The event is put on by Associated Students and Gente Unida. Each day the event runs from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the A.S. lawn. On Wednesday there was a wall made of boxes from a local taqueria where 2 3 students came and wrote down negative stereotypes that they have heard about themselves. At the end of the event the wall was torn down when students ran into the wall with force. Throughout the event, handfuls of students stopped by to write on the wall. Members of Gente Unida stood on the sidewalk with markers in hand to ask students if they wanted to contribute to the wall. The Calendar is edited by Steven Goings with new editions being released every Monday. 1) To submit an event to the BFC for possible publication, click on this link: BFC Event Submission Form 2) To submit a "My Take" article, send a word document (NOT pdf!) along with your name and email address to [email protected] 3) To submit a "In the Spotlight" biography and picture of a community leader, send to a word document and digital picture to [email protected] Editor's Note: Throughout this newsletter, Blue Underlined copy (including above!) indicates a searchable link. Steven's Take on: The Importance of Black Intersectionality As some readers will know, I have been active over the years with the Monterey County Branch NAACP, the local LGBTQ+ Community, Communities of Faith and the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI). NCBI's motto (borrowed from the 3 Musketeers!) is All for One and One for All. Of our many NCBI principles, my favorite is Principle One: Everyone, Every Group, and Every Issue Counts. NCBI starts from the premise that every group and every one of our identities matters.

The Dream Man TThhee DDrreeaamm MMaann Rori Gwynne 2 The Dream Man 1 She’d fight for him. No more cool, no more walking away. She’d trust him. Claim him. Love him. If it couldn’t be forever, it’d be for now. If it couldn’t be always…she wouldn’t believe it. She’d go to him. She’d make it work. Grace stared into the sink at last night‘s dirty dishes hoping one would be easy to clean. Yuck. She fished out a small glass bowl, turned on the hot water and squirted soap over everything, watching, delighted, as a hundred tiny bubbles flew out from the top of the bottle. A million colors at once floated up in front of her face, a million mirrors reflecting her face, her soft blonde hair and brown eyes, hanging in transparencies so delicate they would break from a touch. She waved her hand through them slowly, smiling, watching them dance until they were gone. The whole kitchen took on a lemony smell. Over the metallic noise of running water splashing on pans, she suddenly heard it again. It was louder than hot water ringing through the faucet or hitting cold spoons, louder than cups overflowing. It was her body humming. She was vibrating like a tuning fork. She closed her eyes to listen. Fireworks, sparklers striking on and off beneath her skin—not blood rushing through her, not the sound of her heart—but small cannon fire, gun salutes, crashing plates beat out a rhythm inside her.

THE FEMALE BRAIN A film by Whitney Cummings Starring Whitney Cummings, Toby Kebbell, Beanie Feldstein, Cecily Strong, Sofia Vergara, Deon Cole, Blake Griffin, Lucy Punch and James Marsden 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival World Premiere Saturday, June 17th at 5:45PM | Arclight Culver City Theatre 2 – World Premiere Sunday, June 18th at 10:00 AM | Culver Theatre 8 – Press & Industry Screening Running Time: 98 minutes Press Contact: The DDA Group [email protected] [email protected] SYNOPSIS A romantic ensemble comedy about modern day relationships, The Female Brain provides insight into the complexities of the male vs female brain at varying stages of love: whether it’s finding the right romantic balance; parenting; expressing emotion; or simply admitting shortcomings when a bathroom remodel goes awry. In the end, detached researcher Dr. Brizendine has to admit that her study of the brain might have a bias that she did not initially consider. DIRECTOR WHITNEY CUMMINGS Q&A with Writer/Director Whitney Cummings Tell us about the concept and story behind The Female Brain. How did the idea/project come to you? I read the book and was enthralled by all the science of it. I was fascinated by all the things I learned about not only female brains, but the brain in general. We all have this incredibly powerful machine in our skulls making lots of decisions without us, and we know next to nothing about it! I was shocked that they don’t teach us about our brains in school. I became obsessed with how our primordial, reptilian brains sabotage our modern relationships.
