and children at home and abroad. She has been deeply involved in our community where she served on the boards of the Girl Scouts of the National Capital Area, the Black Student Fund, Catholic Charities of Washington, D.C. and Maryland, and Suited for Change, an organization that supports low-income women moving from welfare to work.
