  • Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation
Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation Min-hwan Oh, Suraj Keshri, Garud Iyengar Columbia University New York, NY, USA, 10027 [email protected], [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In this paper, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch and event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node is a network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-14 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. 1 Introduction Predicting the outcomes of professional sports events is one of the most popular practices in the sports media, fan communities and, of course, sport betting related industries. Predictions range from human prediction to statistical analysis of historical data. In recent years, basketball, specifically the NBA, has received much atten- tion as a domain of analytics with the advent of player tracking data.

  • Numbers Game -- the Washington Times the Washington Times
Numbers game -- The Washington Times The Washington Times www.washingtontimes.com Numbers game By Patrick Hruby THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published April 13, 2004 Everyone else has it wrong. The fans. The press. Even the league. They're blinded by box scores. Hamstrung by hype. Of this and more, Wayne Winston is certain. A single mouse click tells him so. "Nobody should be talking about LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony," he says. "They should be talking about Dwyane Wade. It's a crime." For Winston, Wade's superiority is not a matter of opinion. It's a fact, cold and hard, like an icicle. You can argue politics, and you can argue the best "Godfather" flick (well, excluding part III). But when it comes to the NBA Rookie of the Year race, you can't argue the data. At least not with Winston, a former "Jeopardy" champ who's good with math the way Eric Clapton is good with chords. "James rates as an average NBA player," says Winston, a professor of decision sciences at Indiana University. "That's good since very few rookies rate that high. But Wade's a real impact player for Miami. He ranks 21st best in the league in terms of changing the chances of your team winning a game." Like any MIT graduate worth his sodium chloride, Winston has the numbers to prove his point. More than 5,000 pages' worth, to be exact. Only you won't find his statistics in a newspaper. Together with fellow sports math guru Jeff Sagarin -- the brain behind USA Today's computer rankings -- Winston has created Winval, a sophisticated program that rates and ranks the value of every NBA player from Tariq Abdul-Wahad to Lorenzen Wright.

  • Todd Franklin-Vincennes Release
SIC HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH TODD FRANKLIN ACCEPTS TOP JOB AT VINCENNES After leading the 2009-10 Falcons to their fourth NJCAA national tournament appearance in the past eight seasons, Southeastern Illinois College men’s basketball coach Todd Franklin has accepted the head coaching position at Vincennes University. Franklin submitted his letter of resignation this week, effective August 22. “This is really the only junior college job I would make this move for,” Franklin said. “Basically, it’s the Kentucky or North Carolina of JUCO basketball: third all-time in wins, right there at the top in terms of facilities, tradition, resources…and it’s close to home, still in the same recruiting base that I’ve known here at Southeastern.” The Vincennes men’s basketball program won national championships in 1965, 1970, and 1972, with dozens of NJCAA all-Americans in their record books. Current NBA players Carl Landry and Shawn Marion attended Vincennes, as well as NBA Hall-of Famer Bob McAdoo. Franklin built an impressive resume, leading Southeastern Illinois College into the national spotlight as regular contenders for the national title. Franklin’s first NJCAA national tournament appearance was in the 2002-2003 season, and repeat trips followed in 2003-2004, 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. Franklin achieved his 300 th win in January 2009 in a game against John A. Logan College in Carterville. His record at the end of 13 years with Southeastern stands at 329-97. His coaching awards include: six Great Rivers Athletic Conference awards, six Region 24 awards, five district awards and five state junior college awards.

NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich (l) with Tony Parker (c) and Manu Ginobili (r).
