Rabbi’s Summer Message

A few short weeks ago we commemorated the 50th anniversary of the “Six Day War” and the liberation of Jerusalem. That miraculous moment in history when, as some of you remember so vividly, we saw the Hand of G-d working miraculously on behalf of Am Yisrael - The Jewish People. Was this a victory only for our brothers and sisters who live in the Holy Land? Is it a miracle that affects us only in that we can visit our most Holy sites? What significance does this recent epic chapter in history have for us here and now? In our recent Adult Education series, we discussed the importance that Eretz Yisrael - the Land of Israel has for the Jew- ish People. It represents the embodiment of our mission on this earth, to serve as a “Nation of Light” - as a nation that embodies in every aspect of her being, the plan that Hashem had for the world. This of course must comprise of all as- pects of a civil society. Hence the Torah must have a lab in which all of its ideas are tested and demonstrated this is the Land of Israel. The geography of Israel is particularly suited to its being a light for the nations, positioned as it is at the crossroads of the world, at the nexus of Africa and Europe, between the West and the Far East, Israel will have repre- sentatives of the entire world community crossing her doorstep observing the project of a nation state putting into prac- tice the principles of monotheistic ethics in its daily function and taking the ideas to their home countries. Yerushalayim represents the centrality of prayer to this project. This nation state dedicated to the service of G-d in life must also dedicate time and space to reconnect and reaffirm the relationship with that G-d whom we serve. Israel as a whole represents living as a Jew, Jerusalem represents being a Jew in the heart. One without the other is incomplete. We then, each and every one of us, are ambassadors of Eretz Yisrael, to represent the ideal of a unified Israel, a spiritual idea and a relationship with G-d integrated into real life. This “hasbara” publicizes the true inner identity of Eretz Yisrael beyond politics and conflicts and it is our sacred duty to engage in this spiritual diplomacy on behalf of our millennia- long relationship with our physical and spiritual homeland. May Hashem grant that we see miracles in Israel today just as He did miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time. Amen.

David Wasserman THE THREE WEEKS The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period observed in the summer, dur- ing which we mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple and the beginning of a still-ongoing Exile. The period begins on the 17th of Tammuz, with a fast day marking the day that the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Ro- mans in 69 CE. It reaches its climax and conclusion with the fast of the 9th of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. The 9th of Av (Tisha B’av) is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also marked by many other tragedies, spanning our na- tion's history. There are various mourning-related customs and observances that are followed for the entire three-week period. We do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, or listen to music. No weddings are held. This year Tammuz 17 falls on Tuesday, July 11th. The final Nine Days of the Three Weeks are a time of intensified mourning. Starting on the 1st of Av, Monday, July 24th, we refrain from eating meat, drinking wine and from wearing freshly laundered clothes until after the conclusion of the fast on Tuesday, August 1st with the exception of Shabbat. The 9th of Av is a more stringent fast than the 17th of Tammuz. This year it starts on Monday evening, July 31st. We put on a pair of non-leather shoes before the fast begins. Following Ma’ariv, “Eichah” (the Book of Lamentations) is read. For the duration of the fast day we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, and marital rela- tions. Additionally, until midday- 1:01 pm - we sit on the floor or on low stools. The end of the fast on Tuesday, August 1st is at 8:45 pm. Our Sages tell us that those who mourn Jerusalem’s destruction will merit seeing it rebuilt. May that day come soon, and then all the mournful dates on the calendar will be transformed into days of tremendous joy and happiness. Volume LXXIXI Issue 5

20TH ANNIVERSARY TALMUD TORAH CELEBRATION

On Sunday, June 11th, the Talmud Torah celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding. Our outstanding and dedicated Youth Director, Ricky Schneider, arranged a most meaningful tribute honoring Rabbi Gans for his vision in creating and supporting the Talmud Torah. Former founders, volunteer teachers and students, along with members of the Gans family gathered in the Kent Auditorium for a sumptuous dinner with beautiful floral arrangements and tastefully arranged table settings and decorations, .

Plaques of appreciation were presented to our former president and major financial supporter of our Shul, Mr. Herb Jaffe, in recognition for all his financial support all these years for the shul, to facilitate the Talmud Torah being accessible to all Jewish children, at no charge. Also honored were Marina & Josef Itskovitch, our former Vice President, who worked tirelessly to ensure the Talmud Torah had the financial support it needed from the Shul for its events and programs.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the our dear Rabbi Gans. Making the presentation was his dear son, Chaim. Chaim spoke about how much he loves his father for all he has done for him all these years and he still appreciates his father preparing him for his Bar Mitzvah.

Many Shul members came out in support of the Talmud Torah and to support its mission of inspiring the next generation of Jewish youth. Rabbi Mendelson concluded the program with Birkat Hamazon after a delicious spread of desserts.

Special thank you to Jasmine Larian for stepping up in leading the Talmud Torah along with Ricky Schneider.

We wish the Talmud Torah the very best and continued Hatzlacha for the next 20 years and beyond! We thank Mitchell Slepian for these fantastic photos.

In Memoriam, Rabbi Dr. Joel Hochman

Yeshiva University Mourns the Passing of Longtime Sy Syms Professor Yeshiva University is saddened by the passing of Rabbi Dr. Joel Hochman z”l, the Philip H. Cohen Professor of Accounting at the Sy Syms School of Business. Hoch- man had served as a member of the University faculty for 23 years.

Professor Hochman’s dedication to his students served as his north star for more than 20 years as a faculty leader,” said Dr. Moses Pava, the Alvin Einbender Uni- versity Professor of Business Ethics at Sy Syms and former dean of the school. “He was a role model and consummate teacher. He exemplified the best of To- rah U’Madda, and he will be dearly missed by his colleagues and friends.”

Hochman received his undergraduate degree from YU in 1973 and earned semi- cha at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in 1999. He built an accom- plished career as a certified public accountant before joining the academic world to teach the subject, first at Fordham Uni- versity, Hofstra University and Queens College before being named an associate professor at Sy Syms in 1994.

During his tenure at the business school, Hochman served as both associate and interim dean. He also served as assistant to the rabbi at Congregation Machane Chodosh and educational director at Congregation Havurat Yisroel, both in Forest Hills, Queens. “I will always be grateful to Professor Hochman, who hired me as an adjunct professor when he was interim dean,” said Sy Syms Associate Dean Michael Strauss. “He will be greatly missed by the faculty, administration, and particularly by the stu- dents that he loved so much.”
