We would like to thank all the people that have been a part of the Madamfo Ghana projects. Thank you for joining us, and thank you for supporting our ambitious vision of creating a better world - ‘A world without poverty, where everyone can satisfy their basic needs.‘

We are delighted to see that we make a difference in this world - year for year, project for project, together with our partners, sponsors, patrons and supporters. Our sustainable projects provide access to health care, water, sanitary facilities, education, food and other basic needs for thousands of people.

But, there is still a lot of work to be done. The results, which are summarized in this report, are a testimony to our work. But, they are also a reflection of you and they honor you. All of you, who have continuously contributed your knowledge, effort and your donations to make a positive change in this world.

Bettina Landgrafe Victor Kwaku Manu 1st chairwoman and Managing Director CEO Madamfo Ghana e.V. Madamfo Ghana Foundation 2 Who are we?

Madamfo Ghana e.V is a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Hagen, Germany; and it is a registered non-profit organisation named Madamfo Ghana Foundation based in Kumasi, Ghana.

The association was founded by Bettina Landgrafe in 2007. Jointly with her local team - in the person of Mr. Victor Kwaku Manu, CEO and the late Mr. Emmanuel S. K. Kumadey, former CEO - Madamfo Ghana carried out projects to improve the livelihoods of the Ghanaian people, to enable them to lead an independent life.

Our goal is to reduce poverty and to establish lasting changes in the lives of the most vulnerable people in Ghana. This is achieved by focussing our support on various areas, such as education, health care, hygiene, water supply, livelihoods and awareness campaigns.

To date, we have already implemented more than 90 projects, reached almost one million people with our campaigns, trained 500 young people or sent them to university, and enabled countless people to undergo surgeries or medical treatments.

3 Vision: A world without poverty, where everyone can satisfy their basic needs. Mission: Helping people to help themselves is the guiding principle of Madamfo Ghana. This is why we realise projects hand in hand with the beneficiaries. We work to alleviate suffering by committing to ensure the sustainability of every project, once it is completed, and its longterm impact on the livelihoods of the beneficiaries. Motto: Do the right thing at the right time.

In 2019, we have managed to further establish and expand our projects to improve the livelihoods and living conditions of the most deprived and vulnerable people. With the opening of a social center in Yamah, a library in Duadaso, a health care center in Kyekyewere and 4 hospitals in the , we have taken an important step towards health for all. In the field of education, several schools and kindergartens have been built, our scholarship program gives deprived children access to primary, secondary, vocational and higher education.

Thanks to our school feeding program, more than 1,100 children can go to school and get warm meals every day. In order to support and supply this program, we have successfully implemented the construction of an agricultural farm and a poultry farm.

With regard to maternal and child health, our experts will continue with their awareness campaigns in remote areas, to provide more relevant information on pregnancy, maternity, children’s health and family planning. And, eventually, thanks to our partner foundation TULISA, we were able to provide medical treatments and surgeries for children with severe health conditions.

6 Project Highlights - Education

Education is the key to an independent and self- determined life. It goes without saying that our children attend school and receive an education. For families in Ghana, sending children to school is a Kindergarten major financial effort. Most families cannot afford to send their children to school. They cannot afford the school fee, the books, or the school uniforms, which are mandatory in Ghana. Kabile Kindergarten

That is why many children turn to us and as for our help. In this case, Madamfo Ghana provides help for self-help, because a solid education is the basis for any professional career.

At Lake Volta, in Eastern Ghana, children are abused as cheap labor for fishing from early childhood. Under inhuman circumstances, they are enslaved as fishermen and thus have no chance to receive an adequate school education. The physical and emotional hardship the children have to suffer is shocking to see. If the children disobey, they are punished with beatings.

The reasons for families to sell their children are mainly poverty and too many children, that cannot be provided for. These problems have to be adressed jointly with the parents and the buyers of the children, the fishermen, who are looking for cheap labour. This is why we have launched the initiative against child trafficking in 2009.

The year 2019 was an eventful year for our children’s home, which was characterized by various activities. The partnership with the International Justice Mission (IJM) has been very successful. Both organizations work hand in hand for the well-being of the children. Child slaves that have been rescued by IJM are taken care of by Madamfo Ghana in the children’s shelter in Ho.

In 2019, all children cared for by IJM continued their schooling and education. Some of the children in the children’s home completed their secondary education and were accepted at various colleges, universities and technical colleges.

In 2019, we were able to supply the community of Yamah with additional clean drinking water, which is produced by solar mechanization, and to complete the construction of a social center. With this building, we have now provided a safe haven for 24 orphans and continue to support the most needy children with food, medical care, and education. The children’s school performance has improved and they are physically healthy, committed, and they feel safe.

New beds for the children home 13 Project Highlights - Health

In Ghana, the system of health is known as the “Cash and Go“ system in which initial payment has to be made for the treatment. If the patient has no money, he or she will not receive any treatment or only insufficient treatment. A situation which is hard for us to imagine, but which is reality here in Ghana. Our team has witnessed several situations in which even severely injured patients, whose life was in danger, did not receive the medical help they needed. Madamfo Ghana ensures that on the one hand, as many people as possible have access to qualified medical treatment. And, on the other hand, we improve the local infrastructure in the health sector by building maternity wards, hospitals and health centers. In targeted education programs, such as our Maternity Training Program, women are trained in antenatal classes and future fathers learn how a child develops in the womb. All this is done by local nursed and midwives who are familiar with the cultural background and the language of the people.

14 Project Highlights – Health (Infrastructure)

Thanks to our partner GTP Schäfer, we were able to build the first part of a new Health Center in Kyekyewere. The 16-bed ward for women and men will help to improve the health situation of the local population. The expansion of this complex, additional beds, and a clinic for reproductive child health, is planned for 2020.

18 Project Highlights - Health (Vanquisher)

In Ghana, the situation for children with limited mobility is often dramatic, since there are not enough suitable means which enable them to move easily. The mere way to school is not manageable for them. Without suitable means, these children will never get access to public infrastructure or education. Most of the time, the soil is the only place for them to stay.

For many children, a wheelchair is their only chance to participate in public life and to attend school. But, a regular two-wheeled wheelchair is hard to control on the unpaved roads in Ghana - the children would still be limited in their mobility. Our three-wheeled Vanquisher is a solution to this problem. Vanquisher means “the one that overcomes obstacles“, and that is exactly its purpose: to overcome obstacles that limit the mobility of the child.

Other aids with which the children can participate in life again and attend school are special walking aids, for example. But also medical care, proper diet and further therapeutic approaches are part of this project.

20 Project Highlights - WaSH

Access to safe and sufficient drinking water is quite a challenge in many places. Since there is no clean and safe drinking water in the Municipalities, the people are forced to rely on the water supply of rivers and lakes - which lead to water born diseases. Due to our WaSH-Projects, the beneficiaries have access to sufficient water over the entire year for drinking, cooking, and for personal and domestic use. These projects are of great benefit, especially for women and children, because in Ghana, fetching water is considered their responsibility. In 2019, we enabled almost 40,000 people to gain access to clean drinking water.

Chronic malnutrition, which causes many diseases, is a significant problem in Ghana. The children are weakened. For them - diseases from which a healthy child could recover easily - are fatal. Madamfo Ghana has started a feeding program for nursery schools and primary schools in the Bosome Freso District and in the Tain District. The school feeding program has improved a lot for the pupils, the parents, and the schools:

• Improvement of the performance at school: the feeding program has helped the pupils to concentrate, which has had a positive influence on their performance.

• Improvement of school attendance: the feeding program has greatly reduced the rate of absenteeism in class. Thanks to the program, the number of pupils at Lake Bosomtwi has increased from 274 to 582.

• Good health and well-being: this program has had a positive impact on the general health and the well-being of the children. The well-balanced diet provided by schools acts as preventive measure against diet-related diseases such as malnutrition and anemia.

We grow maize, manioc, plantains and beans, for example, and we use the harvest to support our various programs.

The first growing season began in April 2019. In September 2019, we were already able to harvest 75kg of beans, and 450kg of maize. And from the second season, we had a harvest yield of 330 kg of maize, in February 2020.

29 Outlook for 2020

Our reach and impact on communities has increased as we have grown. At the same time, the organization has remained small and intends to remain small, in order to maintain the personal engagement in the communities - which has become the hallmark of Madamfo Ghana. In 2020, we will celebrate our 20th anniversary.

We have planned many projects for 2020, and we hope that you will accompany and support us on our way towards their realization. You will find some examples on the following pages.

30 Sowing seeds for the future

A point of emphasis is the reforestation of the northern savanna of Ghana. With a manageable budget, this plan can help to stop desertification and rural exodus. It will improve livelihoods, implement education and health related services, and improve local environmental conditions. For that purpose, our Christmas 2019 fundraising campaign has focused on reforestation, with the goal of planting more than 50,000 trees.

31 32 Emergency aid for the porter women in Kumasi “Kayayei“

Another point of emphasis is the improvement of the precarious, dangerous and inhuman situation of the most vulnerable Kayayei in Kumasi. These young girls are exploited as porters and live under the most degrading conditions in the slums of the city. Our project includes measures to improve their access to basic medical care, to contraception of unwanted pregnancies as a result of prostitution or rape; measures to create alternatives such as vocational training, counseling, affordable housing, search for family members and supported family reunifications.

There are several settlements with a total of ca. 3,000 inhabitants in the catchment area. However, Odumkrom is cut off by a river from Ochiso, the main village with all the important public offices, markets, clinics, and schools. There is no bridge to cross the river, which is why the locals habe to use canoes. But that is very dangerous because of strong currents and the unsafe boats - moreover, most people cannot swim. Regularly, people die trying to cross it - both, adults and children. Many families do not send their children to school at all, because of the danger. Especially in the rainy season, many children stay away from school. As a result, they do not only lack of access to important infrastructure, but also educational opportunities and health care.

35 Odumkrom - a pedestrian bridge secures the future

36 Odumkrom - a pedestrian bridge secures the future

Madamfo Ghana wants to improve the situation for the inhabitants of Odumkrom - especially for the children - and to make the crossing the river safe. For this purpose, we want to build a pedestrian bridge, which connects the villages with the main village.

• Prevention of casualties when crossing the river • Facilitation of school attendance for the children and thus • Less dropouts • Decrease of teenage pregnancies • Prevention of drug abuse amongst young people • Better health care by access to the clinic • Reducing poverty due to improved economic availability • Realisation of the sustainable development of the region.

The construction of the pedestrian bridge will be realized in close cooperation with the local population and the local companies - starting with conceptualisation and planning, until completion and maintenance.

37 Abease - Primary school construction and WaSH-Project

Project Location Details Beneficiaries Duration Budget €

Primary school and WaSH Bono Region Construction of a primary school with 200 pupils, 10 2020 97,136.06 Abease toilets and water supply teachers The school building of the SDA Basic School in Abease, with currently 200 pupils between the age of 6 and 12, and 10 teachers, is crumbling and in danger of collapsing, so that the lessons usually have to take place outside. Furthermore, in the morning, the children fetch water from a creek which is 3km away.

As a result, they often miss class. Due to the polluted water, severe water born diseases are spreading. There are no hygienic toilet facilites, so that the children have to relieve themselves in the open. This is a problem, especially for the young girls. Since there is no privacy, they stay away from school during their period. These circumstances lead to a high number of dropouts. Often, teenage pregnancies and low living standards are the results.

By constructing a new school building, with 6 fully equipped classrooms, a staff room, an office and a storage room, mechanized water supply and a toilet house, we want to end these untenable conditions, and create an appropriate and decent learning environment for the pupils and the teachers. 38 X Dama - Primary school construction and WaSH-Project

Project Location Details Beneficiaries Duration Budget €

Primary school and WaSH Bono Region Construction of a primary school with 326 pupils, 8 2020 66,051.33 Dama Nkwanta toilets and water supply teachers

The Dama Nkwanta primary school is run outdoors under an improvised thatched roof. Goats run through the learning area and foul it. Under these circumstances, effective learning is not possible for the 326 students.

There is no well and no toilet. In the morning, the children have to fetch drinking water from the Pru River, which is 3km away. As a result, they usually miss the first hours of class. All of them have to relieve themselves in the open. Due to these circumstances, absenteeism is very high.

By constructing a new school building with 6 classrooms, a school toilet and self-sufficient water supply for the school, we want to reduce water-born diseases and thus absenteeism, and enable all children to attend school regularly and learn under appropriate circumstances.

This temporary outdoor latrine serves as a toilet.

39 Ampaha - Primary school construction and WaSH-Project

Project Location Details Beneficiaries Duration Budget €

Primary school and WaSH Ashanti Region Construction of a primary school with 500 2020 60,000 Ampaha toilets and water supply

In Ampaha, the approximately 500 pupils have to study in a temporary shed. Due to the leaking roof, lessons cannot take place when it rains. There is also no toilet that ensures a little bit of privacy, which is why girls stay away from school during their period.

As a result of the lack of education, teenage pregnancies are increasing dramatically in this region.

The project will start here specifically and lead to a solution of the problem mentioned above: In addition to the construction of a new school building with hygienic toilets and its own water supply, in the future, training courses for mothers and families will also be held here, as part of awareness and information campaigns (malaria prevention, infant and child mortality, maternal mortality , prevention of teenage pregnancies, hygiene). 40 In 2019, we had again the great privilege Our team, of working with many exceptional individuals, organizations, and companies. patrons and We would like to thank all of you for your engagement, your support and your partners solidarity.
