WESSEX LEAGUE CUP GAME 3rd ROUND

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

Welcome to Blackfield & Langley Football club

Good evening and welcome to Gang Warily for our encounter versus Andover Town FC in the Wessex League Cup.

We extend a warm welcome to the players and supporters of Andover Town FC including the Match Officials, Referee Harry Redman and Assistants Patrick McGonigle and Mark Pepin.

Andover Town FC are currently sat third in the Wessex Division 1 league with 4 wins, 3 draws and only 1 defeat, 8 games in but looking strong so far.

Blackfield & Langley had a disappointing last-minute goal against them against Horndean FC last Saturday, they players will no doubt come out strong tonight to regain their honour.

Our next game is at home to Alresford Town, again a game we should have won if not for a lucky deflection ending the Last fixture 1-1.

We wish all in attendance this evening an enjoyable match and a safe journey home.

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1935 After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the Club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the League and made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to compete against the best in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams and the enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to this day. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club’s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1 the club were relegated to the new Division 2 in 2004. The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. 7 BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935)

The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of . Jon continued for a 2nd season finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the team eventually finishing in 14th position and 16th in the subsequent season. The Club had in incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Hastings United, and reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager’s role mid-way through the season, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team who started off brightly but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn’t quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5th in the league and were Russell Cotes Cup winners. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup, losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent, made it to the 3rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup. After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club surpassed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18, winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town and benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 Leagues, gaining promotion for the first time to the Southern League. Season 2017/18 also saw two appearances at St Marys in both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the record in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32 but eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a midweek replay. Success continued in 2018/19 with the Club winning Southern League South Division One and narrowly losing in the semi final of the Southern League Cup. Success on the field of play together with hard work behind the scenes in connection with Ground Grading requirements has enabled another piece of Club history to be created with promotion to the Southern League South Premier Division. Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.

Andover Town FC – History of Town

Andover Town Football Club was formed in 2013 by Andover and Sparsholt Colleges. Its aim was to return football to the Portway Stadium, by providing A teaching and coaching venue for the Andover College Football Academy A playing venue for the Southampton (Sparsholt) Second Chance Academy programme A senior Football side which would provide an opportunity for talented academy players to further develop within an adult setting, whilst providing further opportunities for local players to play at the highest possible level A pathway for young people from 6-19 which enables them to identify both playing and studying opportunities within Andover

The club finally moved into the stadium in December 2013 and, after an abortive start due to the weather, played its first competitive game in the newly refurbished Portway Stadium beating Team Solent 4-0 in front of a crowd of 161. Success in our first year was beyond that we could have hoped for, including witnessing a crowd of over 300 for our early March fixture with Andover Lions in the Andover Open Cup. In addition, a number of Sparsholt Saints Academy scholars appeared within the Andover Town Senior side over the last few years with Adam Grange following in the footsteps of Charlie Gunson, becoming Andover Town’s second player to represent England at an international level. Andover enjoyed their most successful yer since their formation in 2017/18. The new season opened with a 6-1 home league win against Bemerton Heath Harlequins. The club then progressed on an unbeaten run in the league of 16 games, finally losing 3-0 at Alresford Town on 8th November. Whilst their cup encounters didn't fare as well - after two wins in the F.A. Cup, including beating Southern League, Wimborne Town after a replay, before losing at home to Cadbury Heath from Bristol. Then a quick exit from the F.A.Vase losing to Horndean after extra time. Half way through the season after 21 games, the club were riding high at the top of the table. By the end of the season with two matches left, the club clinched promotion to the Southern League West division, for the first time in their short history. The season also saw us achieve the most goals scored (116) since our formation in 2013 and the most points in a season (99) plus of course the highest ever finish as runners up (second place) in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league.

The club won the final of the Russell Cotes Cup beating AFC Stoneham 1-0 The club won "Club of the Month" twice during the season - August & October 2017 Another success for the 2017 / 18 season, for the second year in succession, our Portway groundsman Chris White has been nominated for the National FA Groundsman of the Year awards, representing the entire Wessex League (i.e. best Wessex League groundsman) and, of course Andover Town Football Club.

Sadly, although finishing in second place and the chance of promotion to the Southern League, the directors had no alternative but to reject promotion. This caused the F.A. to demote the club to level 6 in the football pyramid, back to the Sydenhams Wessex First Division. Whilst disappointing, it has provided us with a great chance of developing a side around young, talented players with a connection to the area and forge strong links with the talented academy players at Andover and Sparsholt College. The loss of playing staff and the management team meant 2018/19 was built around trying to establish the foundations for future success. A difficult year resulted in Andover finishing second from bottom but progressing to the semi-finals of the Andover Open Cup. Further changes during the summer with the introduction of some new faces on the field has provided renewed optimism that the club will be on the rise again very soon.

BLACKFIELD AND LANGLEY FOOTBALL CLUB (Est.1935) BLFC GROUND HISTORY

GANG WARILY

The above is a Replica of an instrument of war used in 1314 at the battle of Bannockburn. These four-pointed spikes were called ‘Calthrops’ and were screwed on the ground to cripple the horses of the invading English Calvary, when the calthrops fell to the ground they presented a lethal point facing upwards causing havoc by piercing the hooves of the horses.

Some years later the clan Drummond were allowed, as a reward for their services to Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, to include calthrops in their coat of arms. When completed, what better than: “GANG WARILY” (Go carefully)

In 1772 member of the clan Drummond came south to Hampshire, part of this land was purchased by a petroleum company, splitting up one of the Drummonds farms. Because of this division the area had to have a new name and so it was called Gang Warily,

Many years later a part of this property was leased for ground extraction, when this was worked out the mayor of Cadland sold the old site to Fawley Parish Council to Initially prevent industrial development in the centre of the Parish. The council arranged for infilling and landscaping part of the deep excavation, later selling off the adjacent land now known as Priestcroft to pay for the project.

Gang Warily Recreation and Community Centre was built and opened to the public by Fawley Parish Council in 1986.
