Senator Ragan of the 11Th a RESOLUTION Recognizing And 01 LC 8 4399 Senate Resolution 74 By: Senator Ragan of the 11th A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and commending Bill Stanfill; and for other purposes. 2 WHEREAS, Bill Stanfill is a great American athlete whose contributions to the National 3 Football League, the University of Georgia Bulldogs, and Cairo High School brought fame 4 and honor to his family, teammates, and the proud community of this native Georgian; and 5 WHEREAS, he was inducted into the Georgia Circle of Honor, the highest tribute the 6 University of Georgia pays to a former athlete or coach, on September 1, 2000; and 7 WHEREAS, he was the 1968 Outland Trophy winner for the nation's outstanding college 8 lineman and, during his three varsity years at Georgia (1966-1968), he played on two SEC 9 championship teams and in three bowl games and earned academic distinction as well; and 10 WHEREAS, he was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1998 in 11 recognition of his extraordinary performance and tremendous record on the field; and 12 WHEREAS, this legendary football lineman was a three-sport star who excelled in football, 13 basketball, and track at Cairo High School where he made history and inspired others; and 14 WHEREAS, during his career with the Miami Dolphins, he was named All-Pro four times 15 and was a starter on the 1972 (the only undefeated team in NFL history) and 1973 Super 16 Bowl championship teams, and his superb ability as an athlete has been surpassed only by 17 his respect for fellow teammates and for his fellow citizens in Albany, Georgia, where he is 18 a prominent businessman and civic leader. 19 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes Bill 20 Stanfill as a member of the Georgia Circle of Honor and salutes him as a great Georgian. PHILADELPHIA 1949 The Eagles breezed to their third straight Eastern Division crown losing only once in twelve games, a 38-21 setback at the Bears October 16. Philly finished 4 1/2 games ahead of second place Pittsburgh. The Eagles' success still rested on the twin pillars of their outstanding 5-2-4 "Eagle Defense" and a ball-control offense built around All-Pro RB Steve Van Buren, who led the league in rushing attempts, yards, and rushing TDs. The other speedy HB, Bosh Pritchard, provided a wide threat. The pilot of the highest-scoring offense in the league, Tommy Thompson, has been somewhat overlooked for his contributions to the Eagles' success. The slick ballhandler was adept at faking a handout, hiding the ball on his hip, and flinging a pass downfield. 2. GREEN BAY 1966 This team won Super Bowl I. The Packers went 12-2 during the regular season beating the Dallas Cowboys in the “Ice Bow” on quarterback Bart Starr’s one-yard sneak for the game winning touchdown. Two weeks later, the Packers soundly beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I. This was Starr’s only MVP season. This was the second of Green Bay’s three consecutive NFL championship teams. Hall of Famers at every level on this team. Many of them All-Time Greats. 3. MIAMI 1972 The only team to have a perfect regular season record and win the Super Bowl. Then he’ll get a spate of disagreeable letters continuing the assault on the obvious noting that the Heisman is not awarded to the “best pro prospect.” Or that some great college backs are just too small to make good pros (Doak Walker, take note). Or that a great college back may be great because of his versatility whereas the pros want specialists (Doak Walker, take note again). Or that injuries were a factor in a star’s failure to shine. In reality, of course, linemen are the most important men on the field (not counting the back judge when your team is making a late drive to tie). Teams can win without great runners, receivers, or even great quarterbacks, but you can count the teams with sub-par lines AND winning records on Captain Hook’s bad hand.
