  • History of Royal Cromer Golf Club Established 1888
History of Royal Cromer Golf Club established 1888 Information obtained from minute books, letters, members records, journals and periodicals. Royal Cromer Golf Club History Established 1888 Royal Cromer Golf Club owes its existence to the enthusiasm and love of the game of a Mr. Henry Broadhurst M.P., a Scot who lived at 19, Buckingham Street, The Strand, London. In the 1880's, whilst holidaying in Cromer, he recognised the potential of land to the seaward of the Lighthouse as a possible site for a Links Course. The popularity of North Norfolk at this time had been noted in the London City Press in a report dated 5th September 1886: "The public are greatly indebted to railway enterprise for the opening up of the East Coast. More bracing air and delightful sands are not to be found in any part of England. The only drawback is that the country is rather flat. This remark, however, does not apply to Cromer, which bids fair to become the most popular watering place, it being entirely free from objectionable features". The site of the proposed golf course was owned by the then Lord Suffield KCB, who kindly consented to the request of Broadhurst and some twenty other enthusiasts to rent the land. The Club was instituted in the Autumn of 1887 with Lord Suffield as President. Doubtless it was his friendship and influence with the Prince of Wales which precipitated the Prince's gracious patronage of the infant club on 25th December 1887. Thus Cromer had a Royal Golf Club even before its official opening the following January.

  • Rothley Park Official Opening
Rothley Park Official Opening May 1912 The official opening took place on May 1912. In an article in the Dundee Evening Telegraph on the 21st of May 1912, James Sorley wrote: “Rothley Park Golf Club is a new one, and the course has not yet been properly opened. At present we are playing over 12 holes , but we will have at our disposal in a few days 16 holes. When completed the Rothley Course will be 6000 yards, the longest hole measures about 500 yards”. The fact that the golf course consisted of only 12 holes at the time of the official opening probably explains why there was no record of an exhibition match being played at that time. It is interesting to note that in the above photograph, Braid and Vardon are both wearing golf shoes. It would be reasonable to assume that they perhaps had a drive in of some sort, with an exhibition match arranged when the 18 holes were completed. The Great Triumvirate In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a trio of players dominated professional golf to such an extent that they earned a collective nickname. “The Great Triumvirate” of Harry Vardon, J.H. Taylor and James Braid won 16 of the 21 Open Championships held between 1894 and 1914. The members of the Great Triumvirate made a very good living out of Golf Club openings and exhibition matches. The usual fee was £8 plus expenses, at a time when winning the Open Championship was worth £50. In the month of May 1913, Vardon played no less than five exhibition matches at golf clubs all around the country.

  • Playing Hickory Golf While You Piece Together a Vintage Set
CHAPTER 10 cmyk 4/11/08 5:13 PM Page 165 Chapter Title CHAPTER 10 Questions And Answers About Hickory Golf Q: How much does it cost to get started in hickory golf? A: You can purchase inexpensive hickory clubs for as little as $25 each. Obviously, these are not likely to be of a premium quality and will probably require work to make them playable. At Classic Golf, we offer fully restored Tom Stewart irons for about $150 each with a one-year warranty on the shafts against breakage. Our restored woods are about $250 each for the premium examples. So, a ten-club set with two woods would run $1,700. A 14-club set would be $2,300. This compares favorably with the purchase of a premium modern 14-club set where your irons are $800, your driver is $400, fairway wood $200, two wedges at $125 each, hybrid at $150, and a putter at $200 for a total of $2,000. Q: Can a beginner or high handicap golfer play hickory golf? A: Yes. That is how it was done 100 years ago! It can be an advantage starting golf with clubs that require a more precise swing. Q: Are there reproduction clubs available and are they allowed in hickory tournaments? A: Reproduction clubs are available from Tad Moore, Barry Kerr, and Louisville Golf. Every tournament has its own set of rules. The National Hickory Championship allows reproductions because pre-1900 clubs are so difficult to find and are very expensive. At the present time there are ample supplies of vintage clubs available for play, but this could change with the increasing popularity of hickory golf.
