ZANDSPRUIT URBAN DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK 2020

b. Distributor road construction

Only one distributor road remains to be constructed within the vicinity of the Study Area: the K56. The K56 will be located near the western boundary of Zandspruit and will provide a needed east-west linkage that will link to Kyalami, to to Cosmo City and to . This road is considered vital to unlock the development potential of the northern parts of . The development of this road will enable the construction of a proposed BRT route that could link the abovementioned areas.

c. Collector road construction

A collector road network is proposed the will stretch from Malibongwe Drive, north of , along Aureol Road through the North Riding Agricultural Holdings, and along the southern boundary of Cosmo City, to connect to Beyers Naude Drive west of the Study Area boundary. This collector road will contain the proposed BRT route on Aureol Road, which will be a westward extension of the Phase 1 BRT route terminating at the CBD. This proposed road is critical to unlocking the development potential of Zandspruit and creating a sustainable and livable urban environment in the Zandspruit region. This road will be a dual carriageway, with one of its two lanes functioning as a dedicated BRT lane. This proposed collector road/ BRT route will require a 30m reserve. It is therefore strongly proposed that a 30m road reserve be protected along Aureol Road and along the southern boundary of Cosmo City. All township establishments approved that are affected by this alignment must protect this reserve in the township layout as part of and subject to the township approval process. Also, it is recommended that the Municipality prepares basic design plans for the proposed collector road/ BRT route at an early stage. Such a design will result in a road reserve that is specifically designed to accommodate the mentioned transportation infrastructure, thus ensuring the optimal use of land along this route.

Basic design plans have been drafted for the design for the freeways and distributor roads planned for the Zandspruit Region. Consequently, the road reserves have been established and are required to be incorporated in the layout plans of township establishment applications. This requirement is enforced by the Provincial government, who is responsible for the PWV road network (PWV and K-routes) implementation. In addition, the section of Malibongwe Drive between Northgate and the Randburg CBD is a proposed BRT route. This BRT route needs to be incorporated in the design of this distributor road. It is recommended that the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality consults the Province with regard to this matter, to ensure that the BRT network design is incorporated into the distributor road design at the appropriate stage.
