June 7 City Cowboys May 3 Heartland July 5 Midnight Special CLUB NEWS from our President Hi Everyone Happy New Year to all. Have you made a New Year’s resolution for 2009? Or are you like me and just deal with whatever comes each day? Wow what a show we had for Christmas. Lorraine was elsewhere at a Christmas party with her two beautiful granddaughters and arrived back halfway through the show to take over hosting from yours truly. Our band for the day was Midnight Special, who are always guaranteed to give a great show. We also had our special guest artist Mahalia Fox, who is the SCCM Junior Champion of Champions. We also had various committee members strutting their stuff. They were Rob Smith who sang a beautiful Christmas carol, Lorraine Wakefield who sang and yodelled, Tarlee Schultz was our Christmas angel, Evonne Rayson read a poem with a message (see page 11), Josie Evans and Raelz sang together and yours truly as Tanme Whynot sang. (Good fun!) We also had a young new comer in Georgia Hicks. She wooed the audience and showed a lot of potential. Ian (Flasher) Fisk’s Christmas hat was a great talking point for the day. (I wonder how many toilet rolls he can fit under it?) Our dear Joy Champion made our Christmas cake and Elaine Marks (who had just turned 90 years young) cut the cake for us. Now for our January show. We had a great band Phoenix. What a nice bunch of people to work with. Everyone loved their music and had a great time. I hosted the show for the day as Lorraine was on a much deserved holiday at Port Hughes. During the day we had a sample of 6 songs from the band called Top Dead Centre. They were very good and the crowd enjoyed them. cont’d next page The Adelaide Country Music Club Inc., operates from ‘COUNTRY CALL’ IS THE NEWSLETTER OF the SLOVENIAN CLUB ADELAIDE THE ADELAIDE COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB INC. at 11 LaSalle St, Dudley Park (off Pym St.) A MONTHLY PUBLICATION EDITED BY THE PUBLICITY OFFICER For information about The Adelaide Country Music Advertising in this newsletter is available at the Club write to: following rates: PO Box 307 MODBURY NORTH SA 5092 Full page (approx 175mm x 260mm) $40.00 or contact any of the committee personnel listed Half Page (approx 130mm x 175 mm) $20.00 below Quarter Page (approx 85 mm x 130mm) $10.00 Actual size may vary slightly, depending on orientation Committee Members and layout of adjacent articles. She was down from Brisbane. I don’t remember when I last saw her. Well bye for now. Hope to see you all at our next show. Keep well. Thank God for Country Music. Di Smith (President) Talent is something God gives you, Experience is something you give yourself. Daniel Louis Rottinhans LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP December At our December meeting we had Warren Johncock and his Midnight Special band. As always they put on a great Christmas show. The microphones and stands were draped in tinsel, and Warren appeared in a number of different variations of head gear! Our special guest artist was Mahalia Fox, the 2008 SACCM Junior Champion of Champions, she clearly showed why she won. She had a busy December, at the SA Stampede, the Kilburn RSL the night before and with our Club! In case you can’t read the words on Some committee members made surprise Lorraine’s hat it appearances on the stage! They included our says singing Secretary, Rob Smith, Lorraine Wakefield sang and yodelled beautifully, Tarlee Schultz, as “I Believe in Santa an angel showing a big heart (remember she is a Mahalia complete with tinsel decorated Clause” heart lung transplant recipient), Tanme Whynot, in microphone stand a country music singer outfit, Evonne Rayson read a poem on ‘Hugs’ (see page 11), Josie Evans was accompanied in song by Raelz. Raelz also sang a few songs on her own. We also had a young lady, Georgia very ably sang a few Christmas songs, including one with Lorraine. Many of the committee and other members dressed ‘Christmassy’. To the relief of many, the flasher did not make an appearance this year. Some people unkindly suggested that his special Christmas hat either looked like a tea pot cosy or a toilet roll cover! Everyone attending was given a little present. It was a Happy Holiday plastic bag containing a special 2009 ACMC calendar, a circular Club badge, a ACMC sticker and a chocolate. Santa must have made two visits, one before most arrived putting lollies on each table and later in person. He was caught on camera kissing Evonne! Evonne Rayson gave each of her catering helpers a little present before they posed for a picture. All were also given a small Xmas pudding plus a tasty piece of Christmas cake made by Joy Champion (thanks Joy). Elaine Marks who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, cut the cake. Our Country Call Newsletter was given to all members at the meeting. Those not picked up on the day were posted the next day. Considerable postage expense was saved and much effort in folding, taping! We even had an overseas visitor, Merilyn Henderson from Kangaroo Island. Merilyn has a regular country music program on KIX FM 90.7 Monday & Thursday from 7.30 am -9.am. Another visitor was Whitey (Brian White) an infamous drover. See Rob Smith’s words elsewhere in this issue. Ian Fisk (Lorraine liked most of the above that appeared in SACCM January Prelude and said to use it!) • THE JOHN BYRNE BAND the John Byrne Band Is Led by Dublin Native and Philadelphia-Based John Byrne
THE JOHN BYRNE BAND The John Byrne Band is led by Dublin native and Philadelphia-based John Byrne. Their debut album, After the Wake, was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic in 2011. With influences ranging from Tom Waits to Planxty, John’s songwriting honors and expands upon the musical and lyrical traditions of his native and adopted homes. John and the band followed up After the Wake in early 2013 with an album of Celtic and American traditional tunes. The album, Celtic/Folk, pushed the band on to the FolkDJ Charts, reaching number 36 in May 2015. Their third release, another collection of John Byrne originals, entitled “The Immigrant and the Orphan”, was released in Sept 2015. The album, once again, draws heavily on John’s love of Americana and Celtic Folk music and with the support of DJs around the country entered the FolkDJ Charts at number 40. Critics have called it “..a powerful, deeply moving work that will stay with you long after you have heard it” (Michael Tearson-Sing Out); “The Vibe of it (The Immigrant and the Orphan) is, at once, as rough as rock and as elegant as a calm ocean..each song on this album carries an honesty, integrity and quiet passion that will draw you into its world for years to come” (Terry Roland – No Depression); “If any element of Celtic, Americana or Indie-Folk is your thing, then this album is an absolute yes” (Beehive Candy); “It’s a gorgeous, nostalgic record filled with themes of loss, hope, history and lost loves; everything that tugs at your soul and spills your blood and guts…The Immigrant and the Orphan scorches the earth and emerges tough as nails” (Jane Roser – That Music Mag) The album was released to a sold-out crowd at the storied World Café Live in Philadelphia and 2 weeks later to a sold-out crowd at the Mercantile in Dublin, Ireland.

20TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC CONFERENCE NASHVILLE TN K A S E Y C H A M B E R S: V O C A L S T Y L E A N D C U L T U R A L I D E N T I T Y L E I G H C A R R I A G E ‘You know things are going to hell when the freshest young voice in American roots music is an Australian.’ Rolling Stone (Sheffield, 2001: 73) Kasey Chambers is redefining the image and sound of alternative country music. Her style is challenging notions of cultural musical identity and the vocal characteristics that are associated with a particular environment. The ways in which Chambers approaches Country Music and the connection to the development of cultural identity is reflected in her music . The connection of what? In this paper I will touch on the phenomenon of her broad Australian-speaking accent and her American accented singing voice. The success of Chambers’ sound raises vital issues about the national character in Australian popular music. It is an interesting representation of the globalisation of international music culture that an Australian singer is being so highly regarded in the North American press as representing the latest (re-) incarnation of American roots/country music. In order to understand and comment comprehensively on the implications of foreign sources, cultural influences and their combined impact on new practices, in particular with Chambers, a thorough analysis must include music and industry marketing, musical fashion and tastes, lyrics and musical style, instrumentation, arranging and orchestration.
