 CARICOM was established after CARIFTA came to an end in 1973.  The Community/CARICOM was established on July 4, 1973 with the signing the Treaty of Chaguaramas.

 The Treaty was signed by the Heads of Government of:  (Mr. Errol Barrow),  Guyana (L.F.S. Burnham),  (Mr. Michael Manley)  (Dr. Eric Williams).

 These four countries are founder members of CARICOM.  The CARICOM movement came into effect on August1, 1973.  Subsequently, eight other territories joined CARICOM. became the 13th member state on July 4, 1983 and Suriname, the 14th member joined in 1995.  In July 1997, was welcomed in the community.  On the 5th of July 2001, a revised Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed.  At that time of signing of the treaty; Caribbean Common Market was transformed into the Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME).

The main objectives of the CSME are to:  Remove all restrictions to the inter-regional movement of goods (taxes, rules, quotas, bans).  Promote free trading of goods.  Promote free movement of services.  Promote free movement of capital.  Promote competitive production leading to greater variety and quantity of products and services to trade.  Develop a common trade policy when trading with international countries.  Remove restrictions to the inter-regional movement of people.  Promote free movement of labour: CARICOM nationals can work in any CARICOM country without a permit.  Promote the right of establishment: CARICOM nationals can open businesses in any CARICOM country.
