Community Link 100 Pentyrch Fireworks Display 2017 This is the 100th issue of the Community Link since it was started way back in 1977. The principle of the Community Link was very well expressed by the first editor, Ken Gill, in his editorial in the first Community Link. “This publication is to give you an insight into our local past, a knowledge of your locality and its present events, what is due to happen and what is being considered”. Those principles are still apply. The magazine is produced by the Community Council to keep you informed and in keeping with it’s title to provide a Link for everyone with all those clubs and societies that help make our villages into Communities. The delicacy of that language seemed so poignant in the light of the horror that was being faced in the trenches of Flanders at the same time. Some commentators suggest the Great War was the moment when our nation lost its innocence. A hundred years later we use much grittier and direct ways of getting our message across but it doesn’t necessarily follow that we have lost or forgotten those fundamental positive principles which have long characterised our society. In recent months I have witnessed tremendous acts of hospitality and generosity within our Community from individuals and groups alike as well as a genuine desire to serve others and ‘put something back’. As we reflect on the anniversary of the Link this seems as good a time as any to encourage one another to avoid cynicism and instead rejoice in the simple goodness that continues to be evident in our villages.

BRITISH OUTDOOR SLALOM CHAMPION In September, Ffion Lewis, Class 6, Creigiau Primary School travelled to Edinburgh to compete in the British Outdoor Slalom Championships. Ffion fought off some tough competition and after three runs on a very long and steep slope Ffion was announced as the Under 12 female champion. Our presentation evening was made extra special by the presence of a number of past leaders of Guiding in Pentyrch, three of whom had been my leaders [and one of whom is now over 90 years of age!!]. There were children as young as 6 and as old as 14 taking part. Once back at the club there was a drink and chocolate bar for each to reward their efforts. Everyone had a fantastic time. Race Night: On Saturday 21st October the Club held a Race Night at the Rugby Club which was a huge success. What a fabulous night it was. There was a delicious curry cooked by Sue, lovely bar staff kept the drinks flowing and we had a full room with a great turnout from our Senior team and lots of parents from across the age groups. Keith our ‘Race Night man’ ensured a professionally run event. It was such a good night out! 100 Club: The first draw for the Pentyrch Rangers 100 Club is on Saturday 25th November. 14 CANTORION CREIGIAU NEWS Do you enjoy singing? If yes, come and join Cantorion Creigiau, your local mixed voice choir. New members of any voice or age are welcome to joins us, you do not have to be able to read music, we learn together at rehearsals. We meet in Creigiau Golf Club Sundays 7.30pm-9.00pm in the room upstairs, then we socialise in the bar downstairs. We perform a variety of concerts both for enjoyment by the choir and audience and to raise money for charity. Gwaelod-y-Garth WI Seven members of our WI had a great time during their recent 8 day holiday to sunny Jersey visiting many places of interest particularly the Jersey War Tunnels, the famous Pearl Centre, various castles, Rene Laliques glass church displaying glasswork commissioned by Lady Trent in memory of her husband Jesse Boot of Boots the Chemist fame Four WI members took part in the annual Glamorgan Federation Quiz on an extremely wet and windy visit to the Hi Tide Restaurant in Porthcawl. We didn't win unfortunately but there again we didn't disgrace ourselves. Another enjoyable evening was spent at a Samantha B Fashion Show in Morganstown Village Hall organised by Treforgan WI. Members continue with visits to Gwaelod-y-Garth Primary School teaching cookery, sewing and knitting to pupils on Friday afternoons. We are also involved in knitting hats and vests for the African "fish and chip" babies and hats and scarves for the charity Operation Christmas Child. Last but not least we are busy practicing in preparation for the GFWI darts competition next February, but the "double to win" continues to cause a problem!!! On Saturday night, 29 October, a minibus was hired to take 14 of our members to our President's cottage which was beautifully decorated for a Halloween style Wine Tasting evening where we had to guess the contents from 17 varieties of homemade wines. Everyone who attended (most in fancy dress) brought a plate of food which did manage to soak up the alcohol. After such a fun evening we all managed to return home "happy but sober"! Among the numerous ancient artefacts discovered locally over recent years this Iron-Age item stands out as being truly special. It is a tenet measuring about six inches in diameter. In its day it would have been fixed to an Ancient British chariot and functioned as a loop through which the reins were passed. It was dislodged in 1965 at Steetley Quarry on the Lesser Garth by earth-moving equipment driven by Mr Alfred Burke who wisely passed it on to Mr Lewis Edwards the manager. It was delivered by Mr Edwards' daughter to the National Museum for assessment and the curator Dr H.N. Savory quickly confirmed the importance of the find, describing it as the finest example of its kind ever discovered in modern times. 26 Coed y Bedw Coed Y Bedw, to the north of Heol Goch Road, is one of The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales’ (WTSWW) finest nature reserves and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is an ancient broadleaved woodland, spread across both acidic and calcareous soils. It consists of various woodland types ranging from dry beech woodland to wet alder carr. Beneath the canopy, there is a diverse assemblage of shrubs and flowers, many of which are ancient woodland indicators such as spindle, ramsons (or wild garlic) and bluebells. This diversity of habitats supports a wide array of invertebrates (including the uncommon giant lacewing) and woodland birds. His articles of the local history have always been almost addictive. Once you start to read them you have to read on to the end and then want for more. Even though all the past copies of Community Link are not yet on our website I would highly recommend you to the earliest copies that are on there. Not only did Don write the most interesting articles about the history of the area but his articles based on his tape recording of old Pentyrch residents are real treasures from the past. Don has always been a fountain of knowledge about this community in fact you could almost refer to him as the Encyclopedia Llewellyn. Far better than any Britanica or Wikipedia! When the Community Council decided to produce a “Centenary Link” to mark the 100 years of the Parish (then Community) council there was no one other we could turn to but to Don. He contributed almost all the articles, carefully typed out, as well as the photographs to accompany them. As founder of the Pentyrch History Society it was Don and his colleagues who provided the drive to complete our museum again giving up many hours of their free time and expertise. It was Don who provided all the photographs for the panels around the room.
