From the Desk of Father Steve: Finding Truth in the Lyrics of our Hymns

“Troubled souls, why will you scatter like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander from a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner and more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior, there is healing in His blood.”

-Hymn: There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy, verse 3 -Composer: Frederick Faber, 19th century

“There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” is a hymn written by Father Frederick Faber, a Catholic priest who was a famous hymn writer in the 1800’s. I chose verse three for our reflection this weekend because it speaks to a critically important point about God- there is no one who is beyond the reach of His mercy. So often we are tempted to think that a person, perhaps even ourselves, has done things that are so bad that God cannot possibly forgive them, and even if He would forgive, the person themselves is beyond hope of change or conversion because they have wandered so far from the truth; they are a hopeless cause. Well, nothing could be further from the truth, because God’s mercy knows no limits except our freedom. In other words, the only sins that God cannot forgive are the ones that we refuse to confess to Him, the ones which we refuse to ask forgiveness for. It can seem too good to be true, but it’s not- as I have said before, God’s love and mercy for us is not too good to be true. It’s just good and it’s true. And so, Father Faber is gently chiding us in his lyrics for wandering from God’s love, a love that is so good and perfect and fulfilling and true. Of course, no matter what we may do, no matter how bad, God’s love for us doesn’t ever change or lessen. But we can choose not to allow God’s love into our hearts and lives. We can choose to say “no” to God. But the moment that we say “yes,” the moment that we ask for forgiveness, God is there, ready to forgive, ready to welcome the sinner, to give us His grace, and to heal us through the mercy that is found in the blood that Jesus poured out on our behalf. To illustrate this for us, let me tell you a story. It’s 100% true. During the early 200’s, there was a priest in Rome whose name was Hippolytus. Hippolytus was fiercely dedicated to the truths of Catholic doctrine, and was convinced that many of the clergy of his day were much too lax and too willing to put up with having people around them who did not hold theologically and doctrinally sound and true beliefs. In fact, Hippolytus was so rigorous in his beliefs that he thought the Church needed to call out and denounce those who didn’t believe everything that the Church held to be true. He even criticized the current at the time, , because he didn’t think the pope was taking action quickly enough against those who Hippolytus thought were false teachers. Hippolytus publicly denounced Pope Zephyrinus, calling him incompetent, saying that he was unworthy to be the pope and that he was simply being used by another man, a deacon named Callistus, to promote Callistus’ ambitions. Then, when Callistus was elected pope after Zephyrinus died in the year 217, Hippolytus immediately broke communion with the Roman and had himself “elected” as an anti-pope in opposition to Pope Callistus. Hippolytus called himself and his followers the real Catholic Church, and Hippolytus would continue to act as “pope” for the next 18 years, doing so throughout the papacy of Pope Callistus and his two immediate legitimate successors. The second legitimate successor was Pope Pontian, who was pope from 230-235. In the year 235, the Roman emperor, carrying out a persecution against the Church, forcibly exiled Pope Pontian to an Italian island where he was put into a brutal forced labor camp. About the same time, the anti-pope Hippolytus was also exiled to that same island. The two men met, and eventually, the true pope, Pope Pontian, reconciled and brought the anti-pope Hippolytus back into full communion with the Church. Shortly thereafter, both men died a martyr’s death, and because of that fact, they are referred to today as Pope Pontian and Saint Hippolytus. They even share a feast day together each year- . And, Eucharistic Prayer II, which is often used at daily Masses, was written by St. Hippolytus. Imagine that- a man who had set himself up as an anti-pope to the legitimate pope of the Church and started his own church- even he was not beyond God’s mercy. Through the ministry of the very office that he had once rejected, Hippolytus was forgiven and brought him back into the fold, and now he is a saint of the Church. If God can do that for St. Hippolytus, he can do that for anyone! God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve
