We wrapped up the 2015-16 school year with lovely graduation ceremonies. The speeches were inspiring, funny and moving. Mr. Carlson read the names for the 8th grade graduates in his last U-Prep graduation ceremony as he moves on to a new chapter of his career. The graduates were all thrilled and excited. The 8th grade students went on to their traditional bowling party and our graduating seniors had an amazing Sober Grad party right here on campus. Special thanks to all those working behind the scenes to make the graduations and celebrations special for our students and families. Thank you especially to Mr. Williams who organized the 8th grade graduation and events and to Ms. Haworth who masterfully handled the arrangements for the Senior Awards Day and high school graduation. Kudos also to Mr. Cabral, the senior advisor who took on the Senior Trip and the arrangements for Disneyland. Best of luck to our seniors as they move on to the next exciting phase of their lives. We are so proud of all of our graduates and hope they have a wonderful summer.

Panther Pride June 2016 Newsletter University Preparatory School 3 2016 NATIONAL LATIN EXAM RESULTS

Congratulations to our students on their hard work! Over 154,000 students from all 50 states and 19 foreign countries participated in the 2016 National Latin Exam. This year, 73 Latin II, III, & IV students took the NLE. Out of that number 62 students earned high honors; 85% of these Latin students earned an award!

Awards for the 2016 Exam According to Level

There were 40 questions on each exam. Awards are based on point values above the NATIONAL MEDIAN SCORE for each level (half of the 150,000+ student who participated in the exam earned at or fewer than that national point value while the other half earned above that point value). Everyone who scored above the national average earns a merit award of some kind. If a student scored the national average and won no honor, they still did better than half the people who took the exam this year.

Here are some important statistics regarding this year’s very successful round of exams:

 30 students won a 1st place Gold Medal for a Summa Cum Laude Score  14 students won a 2nd place Silver Medal for a Maxima Cum Laude Score  9 students won a 3rd place Bronze Medal for a Magna Cum Laude Score  6 students won a 4th place Iron Medal for a Cum Laude Score

In addition to those awards, the 8th grade Latin students produced the following results on the Introduction to Latin Exam:

 3 students won a 1st place Perfect Score Certificate  30 students won a 2nd place Certificate of Outstanding Achievement  58 students won a 3rd place Certificate of Achievement

U-PREP DANCE TEAM ENJOYS CONTINUED SUCCESS

The U-Prep Dance Team finished off their season with a great weekend in San Mateo at the Revolution Talent Competition. They took 10 routines to this competition and all of them received high awards. The team brought home 4 Elite Golds and 6 Platinum awards, and 9 out of the 10 routines placed in the overall awards. One of the routines earned a special judge’s choice award for outstanding showmanship, and Mrs. Holt's lyrical piece received a choreographer's award. The most coveted award of the weekend went to the dance, Heart Cry. Not only did it place 1st overall in its category, but it was the highest scoring senior dance from the whole weekend! Heart Cry received the Star Dance Alliance Champion Award which led to an invitation to compete in an elite competition on the east coast this summer. Mrs. Kinneavy is extremely proud of how well the dance team did, and appreciates all of the time and effort they put in to

making the U-Prep Dance Team so successful. It has been a great year!

Ms. Wilhelm took 8 students to Whiskeytown for the first annual Whiskeytown Paint-Off on May 7-8. There the students competed in the Plein Air competition within the ‘17 and under age group’. There were approximately 40 professional/semi professional painters who competed in the ‘18 and over’ competition (Ms. Wilhelm competed too).
