I usually suggest that as the student answers each cue card, they make a pile of cards they have correct and a pile that they answered incorrectly. The student then goes back to the pile that they did not get correct and keep going through them until they are all on the pile that are correct. Rewriting notes, using techniques such as Look, Cover, Write, Check and answering lots of questions are all very useful in study. It is also really good to pray for clarity of thought, perseverance, endurance and understanding for our children and students during this time. A number of students do find exams and preparation for them difficult and although they are developing perseverance it is still very hard. There are a number of subjects at Year 11 and 12 that have no examinations. For the middle school years, the student who finds the exams really difficult will need to continue to Thursday, December 5 endure and persevere. By the end of Year 10 the pathway for 6.30am—7.30am their Year 11 and 12 will be much clearer and could have very few or even no examinations. The students at the end of their examinations will be well deserving of a good long holiday break. Year 7, 2020 We have continued to have great interest in Year 7 for 2020 and have over 40 students as such we will continue having 2 teachers allocated to the classes with 3 teachers allocated to Mathematics and English. We will be flexible in how the group would be divided for each of the subjects and look forward to some really innovative teaching and learning. It is exciting to see how Year 7 is developing at Temple and in 2022 all Year 7 will occur in Secondary Schools. Presentation Night. Volleyball SA, Beach Volleyball On Monday, 11 and 13 November, Week 5 of Term 4, Temple Christian College students had the opportunity to compete in a Beach Volleyball Carnival, held at Glenelg Beach.

The Year 8/9 teams competed on Monday and then on Wednesday it was the Opens teams turn to compete. Our Opens teams consisted mostly of Year 11 students as many of our Year 12 students are busy studying for their upcoming final exams. The students who competed are to be commended for their attitude as they were encouraging, enthusiastic and also provided good competition for the days play. Despite the extremely windy weather conditions on both days, the students enjoyed the opportunity to compete against other students from schools around Adelaide.

One of the Temple Open boy’s teams made it to the grand final against Concordia. It was a close and competitive game and at half time the scores were even. Unfortunately, these Temple boys went down by one point in bonus points. Congratulations to the Open Boys Team 2 for placing 2nd.

Well done to all of the students who attended the carnivals to compete and help referee.

Year 8 PE Hockey Excursion State Hockey Centre, formerly ‘The Pines’

On Thursday, November 7, Week 4, Term 4 the Year 8 PE students had the opportunity to go on a cohort excursion to play hockey. The Year 8 students have been completing a Hockey unit in PE. So, to gain a good understanding of the game and further exposure of hockey in , they attended a session at the State Hockey Centre. The students had the privilege of being coached by representatives from the state team, Adelaide Fire, as well as local premier league players.

Well done to the Year 8 students who participated and showed enthusiasm and good sportsmanship in this session.

Stephanie Sutherland, P.E./Sports Coordinator Year 8 English Cross Cultural Borders

Some Year 8 classes have been studying Chinese Cinderella in English this term and as Chinese dumplings are featured in the text, it was time to learn how to make and eat them. We employed the expert skills of Mrs Sum Lock who taught us how to mix the fillings and demonstrated the delicate art of pinching and folding the dumpling wrappers into the desired shapes. Many dumplings were created and consumed at our Chinese Feast. It made a nice change from many lessons of reading and writing.

Plant Club – Bee Hotels

During Term 3 members of the Plant Club made Native Bee Hotels. This involved using bamboo from a local park which was cut into pieces using secateurs. The hotels were then constructed using a steel can and string. Various students were able to take one home and were tasked with finding a good spot for it to hang, where it was hidden and safe.

“Making bee hotels was lots of fun it was great learning about the native bees and how they lay their eggs. It was a really simple process: you first find a can to put your bamboo in, cut the bamboo to the length of the can and finally make holes in the can and put some string through. Did you know that native bees lay some of their eggs in front of the bamboo nodes (walls)?“ Wesley Sawtell Year 7.

Mrs Terri van Wezel and Ms Amanda Benger. The Year 9 Summit to Sea Hike that day. It was a wonderful way to finish the challenge component of The Rite Journey. Well done, Year 9s. With cold faces and numb fingers, 32 brave Year 9s gathered at Alison Cocks, Year 9 Coordinator Mount Lofty Summit for their 32 kilometre hike. The sun was low on the horizon and the wild winds from the previous night lingered as they began their descent down Mount Lofty. For some, the decision to tackle this long walk was an act of courage. This would be the longest distance they would walk in a day. For others, confidence clearly oozed, as they eagerly anticipated conquering another of many outdoor treks. For these students, this was an opportunity to display leadership and assist with navigation.

This was the final Rite Journey class challenge for the Year 9s which built upon their outdoor hiking experience from camp in Term 3. Students needed mental resolve and perseverance to complete the walk. Students also needed to be considerate of the range of experiences and physical abilities within the group and encourage those who were feeling particularly exhausted.

The weather conveniently cleared during the day for the 15km hikers who started their walk from Coromandel Railway Station at 10am. The sun was shining and, despite a few brief sun showers early in the walk, provided beautiful weather for the walkers.

The Year 9s trekked through a mix of terrains from luscious greenery along Sturt Creek to arid bushland over O’Halloran Hill. Students enjoyed the excitement of the creek crossings through Sturt Gorge. The earlier rain had turned some of the crossings into collaborative exercises. Squeals and laughter could be heard as students worked together, sometimes effectively, to help their peers cross. A few wet socks and muddied shorts later, they were on their way again.

Students arrived at Seacliff beach at 4:30pm, many feeling sore but satisfied. The winds had decided to roar again and so few students chose to brace the water for a swim. It seemed more appropriate to leave the waves for the kite surfers.

The Year 9s enjoyed a BBQ dinner in celebration of their achievement German Exchange Congratulations To Mrs Cassie Thomas (German Coordinator) on the birth of Our two year 11 German Mylee Jane Thomas. Tobi will be staying in a town called Gröbenzell, just outside of Munich and Rosanna will be in Immenstadt in the south of Bavaria. Both will be attending school during their time there and will spend a week on tour in Berlin. This is an amazing opportunity for our students to experience daily life with a German family, enjoy a

German Christmas, practice and improve their German and make wonderful friendships and memories to last a lifetime. We wish them a gute Reise (safe journey) and will keep them in our prayers. Mum and baby are doing well. Year 9 German Excursion

Our Year 9 German students enjoyed an excursion to the Adelaide Central Markets last week. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to see and sample delicious German produce including different types of German sausage, cheese, bread and sweets.

Year 7 Excursion to Urrbrae Wetland

Year 7 students visited Urrbrae Wetland last week as a part of their Science and HASS studies. The students really enjoyed being amongst nature for the day, as well as the opportunity to participate in water testing activities and macroinvertebrate identification. We are very fortunate to have such a unique wetlands nearby, where our students are able to enjoy hands-on learning activities and develop their inquiry-based learning skills. The Year 9 Rite Journey Homecoming Ceremony The Homecoming Ceremony was a wonderful evening celebrating the personal growth and achievements of our 2019 Year 9 Rite Journey students. It was an opportunity for each student to celebrate with their Rite Journey teacher, peers, and parents, as well as the mentor they have connected with over the year through The Rite Journey Mentor Program.

I was proud of our students’ courage in sharing about their year in front of parents and mentors at The Homecoming Ceremony. It was evident from the speeches that the mentoring aspect of The Rite Journey was a real highlight for many. It was wonderful see the close relationships formed between students and their mentors and to observe the interests and skills shared and learnt through their time spent together on their mentor projects. Many guests marvelled at the talent and creativity evident in these projects as they walked through the Mentor Project Exhibit.

The evening was also a celebration of the contributions each student has made over the year in class in sharing their thoughts, ideas, hopes, fears, joys and sorrows with their peers and Rite Journey teacher. Students were also recognised for their commitment in a range of challenges such as the stave challenge, the outdoor hikes, the juggling challenge and camp. It was a proud moment for The Rite Journey teachers as they presented awards to those who completed all of The Rite Journey challenges in the areas of courage, consideration, compassion, collaboration and commitment. These students received The Rite Journey Challenge badge.

Although The Homecoming Ceremony marks the completion of The Rite Journey for all of our Year 9s, their journey into adulthood is by no means over. In fact, it is really just the beginning. I encourage our Year 9s to continue to invest in their mentor relationships and to embrace opportunities to grow in character. Our young people have great capacity and ability to influence those around them. It is my prayer that they know God to be the trustworthy and kind Father He is, and know that He will walk with them on their journey and give them the courage to face all things.

Coastal Geography Excursion At the Year 10 coastal Geography excursion held in Week 4, we had a great time out examining Adelaide’s coastline, starting at Marino and concluding at Brighton. It was a fun day studying coastal formations, analysing coastal issues and observing coastal management strategies learnt about in class. This excursion allowed me to widen my knowledge of coastal geographic formations. I learnt about many areas of this topic, some of which includes longshore drift, sand replenishment, corrosion (attrition and abrasion), methods of coastal management such as groynes and issues effecting Adelaide’s beaches, such as the northward drift of sand. I mainly enjoyed spending a day away from a desk and laptop to interact with nature accompanied with fellow classmates and teachers. Exercising my physical body while developing a different part of my brain by interacting with the external environment. I was surprised by the outcome of learning in a different environment as it has allowed me to recall information taught and use it in class more efficiently. Victoria Chang

On Thursday, 31October, our year level went to Marino Rocks, SA. From Marino we walked along the coastline, all the way to Brighton jetty. Whilst we were walking we made many stops, in order to fill in a booklet in order to learn about the coastline. We learnt about wave cut platforms, coastal erosion and many different kinds of coastal management techniques. I was honestly quite surprised, by the number of coastal management techniques employed along the local beaches, which were put in place due to coastal erosion. I was also surprised by how close the houses are to the edges of the naturally retreating cliffs. I personally enjoyed being able to get out of the classroom and enjoy the nice day on the beach.
