Today's Coach Walks starting points: A: Glenridding B+: Glenridding B: A592 C: Glenridding

Grade : A Distance 7.6 miles / 12.2 km Leader: Colin Manning via the Edges Climbing 3,208 ft / 978 m Today's walk is a classic and my personal favourite. From Glenridding we head up past Gillside and on up alongside Mires Beck to Birkhouse Moor (2355ft/718m). From here we continue along the top to reach Hole-in-the-wall. This marks the start of Striding Edge, a narrow ridge with long steep drops on each side. Whilst not as narrow or as difficult as some ridges it demands plenty of re- spect. There is prolonged scrambling and exposure and a head for heights is needed. There is plenty of time to navigate the Edge with easier options in places and it's always well worth the effort. After the steep final scramble we reach the summit of Helvellyn (3113ft/949m). Our descent takes us down Swirrel Edge, a much shorter and less exposed edge, but care should still be taken. Our final summit is Catstye Cam which is a short climb up to a pointed summit. A grassy descent from here brings us on to a well laid path back down alongside Birkhouse Moor into Glenridding.

Note: Large parts of this walk are weather dependent and an alternative route up Helvellyn via Whit- side Bank and descending via Dollywagon Pike will be used in the event of extreme weather.

Grade : B+ Distance 13 miles/ 20.9 km Leader: Val Walmsley Place & Hallin Fell Climbing 2900 ft/ 884 m

Leaving Glenridding we head for Patterdale where we take a path going up to Boredale Hause. From here we then go north to summit of Place Fell. Continuing north then north east we reach Bridge End, before turning east to pass Hallin Bank and Hause Farm. From here we take a path up to Hallin Fell obelisk & lovely views of the Lake. We return by way of Sandwick to pick up a lakeside path after passing Scalehow Wood. We now follow this path all way back to Patterdale & Glenridding. Have a great day.

Grade : B Distance 9 miles/ 14.5 km Leaders: Tony Ingham Gowbarrow & Aira Force Climbing 1500 ft/ 457 m

This is a linear walk finishing in Glenridding. We leave the coach on the A592 and walk northwards for half a mile on a minor road to Bennethead. Here we turn west across fields to reach fell country. We continue west on rough paths and through Swinburn's Park Plantation to reach a derelict shooting lodge at the foot of . We climb the remaining 500 ft to the top of this Wainwright (1579ft) and descend back to the shooting lodge. The direction is then south to Yew Crag where we switch west again to eventually arrive at Aira Force where there are toilets, ice cream, drinks etc. available. The remaining 3 miles of the walk takes us through Glencoyne Park to a permissive path following the road southwards into Glenridding.

Grade : C Lanty's Tarn & Grisedale Valley Distance 6 miles / 9.65 km Leader: Alison & Lesley Climbing 492 ft / 150 m

Today we begin our walk from the centre of Glenridding, (toilets available 20p required). Heading south-west towards Westside, we then begin a slow climb up to Lanty’s Tarn. This is our major climb of the day and if the weather is fine we should be rewarded with pleasant views of the area. From here we continue south-west following the footpath along the valley side with Grisedale Beck below us, on our left. As we walk along this path the surrounding mountains include Striding Edge and Dol- lywaggon Pike. As many of you know Glenridding was badly affected by the earlier floods and the bridge over the Beck, which we had intended to cross, has been damaged. If it is still closed, we will retrace our steps back along the valley and take the path south-east to cross the bridge near Thornhow. Turning left we follow a small road down towards Patterdale, where we then meet the A592 and turn left again taking us back into Glenridding.

Please remove muddy boots before boarding the coach & check. that you take all your belongings with you. Thank you.
