The 20th Annual Gala Celebration to benefit Mercy Housing and Shelter

Marriott Hartford Downtown Saturday, November 8, 2014

Together, We are the Key to Ending Homelessness Welcome

elcome to Mercy Housing and Shelter’s 20th Annual Dreams WCan Come True Gala. Tonight we are here to celebrate Mercy’s commitment to the community as an organization dedicated to ending homelessness. Mercy Housing and Shelter works to empower its clients to become independent so they can live and work with dignity and respect. Mercy welcomes and serves all in need in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy who founded the organization in 1983.

We would like to thank our Honorary Chairs, Geno Auriemma and Kevin Ollie for supporting Mercy and our efforts to end homelessness. Sadly, they could not be here with us tonight, but they have graciously sent a video message that you will see during this evenings program.

We are grateful to you and to all of our sponsors this evening, without whose generous support we would not be able to raise these critical funds to keep our programs operating. We are honored to have VOYA Financial as our Presenting Sponsor this year along with Leader Sponsors: Bank of America and Siracusa Moving and Storage; Reception Sponsor: Vertex; Partner Sponsors: All American Waste, HCC Global Financial, Reid and Riege, and Travelers; Printing Sponsor: Service Press; and Sweet Finale Sponsor: Strategic Staffing Solutions.

Please continue your tradition of generosity through active bidding at both our Silent and Live Auctions. You have created a momentum for this organization in both the public and private sector that is allowing us to bring homelessness to an end.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our dedicated Board of Trustees, Staff, Funders, Volunteers, and Partner Agencies, all of whom make this important work possible.

You are investing in people’s future. Together we are the key to ending homelessness.

Thank you for being with us tonight. Have a wonderful time!

Geno Auriemma Geno Auriemma has redefined the meaning of success in women’s college in his 29 years as head coach of the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Team. During his illustrious tenure, Auriemma has transformed the UConn program into the standard that all others are measured, both on and off the court. Under his guidance, the Huskies have been transformed from a program with only one winning season, to its current state, which includes nine national titles, 15 Final Fours, five perfect seasons and 39 Conference titles, all since Auriemma’s arrival in 1985. On the court, his success includes nine national championships, including a record 90-game winning streak and a spotless 40-0 mark during the 2013-14 campaign. Off the court, success means a flawless, 100 percent graduation rate among four-year players and one of the most beloved and followed sports teams in the country. This unmatched success, which is the standard for collegiate programs nationally, was recognized with Auriemma’s induction into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition, Auriemma recently agreed to serve a second, four year term as head coach of the U.S. National Team. During his tenure as head coach, Auriemma has led the U.S. National Team to win a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and in October of this year the team, which included several former Huskies, took home their second world championship gold medal as their head coach. He is the first coach in women’s basketball history to guide a team to five consecutive Final Four appearances on two separate occasions and the current run of seven-consecutive Final Four appearances is also a record. Auriemma is a seven-time national Coach-Of-The-Year and has been named the Conference coach-of-the-year 11 times. In all Auriemma has garnered a combined total of 24 National Coach of the Year honors. His 29-year overall record stands at 879-133 (.869), by far the best winning percentage among active Division I coaches and he became only the sixth coach all-time to eclipse the 800-win mark on the same night he led the Huskies to a fifth-straight BIG EAST Tournament Championship on March 6, 2012. Auriemma reached win number 800 in fewer games than any coach in the history of the game. Geno Auriemma and his wife Kathy reside in Manchester. They three children and two grandchildren.

Kevin Ollie On September 13, 20012 Kevin Ollie was named the 18th head coach of the University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball Team, accepting a huge responsibility as he replaced legendary Hall of Fame coach . With only two seasons of coaching experience after joining Calhoun's staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportunity to lead the storied UConn program. It took Kevin Ollie just 70 games as a collegiate head basketball coach to join the elite of the profession – those who have won an NCAA championship. It would have been a dream season for any college coach, but for a coach of just 70 games, whose team was not even able to compete in the 2013 NCAA Tournament because of academic shortcomings of years long past, it was truly remarkable. With a sparkling 52-18 coaching record, Ollie’s .743 winning percentage is the highest of any coach in UConn history who coached more than 20 games. The 32-victory season is the ninth 30-win season for the Huskies. Ollie’s UConn history, which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career - has come full circle. “This is my dream job. I was made for this job," Ollie said on the day he was hired. “UConn is a special, special place and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but right here.” During his NBA career Ollie earned a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the . Ollie had been brought to Cleveland to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional and Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for . During his NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach. Born in , and raised in Los Angeles, Kevin Ollie resides in Glastonbury with his wife Stephanie. They have two children; a son and a daughter.

Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, a former x-ray technician, is Connecticut’s 108th Lieutenant Governor. She began a career in public service more than 30 years ago when she successfully sought a seat on the Tolland Board of Education. After serving for eight years on the BOE, Wyman was elected to four terms in House of Representatives where she held leadership positions on committees of cognizance for education. In 1994, she was the first woman ever elected State Comptroller. For 16 years, she advocated on behalf of taxpayers for fiscal responsibility and accountability. Since 2010 when they were elected, Lieutenant Governor Wyman has been a true partner to Governor Dannel P. Malloy in the work to bolster statewide economic recovery and build a strong foundation for growth, long-term stability and prosperity. She is the Chair of the Board of Access Health CT, the state’s nationally-recognized health insurance exchange, and chairs the board of the Interagency Council for Ending the Achievement Gap. One of her highest priorities is the welfare of Connecticut’s military, veterans, and their families. In 2007 as Comptroller, she spearheaded the effort to establish Connecticut’s Wall of Honor, a tribute at the State Capitol that honors the military men and women who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. She chairs the Rocky Hill Veterans Home advisory group, a team convened by Governor Malloy to strengthen supports and services for at-risk veterans. She works closely with the Connecticut National Guard on their programs as well. Lt. 16 / MERCY Housing and Shelter Corporation Letting go of the Shame and Guilt

Tracy currently resides in Mercy’s Two Year Transitional Living Program My name is Tracy, and I have been homeless for the past four years. On April 1st of this year I arrived at St. Elizabeth House and was accepted into the two year Transitional Living Program. I had been sober for 23 months, and I was finally ready to allow them to help me. I am a proud mother of two young men. Considering the way I led my life, they could have totally went in the same direction as me. But I couldn’t be any prouder. My youngest son is 20 years old and is in the Army, stationed in New York. My oldest son, now 24 years old, lives locally. Both of my sons have told me how proud they are of me. There was a period of time during my addiction when my sons were very angry with me and disgusted with the bad choices I had made. It makes me sad to think of the time I missed during their teenage years. I wish I could turn back the clock, but I can’t. It has taken me a long time to finally say that I am not ashamed of what I have gone through. Mercy has helped me overcome the shame and the guilt of my actions. I’ve learned that once I could forgive myself, it was easier to move on. Today, I have been sober for 27 months. I’ve taken full advantage of all of the programs Mercy has offered to me. Mercy has helped me to understand that it’s about making changes. They have taught me how to cope with life and have given me the tools to do that. I know now that there will always be hard times, but I need to have my tool box ready. I need to know who I can call and what I need to do to get through those difficult times. My goal now is to get permanent housing. Knowing that I have two years gives me the time to get myself ready. I’ve been taking a budgeting class and learning how to set financial goals. My financial goals are to save enough money to buy the things I will need for my home. Mercy has helped to guide me, when I couldn’t guide myself. I hope that more people, who have similar stories, can open their hearts to make changes in their lives, the way Mercy has helped me.
