The IBM(R) Storwize(R) Family of products delivers lower cost flash drive options that are optimized for read-intensive applications.

IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Large Form Factor (LFF) Expansion Enclosure Model 12F is the new hardware component of the SVC storage virtualization system. This model offers additional configuration flexibility and increased scalability with support for lower cost 3.5-inch NL-SAS drives.

IBM SVC Small Form Factor (SFF) Expansion Enclosure Model 24F is expanding support for 2.5-inch SAS hard disk drives to deliver additional configuration flexibility.

IBM Storwize V3700 and Storwize V5000 Gen1 now offer a 3.2 TB 12 Gb SAS 2.5- inch flash drive for select models.

Overview

A 1.92 TB, 12 Gb SAS, 2.5-inch read-intensive flash drive option is now available for the following IBM System Storage(R) models:

• Storwize V5000 models 124, 224, 324, and 24F • Storwize V7000 models 524 and 24F • SVC Model 24F

These drives are dual-port, hot-swappable, enterprise-class flash drives suitable for read intensive application workloads demanding cost-sensitive high performance.

IBM SVC offers the following enhancements: • SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12F delivers support for up to twelve 3.5- inch 12 Gb NL-SAS hard disk drives • SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F supports hard disk drives in addition to existing flash (solid state) drives for up to twenty-four 2.5-inch drives

Up to two expansion enclosures are supported by a Model DH8 node pair or I/O group delivering up to 24 disk drives and 192 TB of internal raw capacity in the LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12F and up to 48 drives and 153.6 TB of internal raw capacity in the SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F.

These drives are dual-port and hot-swappable, offering higher capacity options for high-performance environments. These drives support data transfer rates of up to 6 Gb per second when installed in Storwize V3700 and Storwize V5000 Gen1 systems.

Key prerequisites

The following model, enhancements and features require IBM Spectrum VirtualizeTM version 7.7, or later, for operation:

• SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12F and optional features • SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F support for hard disk drives and optional features

The 1.92 TB 12 Gb SAS 2.5-inch Read-Intensive Flash Drive requires IBM Spectrum Virtualize version 7.6.1.4, or later, for operation.

The 3.2 TB 12 Gb SAS 2.5-inch Flash Drive requires IBM Storwize Family Software version 7.4, or later, for operation.

Read-intensive drives

High density, read-intensive drives enable cost-sensitive applications to scale and achieve high read performance while maintaining traditional reliability and endurance levels. A 1.92 TB 12 Gb SAS 2.5-inch read-intensive flash drive option is now available for IBM Storwize V5000 (models 124, 224, 324, and 24F), Storwize V7000 (models 524 and 24F), and SVC Model 24F.

Traditionally, IBM Storwize Family flash drives have been built on enterprise-class mid to high endurance multi-level cell (MLC) flash and targeted for write-intensive or

The NAND flash used in read-intensive drives tend to be of lower endurance, consequently the number of write operations is more limited than in mainstream endurance flash drives.

SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure

IBM SVC is a storage virtualization system comprised of hardware components and a requisite licensed software program product, IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller. All functional capabilities for SVC system are delivered through IBM Spectrum Virtualize software.

SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12F is a hardware component of the SVC system that delivers internal storage. The SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure includes: • Two expansion canisters • Four 12 Gb SAS ports for attachment to the SVC Storage Engine (two ports per canister) • Twelve slots for 3.5-inch SAS drives • 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure with AC power supplies • A one-year warranty with on-site service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Drive options and intermix flexibility meet a complete range of needs

Expanding on the rich set of SVC capabilities, the SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure and the increased support of hard disk drives on the SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure help deliver on a complete range of data storage requirements, from highly utilized applications, to high-capacity, low usage applications, and with hybrid or all-flash solutions.

The SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure supports high-capacity, archival class 3.5-inch LFF drives in 4 TB, 6 TB, and 8 TB 7,200 rpm.

The following 2.5-inch SFF drives are supported in the SVC SFF Expansion Enclosure: • Flash drives: 400 GB, 800 GB, 1.6 TB, and 3.2 TB • High-performance, enterprise class disk drives: – 300 GB and 600 GB 15,000 rpm – 900 GB, 1.2 TB, and 1.8 TB 10,000 rpm • High-capacity, archival class nearline disk drives: 2 TB 7,200 rpm Up to two expansion enclosures are supported by a Model DH8 node pair or I/O group delivering up to 24 disk drives and 192 TB of internal raw capacity in LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12F and up to 48 drives and 153.6 TB of internal raw capacity in SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24F.

Hardware requirements SVC LFF Expansion Enclosures are shared between both nodes in the node pair. A node pair can have one or two shared expansion enclosures. Limitations SVC LFF Expansion Enclosure (Model 12F): Only one SAS port per canister is used for attachment to the SVC storage engine. The other SAS port is inactive.

Shipments to India: SVC Model 12F expansion enclosures shipped prior to the published planned availability date for India are not compliant with India certification and product labeling requirements.

If you did not acquire your machine from IBM as a direct shipment to India, you are responsible for validating the machine has the appropriate certifications and product labels.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities Physical configuration and installation planning

Physical configuration and installation planning are customer responsibilities.

It is a customer responsibility to review the NEBS and ETSI test results documents to determine the testing performed on the models and features meet their requirements. Contact your IBM sales representative or business partner to obtain a copy of the test result documents.

Logical configuration planning and application

Logical configuration planning is a customer responsibility. Application of the initial logical configuration and all subsequent modifications to the logical configuration is a customer responsibility.

You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet website or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

Cable orders As a convenience, a limited selection of cables can be ordered with the SVC machine. Refer to the Product number section for feature numbers.

Cables and installation services are also available from IBM Network Integration and Deployment Services, an IBM Global Services offering.

Cables are required to connect an expansion enclosure to the storage engine. This requires a 12 Gb mini-SAS HD 4x cable terminated with SFF-8644 connectors.

An IBM part or feature installed during the initial installation of an IBM machine is subject to the full warranty period specified by IBM. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country-specific and location-specific information.

CRU and On-site Service At IBM's discretion, you will receive specified CRU service, or IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Service level is: • 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4 hour average, same day response. Same day service level includes the installation of Tier 1 CRUs at no additional charge.

Non-IBM parts service IBM is now shipping machines with selected non-IBM parts that contain an IBM field replaceable unit (FRU) part number label. These parts are to be serviced during the IBM machine warranty period. IBM is covering the service on these selected non- IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty service procedures for the IBM machine apply.

The following service selections are available as maintenance options for your machine type.

On-site Service IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Service levels are:

• 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next business day response • 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, 4 hour average response, same business day • 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4 hour average response, same day • 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 2 hour average response, same day

Non-IBM parts service Under certain conditions, IBM provides services for selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services.

This service includes hardware problem determination (PD) on the non-IBM parts (for example, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory) installed within IBM machines and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.

If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.

The SVC Hardware Installation Guide specifies site preparation, physical requirements and installation (operating) environment, and any cabling included in the installation along with the approximate installation time in hours. Customer requests for installation of items not covered in the installation guide may be performed at the IBM hourly service rate designated for the machine.

Graduated program license charges apply No

Licensed Machine Code IBM Machine Code is licensed for use by a customer on the IBM machine for which it was provided by IBM under the terms and conditions of the IBM License Agreement for Machine Code, to enable the machine to function in accordance with its specifications, and only for the capacity authorized by IBM and acquired by the customer. You can obtain the agreement from the License Agreement for Machine Code and Licensed Internal Code website.

Access to Machine Code updates is conditioned on entitlement and license validation in accordance with IBM policy and practice. IBM may verify entitlement through customer number, serial number, electronic restrictions, or any other means or methods employed by IBM in its discretion.

You may also obtain updated code by contacting your IBM representative.

If the machine does not function as warranted and your problem can be resolved through your application of downloadable Machine Code, you are responsible for downloading and installing these designated Machine Code changes as IBM specifies. If you would prefer, you may request IBM to install downloadable Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

Educational allowance A reduced charge is available to qualified education customers. The educational allowance may not be added to any other discount or allowance.

The educational allowance is 15% for the products in this announcement.
