We all feel disgust, frustration and pain about this wound in the Body The annulment of Christ, the abuse of innocent children and young people and process — one the often life-long suffering that petitioner’s story results. The present crisis in the Second in a series Church was provoked by the report of the Pennsylvania grand Page 4 jury and by the revelations about sexual misconduct and abuse by Archbishop McCarrick. We were pained about clergy sexual abuse in 2002. However, even V Encuentro though almost all the cases in National gathering yields the grand jury report were from the past, what provoked so actionable document much outrage and hurt from the recent report was the sheer num- Page 8-9 ber of cases (300 abusers and over 1,000 victims in six dio- ceses), the graphic and horrific details of the abuse described World Youth Day by the report, the often-callous treatment of victims by Church Diocesan pilgrims leaders and the negligence of bishops in not protecting chil- prepare their hearts dren and young people from predators. Further, the thus-far Page 10 inexplicable case of Archbishop McCarrick’s conduct and how it was not dealt with by Church authorities have also provoked outrage. During this time of trial, I invite all of us together to reflect on these words of St. Paul to the Romans: “Let love be sin- cere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good.” Love is our highest obligation and the great- est virtue. Christian living is faith working through love. The priesthood is an office of love. The abuse of a minor is a grave violation of that love, not only causing terrible emotional, psy- chological and physical harm, but also damaging the soul. It is evil. We must hate it and eradicate it from our Church and society. “Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good.” There is so much good that our Church does, good that is often over- shadowed by the evil of sexual abuse. Important acts of reparation include: the penances given at the end of reconciliation (CCC 1459) and the offering of the Eucharist for the sins of the living and the dead (CCC 1414). Reparation should be made to the victim of injustice by the offender and, especially if this is lacking, by those who love the victim as a brother or sister in Christ. In his pastoral letter, Bishop Rhoades has described how we might begin to make amends for the hei- nous sins of clerical offenders and promote the healing of victims.
