BISHOP’S MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2015

We have begun the month of June dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion is dear to everyone because it touches us and our heart too. This devotion is based on divine love manifested to us through Jesus. He has loved us and gave Himself totally for us. In order to know the depth, breadth, length and height of His love, He opened His heart to us on the cross. Let us love this devotion and show our love to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion calls us for the reparation of our sins and sins of the whole world. Let us recite the ejaculations of the Sacred Heart saying ‘Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us’. Every one should recite daily the prayer of the consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On 21 June I will be celebrating my birthday and feast day. That day being Sunday I will be away from the residence on Pastoral Visit. I request you to pray for me. I will be remembering you in a special manner and pray for you. I remain grateful to you for your cooperation and goodwill. Since the admissions to the schools/colleges have begun I wish that every child of our community gets education at least upto XII standard. Many Parishes have an educational fund to help the poor students. I invoke God’s blessings upon you. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus give you spiritual riches and bless the families of your Parish. + Aloysius Paul D’Souza Bishop of 128 01–06–2015 Inter Nos

8 Committees of the Diocesan Pastoral Parishad At regular intervals the coordinators of 8 Pastoral Committees meet to evaluate the pastoral work done by the committees. On 18-5-2015, the coordinators held a meeting with the Secretary and Joint Secretary of the DPP. The Vicar General presided over the meeting. Each coordinator placed before the committee the works turned out after the last meeting. The Spiritual Committee could have done more work if there was a full time priest coordinator. The adoration in the Codialbail Chapel takes place every day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Still more services of spiritual counseling, receiving the petitions, distributing them to the various groups could be done. The coordinator of the property commission expressed that the Central Committee is working well, whereas varado committee has not reported its activities to the Central Committee of DPP. Depending on the dynamism of the Varado committee the parish committee works. If parish committee is dormant due to the non-interaction of the varado committee, much cannot be achieved. The secretary of the Media Committee said that he does not have personnel in his office due to lack of funds. Hence he could not do much. However he said that the Diocesan web site is ready which is updated regularly. The coordinator of the Civic Awareness committee expressed that they have held varado meetings and also visited some parishes to give a boost to the people to participate in the Grama Panchayat elections. The response was good. He said that there is scope for more work of organising the youth in parishes. This needs a full time priest. The other committees have done the work according to the needs. The anxiety of everyone is that there is no much activity done at the varado level. Since Vicar vara is the chief coordinator, a request is made to them to hold the meetings of coordinators and enthuse them. The result should be seen if every member of the Parish Pastoral Parishad were to take up the pastoral work in the parish. We should not allow the enthusiasm to cool down. - Rev. Denis Prabhu Chief Coordinator 133 01–06–2015 Inter Nos

EXPOSURE PROGRAMME OF SEMINARIANS OF MANGALORE DIOCESE I would like to place before you a small account of the activities of our seminarians during the summer vacation 2015. There were 15 Theologians, 5 Regents, 19 Philosophers, a total of 39. During their two months of holidays, 9 philosophy students spent one month in Gulbarga Diocese. They expressed their happiness in working in a totally different set up of Christian communities in Bidar and other districts. The Bishop and priests of Gulbarga Diocese had given them opportunities to involve themselves in various mission activities. We are grateful to the Bishop, the Vicar General and the Priests and Sisters of Gulbarga Diocese. As they are the beginners in the major seminary, they will carry these memories during their further formation. Every week two brothers each rendered their service at St Joseph’s Seminary. There was lot of work to be supervised and attended to in the seminary in the renovation work of the buildings. They spent the time in all activities in the seminary to attend to various works. All the philosophy and theology students had Malayalam language learning course at St. Antony’s Poor Homes. The brothers of Udupi Diocese also attended it. Two Malayalam teachers were employed to teach them. It was an intense course. The Director and his collaborators cooperated and assisted in this programme. We are grateful to the Director and his team. The brothers spent ten days in the following institutions to learn and also work in helping the poor. Nine brothers were placed in Fr Muller Hospital, four brothers in Little Sisters of the Poor and four brothers in St. Antony’s Poor homes. I have received the reports on the performance of the brothers. Every one expressed their happiness of having young brothers in their institutions learning and serving the poor people. The institutions have made a request to send such batches in the future too. The students of I & II Theology attended Kannada language and culture heritage in Dharwad. All the Diocesan seminarians of all dioceses in Karnataka attended this programme. 134 01–06–2015 Inter Nos

They had opportunities to know each other, learn about the various situations and the pastoral work in different dioceses. On the whole they expressed that they profited much from this programme. While assessing the programme with the Bishop, the students expressed that they spent their time involving themselves in those programmes fruitfully. They said that they have learnt many things in a informal way which would help them in their pastoral ministry. This year they had a picnic and ‘know the varado’ programme in South Varado (Mudipu). They visited all the parishes and learnt the history, the pastoral work and pastoral commitments of the pastors etc. We thank all the fathers specially Rev. J. B. Saldanha and his team to have taken care of the board and lodge. The Rev. Parish Priests and the Religious in the varado were extremely kind and helpful to the brothers. Our Bishop in his remarks said that they have learnt the pastoral theology in action. The exposure programme helped them to know for themselves how the institutions run. When they become priests they are not new to these situations and institutions. This way of forming various groups also strengthened their bonds with one another. The Bishop thanked brothers for their enthusiasm and their guides for helping them tenderly. Congratulations and best wishes to all our seminarians. We wish them fruitful days in the seminary. They are the hope of our Diocese. Let us all encourage them and inspire them. - Rev. Denis Prabhu Vicar General
