  • Houston Rapper Kirko Bangz Is Riding a Buzz Right Now Worthy of Attention
Houston rapper Kirko Bangz is riding a buzz right now worthy of attention. With a DJ Drama hosted mixtape blazing the streets now, Kirko’s been gaining a foothold in the talented Southern rap scene. MTV’s RapFix Representing Houston, Kirko Bangz is one of the most popular young MCs on the 'net. He can harmonize and rap, so it's no surprise that the Drake comparisons are starting to roll in. His single, 'Drank In My Cup,' strengthened his star power and after dropping his most recent mixtape, 'The Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa,' Bangz is not only perfecting his craft but well on his way to etching out his own niche in the hip-hop arena. AOL’s TheBoomBox.com - “Black History Month 2012: 10 New Black Artists” (#5) Kirko Bangz is the type of artist that some people may not truly appreciate until hindsight becomes a factor…there’s something authentic about his style that cannot be ignored…As long as he continues with his progression (no pun intended) and shows that he’s more than radio- friendly, he could get there much sooner than later. AllHipHop.com [Kirko Bangz] has a lyrical smoothness emphasizes originality and a modern sexy appeal. Kirko makes racy selections for the women followed by witty street freestyles embraced by the fellas and getting better by the second at mastering his own identity. HipHopDX.com Kirko Bangz may be known solely for his slow trippy hit of the summer, Drank in My Cup, but with his newest project, Procrastination Kills 4, he promises to prove that he is a true artist and not an "auto-tune singing ass n*gga." GlobalGrind.com This kid is going to be a problem once people really take notice.

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of the Liberal Arts PASSING, PASSAGES, AND PASSKEYS: POST-CIVIL RIGHTS SATIRISTS UNLOCK THE MASTER’S HOUSE A Dissertation in English By Mahpiua-Luta Deas © 2012 Mahpiua-Luta Deas Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2012 ii The dissertation of Mahpiua-Luta Deas was reviewed and approved by the following: Aldon L. Nielsen The George and Barbara Kelly Professor of American Literature Dissertation Adviser Chair of Committee Linda F. Selzer Associate Professor of English Shirley Moody Assistant Professor of English Lovalerie King Associate Professor of English Director of the Africana Research Center Garrett A. Sullivan Professor of English Director of Graduate Studies, English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT In the post-civil rights era, which is marked by the eradication of legalized racial boundaries, racial passing should be unnecessary and obsolete. Yet contemporary satirists have found satiric portrayals of racial passing to be productive on two levels. On a plot-level, they use passing to interrogate contemporary racial subjectivity and to both explore racial advances and to critique persistent racial inequities. On a structural level, they write fiction that challenges the prescriptive and restrictive aesthetic criteria that they believe African American fiction is required to meet. Ultimately, this fiction offers dynamic critiques of contemporary racial identity and textual production. These authors use satire to examine how the fictional depiction of racial identities/bodies informs, depends on, and dictates the textual body and vice versa. The purpose of the study is to draw on two parallel contemporary literary theories, racial passing and satire, in order to analyze the works of five of the most important and recognized contemporary satiric writers of the post-civil rights generation: Percival Everett, Paul Beatty, Mat Johnson, Trey Ellis, and Adam Mansbach.

FACULTADE DE FILOLOXÍA DEPARTAMENTO DE FILOLOXÍA INGLESA GRAO EN INGLÉS: ESTUDOS LINGÜÍSTICOS E LITERARIOS Beyoncé’s Lemonade: “A winner don’t quit” ANDREA PATIÑO DE ARTAZA TFG 2017 Vº Bº COORDINADORA MARÍA FRÍAS RUDOLPHI Table of Contents Abstract 1. Introduction 3 2. Methodology 4 3. Beyonce's Lemonade (2016) 5 3.1 Denial: “Hold Up” 6 3.2 Accountability: “Daddy Lessons” 12 3.3 Hope: “Freedom” 21 3.4 Formation 33 4. Conclusion 44 5. Works Cited 46 Appendix 49 Abstract Beyoncé’s latest album has become an instant social phenomenon worldwide. Given its innovative poetic, visual, musical and socio-politic impact, the famous and controversial African American singer has taken an untraveled road—both personal and professional. The purpose of this essay is to provide a close reading of the poetry, music, lyrics and visuals in four sections from Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade (2016). To this end, I have chosen what I believe are the most representative sections of Lemonade together with their respective songs. Thus, I focus on the song “Hold Up” from Denial; “Daddy Lessons” from Accountability, “Freedom” from Hope, and “Formation,” where Beyoncé addresses topics such as infidelity, racism, women’s representation, and racism and inequality. I analyse these topics through a close-reading and interpretation of Warsan Shire’s poetry (a source of inspiration), as well as Beyoncé’s own music, lyrics, and imagery. From this analysis, it is safe to say that Lemonade is a relevant work of art that will perdure in time, since it highlights positive representations of African-Americans, at the same time Beyoncé critically denounces the current racial unrest lived in the USA.
