Silvered dial with Arabic numeral hour markers, subsidiary recorder dials to three, six and nine, bordered by a telemetric scale. Stainless steel case fitted to an unsigned black leather strap with stainless steel pin buckle. 34mm. The name on the dial of this watch seems to be missing its first half, given that it is all but identical to the Jaeger-LeCoultre example of the same reference. The ‘LeCoultre’ name indicates that the watch was made for the US market, although the exact details are a little complex and open to much misinterpretation. To avoid US import tariffs that were imposed from 1930, watches were imported to be cased up locally. The company responsible for distribution in the USA was Longines-Wittnauer who also distributed Vacheron Constantin and LeCoultre was the trading name that was chosen by them. Confusion comes from the fact that LECOULTRE - a gentleman’s bracelet dials exist in the US with both the LeCoultre name and the JLC logo as well as watch. Numbers rubbed. ROLEX - a gentleman’s Oyster chronograph bracelet watch. Reference 3525, serial 133943. Signed manual wind movement. Champagne dial with baton hour markers, Arabic numeral twelve and six, subsidiary recorder dials to three and nine. Stainless steel case fitted to an unsigned stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp. 35mm. The Rolex Oyster Chronograph reference 3525 has become something of a legend due to its supply, by Rolex, to Allied prisoners of war and its subsequent use in daring escape attempts. Not all Oyster chronographs from the war years were used for timing guard patrols and searchlight sweeps. On the other side of the world other owners were using them as originally intended as technical tool watches. This watch was bought in Buenos Aires and given as a wedding present in 1941 to a civil engineer working on the British-owned railways of Argentina. The neutral position of Argentina until the last months of WWII meant that the tachometer and telemetry scales would be put to more mundane but no less crucial uses. The watch is in carefully used, completely unrestored condition and houses the manual wind Valjoux calibre 23. £12,000-18,000
