Vanier at the 2021 Saltise Conference

Under the theme of Moving Forward Together: Opportunities and Challenges for Pedagogical Innovation - Aller de l’avant ensemble : opportunités et défis pour l’innovation pédagogique, the 2021 Saltise Conference will welcome contributions from several Vanier teachers and professionals. Here is a brief overview of their presentations.

A three-step approach to pre-class reading and writing. Virtual poster presentation, June 2, 3:45

Vanier Physics teacher Stephen Cohen will describe how he uses pre-reading and reflective writing as essential tools in a teacher's arsenal when trying to optimize a flipped classroom approach. He will detail the finely tuned reflective writing process that has become integrated into all of his physics courses. Stephen has built a small library of reading materials and run reflective writing assignments that consist of three parts: summarize, elaborate, ask. Subsequent classes address common questions students have posed in their writings.

Developing 21st C Skills with Online Curation and Social Annotation, June 3, 2:15 pm

Vanier’s Patti Kingsmill, Kelly Macdonald, Kevin Lenton, Heather Roffey, Toby Moneit, and Aurora Flewwellyng-Skup, with Phoebe Jackson () will introduce online curation (OC) and social annotation (SA) two strategies that help develop 21st century skills. OC involves collecting, selecting, organizing, annotating and publishing content online. SA entails commenting on discourses in a collaborative online environment. Both help develop critical thinking, research, communication, and collaboration, and both support peer- teaching. After introducing these strategies, teachers will share experiences integrating them into the classroom as well as resources designed to support that integration.

Biological Engineering of Yeast Cells as a Pedagogical Tool

Vanier Biology’s Christopher Gregg will describe how a team of student researchers from Vanier College participated in a project to engineer the yeast, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, to express a gene involved in the production of an opioid like molecule called noscapine. Students developed many coveted skills in the field of synthetic biology and had the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge they learned throughout their education. This talk will look at the data obtained from this research and discuss how research projects like this can be used to teach competencies in the CEGEP Science Program.

A DIY Light board to Create engaging Educational Videos

Vanier’s Stefan Bracher, Christopher Gregg, Lissiene Neiva, And Edward Awad will describe their experience producing videos using a light board built at Vanier using a Saltise Mini-Grant of 1300 dollars. A survey of the students revealed that the majority found the produced videos useful. However, they equally liked videos where the teacher is standing in front of a traditional whiteboard or performs some demonstrations. More details on the project and the links to the videos can be found here: https://www.saltise.ca/innovations/mini-grants/a-diy-lightboard/

ENGAGING THE LEARNER Active student engagement - Developing Campus Green Space: An interdisciplinary, inter-collegial, virtually supported project

Vanier’s DAVID HOIDA and GABRIEL FLACKS (Champlain College) will describe an interdisciplinary, hands-on collaboration between Vanier and Champlain students that built an awareness of key elements critical for successful environmental sustainability. Champlain College students in a Humanities class explored various aspects of sustainability that could impact upon their campus. Vanier Botany students developed expertise on various green sustainability practices, which could be used when considering greenspace expansion on a college campus. Both groups of students communicated throughout the semester to realize sustainable college campus proposals for Vanier and Champlain. In addition, Vanier Biology students supported these proposals through a series of ecology labs that created soils analysis reports based on samples from both colleges. The Biology students integrated with the two other student groups by participating in the virtual exchanges and providing key information needed for successful sustainability proposals

Active Rubrics round table session R08, on June 3rd.

Tim Campbell from Special Care Counselling will talk about Active Rubrics. Providing rubrics is a well-known best practice for assessment; however, it is too often a static document. Tim will share experiences of using active rubrics and video rubrics in the classroom and online environments for students to self- and peer-edit their written work.

Engagement, Assessment, and Support in Digital Teaching

The following Profweb articles may be of special interest to teachers looking for ways to engage students in online learning. To access an article, click on its title.

At-home Biology Labs in Times of Pandemic By Neerusha Gokool Baurhoo, Biology teacher and Pedagogical Counsellor at Vanier

Congratulations to Vanier’s own Neerusha Gokool Baurhoo for her recent publication in Profweb! This real-life story presents her ingenious at-home laboratories designed to engage students at a distance. Find out how Neerusha created lab kits for her students to be able to conduct virtual labs in small groups they normally would have done on campus, at home, thereby maintaining the hands-on and engaging nature of lab experiments.

Influencing the Progress of an Authentic Task Simulation in Distance Learning by Eric Tremblay, Teacher, Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy Putting students in contact with their future work environment is, for them, as formative as it is motivating. In a course that Eric Tremblay teaches in the Paramedic Care Program, he had the exceptional collaboration of 4 paramedics who agreed to do a pre-hospital emergency care simulation during which the students were periodically questioned, in real time, about the nature and dosage of the medication to be administered... All this, while respecting the social distancing measures that the fall 2020 session required.

Creating a Sense of Proximity with Your Students, even at a Distance: Supporting Students Continually by Julien Martineau, Teacher, Social annotation has become the strategy to use for productive academic reading. Mastering the functionalities of digital tools and platforms in order to accomplish specific tasks is already a challenge in itself, for both students and teachers. There is another level of difficulty: how do you combine these platforms and their functionalities in order to create an interesting, motivating and effective learning dynamic? Julien Martineau explains how he used the Gather platform to connect with his students.

AQPC Annual Conference

Click here for registration information.

I Annotate 2021 (All-virtual Conference)

The free conference takes place Monday, June 21 through Friday June 25th from 12pm-4pm. After a 2020 hiatus due to COVID, this will be the eighth annual gathering of educators, scholars, researchers, publishers, journalists, fact-checkers, and technologists engaged with open annotation practices and tools.

The shift to remote education during the pandemic dramatically accelerated social annotation among teachers and students around the world. The program will include a special focus on how annotation has become a powerful practice to help students succeed by making reading active, visible, and social in both face-to-face and online learning. In keeping with this year's theme — reading together — our touchstone across all sessions will be how more and more people are coming together through social annotation to share ideas, ask questions, and make connections.

Symposium description: In , inclusive pedagogical practices rely notably on the framework provided by the Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Created in the 1990s, UDL is a student-centred and living model constantly evolving with scientific findings and society’s changing realities. Far from being the only tool solicited in universal pedagogy, UDL has nevertheless played an important role in the province’s attempt to offer equal learning opportunities to everyone. Today, in 2021, where does Quebec stand in terms of higher education inclusive pedagogy? What are the research and practices blind spots? What are the obstacles and preconceptions holding us back from adopting more inclusive teaching methods? Conversely, which

innovative practices have brought us closer to this goal? What further actions do we still need to take to be more universal in our pedagogical approaches? These are all questions underlining the spirit of this symposium.
