  • 2012 State of the Institute Report
2012 STATE OF THE INSTITUTE REPORT “If a disease were killing our children in the proportions that injuries are, people would be outraged and demand that this killer be stopped.” – Statement by Surgeon General C. Everett Koop before the Subcommittee on Children, Family, Drugs and Alcoholism, U.S. Senate, February 9, 1989 9,523 from Trauma Annual Deaths for Children Ages 1 – 18* 599 952 1,700 from Heart from Birth from Cancer Disease Defects * Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s data for the U.S. in 2010. 2 CHILDRESS INSTITUTE FOR PEDIATRIC TRAUMA From the Executive Director Since we launched the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma (CIPT), we have seen the positive impact that we can make toward helping seriously injured children recover to lead more normal lives. As we look back on our accomplishments in 2012, we are proud of our progress. We made significant advances toward our overall goal of saving the lives of injured children by funding research and medical education, as well as raising awareness about pediatric trauma. It is an honor to have the opportunity to highlight many of these accomplishments in this annual report. A significant milestone for CIPT was moving into our new national headquarters at Wake Forest Biotech Place in downtown Winston-Salem, N.C. A facility dedicated to J. Wayne Meredith, MD research, Biotech Place is also home to the investigators who conducted the KIDS head trauma study, without a doubt the most important research we funded in 2012. CIPT hosted several events at our new facility, including our annual fundraiser and the 3rd Annual Brenner Children’s Hospital Pediatric Trauma Conference, both of which impacted medical education programs for first responders, nurses and doctors.
