Why Capricci in the Urtext edition G. Henle Verlag? You must have wondered why the Capricci must be played in the G. Henle Verlag Urtext edition in the musical programme of the Competition. Prof. Damilo Prefumo, member of the Paganini Competition Artistic Committee explain why:

Paganini's Caprices and their modern editions After the first edition by Ricordi, dating back to 1820, Paganini's Capricci have been reprinted many times, both in Italy and abroad. Each new nineteenth-century edition added, one can say, a few clerical errors to the previous ones, to the point that, in the second half of the twentieth century, many felt the need for a critical edition based on the original manuscript by Paganini, which would correct the many mistakes that had accumulated over time. Currently, the only edition faithful to the original manuscript of the Capricci is the Urtext edition published by G. Henle Verlag. All the other available editions on the market differ from the Urtext and contain a certain number of errors: these are relatively few in the editions by Abbado (Suvini Zerboni) and Accardo (Ricordi), and much more in those of Flesh (Peters), Galamian (International Music Company), Ricci (Editio Musica Budapest) and Hertel (Peters). The latter is presented as an Urtext, but cannot be considered so because it contains numerous errors of transcription that have not even been noticed by the reviser. For this reason it is advisable that violinists who take part in the Paganini Competition perform the Capricci following the Urtext edition G. Henle Verlag, at least in so far as the actual notes are concerned. As for fingering and technical approach, they can instead freely use any of the editions on sale, according to their taste and ability (the version edited by Carl Flesh, in particular, is generally considered one of the best for what concerns the technical and performing approaches, even though unfortunately it contains many errors); always, however, respecting the original manuscript by Paganini.
