THE HARRIS POLL® #62, Embargo Until December 19, 2001

JULIA ROBERTS MOST POPULAR MOVIE STAR

First time in series (since 1993) that a woman has topped the list and in second and third place ______

by Humphrey Taylor

Every year at this time since 1993 we ask a cross section of adults to tell us who is their favorite movie star. This year, for the first time, a female star, tops the list. She is followed by Tom Hanks, who moves up from number six last year, and Harrison Ford, who was the nation's favorite star in each of the last three years (1998, 1999, and 2000).

Last year Julia Roberts was in fourth place, and the year before that she was number eight.

The other stars in this year's top ten are (down from number three last year to number four), (up from number ten to number five), John Wayne (down from number two for the previous three years to number six), (down from number five to number seven), (down from number seven to number eight), with Robin Williams and Sandra Bullock in positions nine and ten, respectively.

The biggest changes since last year were:

· Sean Connery up five places to number five.

· John Wayne down four places to number six.

· Tom Hanks up four places to number two.

Bruce Willis (equal number seven last year), (number nine) and Robert DeNiro (equal number ten) all drop out of the top ten, as Robin Williams and Sandra Bullock move in.

When different segments of the population are analyzed separately, Julia Roberts is in first place with women and Hispanics, and she shares first place with Harrison Ford in the key movie-going crowd aged 18– 29. Tom Hanks is number one among men and whites; and Denzel Washington is the favorite among African-Americans.

These are the results for this issue of The Harris PollÒ of 1,065 adults surveyed online nationwide between November 9-14, 2001, using the same methods used by Harris Interactive to accurately forecast the 2000 elections last year.

Humphrey Taylor is the chairman of The Harris Poll®, Harris Interactive.

2 Methodology

This issue of The Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between November 9-14, 2001, among a nationwide cross section of 1,065 adults. Figures for age, sex, race, education, number of adults and number of voice/telephone lines in the household were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. "Propensity score" weighting was also used to adjust for respondents propensity to be online.

In theory, with a probability sample of this size, one can say with 95 percent certainty that the results have a statistical precision of plus or minus 3 percentage points of what they would be if the entire adult population had been polled with complete accuracy. Unfortunately, there are several other possible sources of error in all polls or surveys that are probably more serious than theoretical calculations of sampling error. They include refusals to be interviewed (non-response), question wording and question order, interviewer bias, weighting by demographic control data and screening (e.g., for likely voters). It is difficult or impossible to quantify the errors that may result from these factors. And this online sample is not a probability sample.

These statements conform to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls. ______
