Most studies of the political history of early America begin with the end of the French and Indian War. In this well-known telling of Anglo-American history, the debts accrued by England in fighting to secure their Atlantic holdings left the home government in dire need of new sources of revenue, which led it to implement a series of new taxes on the colonies. These imperial acts redefined the relationship between colony and metropole, one that, from the perspective of the colonists, newly encroached upon the political power and autonomy of colonial leaders. The change in imperial policy was vital to the emergence of a uniquely American political thought because it forced colonists to justify their claims to political authority and to explain their role and place within the empire. Political thought in America, or at least its formal articulation in print, has thereby been understood as being largely reactive, pushed into existence by imperial actions. Given the concentrated nature of this brief gestational period of American political thought, historians have examined these years in microscopic detail and have identified the key issue as one of ideological origins, giving rise to two distinct versions of the politics of the Revolution, one liberal and the other republican. In the "republican thesis," the classical politics of virtue dominated American political thought, which explained the fears, goals, and governing solutions of 1 the rebelling colonists.1 The republican interpretation of the Revolution has been highly influential, peaking in prominence in the 1970s and 80s, but never fully succeeded in supplanting the older "liberal thesis." Historians have continued to find evidence that liberal ideas of rights, property, and consent were central to Revolutionary ideology.2 The importance of this debate in understanding early American political thought, however, is connected to and largely dependent upon the particular periodization that posits its creation in the late eighteenth century.3 A new, revisionist approach to the study of early American politics has emerged that is intent on expanding its chronological parameters. For a recent account of the debate and where it stands, see Alan Gibson, Understanding the Founding: The Crucial Questions (Lawrence: University of Kansas, 2007). 2 efforts has been Craig Yirush and his recent work on the roots of American political theory.4 A key piece of evidence for Yirush and the revisionist position is the set of instructions given by the Massachusetts General Court in 1762 to its London agent, Jasper Maudit, one year before the French and Indian War had reached its conclusion. The instructions were complex and offered numerous justifications of colonial rights. Clearly influenced by Locke's Second Treatise, the instructions referenced the "natural rights" of all British subjects as well as "of all humankind" and laid claim to the liberty "of all men" to live free from any arbitrary power. Beyond a claim to "natural rights," they also pointed to their allegiance to the sovereign, which they argued did not dissipate over long distances, so neither should the various privileges that accompanied their birthright as Englishmen. And finally, the instructions put forth an additional argument, appealing to the economic "interest" of the Nation, which they argued would be best served by the continuing grant of certain liberties to the English colonists.5 For Yirush, the colonial position in 1762, as reflected in these instructions, was too sophisticated for this to have been its first iteration. Margaret Hickey thinks it may have been brought there by a member of an earlier generation of the Sandys family, of which she is the last of the name, being an only child to John Edwin and Mai Sandys. Margaret was married to the late Johnny Hickey. The Sandys family have been in Roscommon since the mid 17th century, at least, as a headstone in Roscommon's old St Coman's churchyard testifies. They have been in Derrane for many generations, and the family name is also found at Sandfield, near Knockcroghery, where Nehemiah Sandys lived in the mid 18th century. A story tells of the stone being in the Durham House property, not far from Durham Lodge, until the property was sold in the 1820s when Basil, his brother, William Sandys and some of their men carried it to Durham Lodge. In the late 1600s Robert Sandys married Mary Reynolds daughter of James Reynolds of Loughscur. There was a brother John who died shortly before the birth of his son. Within two years this son also died and Mary became sole heiress to her father's estate, which she passed to her second son Edwin. He added the name Reynolds, becoming Edwin Sandys Reynolds and lived at Durham House and Loughscur. Some sixty years later, in 1738, a member of another branch of the Reynolds Family contested the rights of the Sandys family to the Reynolds inheritance, as he claimed the property was only to descend in the male line.

The passengers on board envisioned their goals – wealth and discovery, glory and destiny. The promise of a new life hung tantalizingly ahead of them. When they arrived in their new world in May of the next year, they did not know that they were to begin the journey of a nation that would eventually become the United States of America. This summary sounds almost ridiculously idealistic – dream-driven achievers setting out to start over and build for themselves a better world. To the average American citizen, this story appears to be the classic description of the Pilgrims coming to the new world in 1620 seeking religious freedom. But what would the same average American citizen say to the fact that this deceptively idealistic story actually took place almost fourteen years earlier at Jamestown, Virginia? The unfortunate truth is that most people do not know the story of the Jamestown colony, established in 1607.1 Even when people have heard of Jamestown, often it is with a negative connotation. Common knowledge marginally recognizes Jamestown as the colony that predates the Separatists in New England by more than a dozen years, and as the first permanent English settlement in America.

It examines the reluctance of the English to rethink their ideas on sovereignty, and the problems inherent in an ‘imperfect union’. When King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England in March 1603, it meant profound institutional and political changes in the distribu- tion of power in Scotland. Yet paradoxically, because of Scottish views on the nature of power and of the state, it meant a comparatively small intel- lectual adjustment of those views. By contrast, in England, the accession of a Scottish king made little difference to the course of English political life, but it offered a far-reaching challenge to English views about the nature of sovereignty and of the state. Seen from south of the border, the troubles caused by the union were those resulting from the failure of the English to rethink their ideas on sovereignty. This failure prevented them from thinking constructively about the new relationship into which they had entered through the union of the crowns. Indeed, it often prevented them from admitting that they had entered into any relationship at all. In the terminology of the day, the union of the crowns in 1603 was an ‘imperfect union’, between two sovereign states under a common authority.

    FINDLEY JR, JAMES WALTER, Ph.D. “Went to Build Castles in the Aire:” Colonial Failure in the Anglo-North Atlantic World, 1570-1640 (2015). Directed by Dr. Phyllis Whitman Hunter. 266pp. This study examines the early phases of Anglo-North American colonization from 1570 to 1640 by employing the lenses of imagination and failure. I argue that English colonial projectors envisioned a North America that existed primarily in their minds – a place filled with marketable and profitable commodities waiting to be extracted. I historicize the imagined profitability of commodities like fish and sassafras, and use the extreme example of the unicorn to highlight and contextualize the unlimited potential that America held in the minds of early-modern projectors. My research on colonial failure encompasses the failure of not just physical colonies, but also the failure to pursue profitable commodities, and the failure to develop successful theories of colonization. After roughly seventy years of experience in America, Anglo projectors reevaluated their modus operandi by studying and drawing lessons from past colonial failure. Projectors learned slowly and marginally, and in some cases, did not seem to learn anything at all. However, the lack of learning the right lessons did not diminish the importance of this early phase of colonization. By exploring the variety, impracticability, and failure of plans for early settlement, this study investigates the persistent search for usefulness of America by Anglo colonial projectors in the face of high rate of

Shadle 16 March 2010 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Early Modern England; Colonial Virginia; Jamestown; Devil; Fear Copyright 2010, Matthew John Sparacio The Devil in Virginia: Fear in Colonial Jamestown, 1607-1622 Matthew John Sparacio ABSTRACT This study examines the role of emotions – specifically fear – in the development and early stages of settlement at Jamestown. More so than any other factor, the Protestant belief system transplanted by the first settlers to Virginia helps explain the hardships the English encountered in the New World, as well as influencing English perceptions of self and other. Out of this transplanted Protestantism emerged a discourse of fear that revolved around the agency of the Devil in the temporal world. Reformed beliefs of the Devil identified domestic English Catholics and English imperial rivals from Iberia as agents of the diabolical. These fears travelled to Virginia, where the English quickly ʻsatanizedʼ another group, the Virginia Algonquians, based upon misperceptions of native religious and cultural practices. I argue that English belief in the diabolic nature of the Native Americans played a significant role during the “starving time” winter of 1609-1610. In addition to the acknowledged agency of the Devil, Reformed belief recognized the existence of providential actions based upon continued adherence to the Englishʼs nationally perceived covenant with the Almighty.
