Band: We Came As Romans (USA) Genre: Metalcore Label: Spinefarm Records Album Titel: We Came As Romans Spielzeit: 33:38 VÖ: 24.07.2015 Deutschland, 30 Grad und ein freier Tag, was bietet sich da mehr an als es sich in der Hängematte gemütlich zu machen und einen Long Player von We Came As Romans anzuhören. Die Band stammt aus Troy Michigan (USA) und im Juli kommt ihr viertes Album auf den Markt. Wieder eine Metalcore Band aus Amerika, bei der sich der ein oder andere die Frage stellt: "Braucht man das"? Klar, viel Neues hat auch diese Formation nicht, aber sie klingen frisch und verstehen es den Hörer zu fesseln. Ihr letztes Album "What We've Grown To Be", welches 2011 erschien, schaffte es auf Platz 20 der US-Billboard Charts. Das neue, selbst betitelte Album, wurde von David Benneth, der auch schon mit Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore und Of Mice And Men gearbeitet hat, aufgenommen und soll nun daran anknüpfen. Schon die ersten Töne des Openers, "Regenerate", sind eine positive Überraschung; da wird Grooviger Beat gepaart mit aggressivem und cleanen Gesängen geboten; womit der erste Kracher fertig ist und man denkt WOW; das war so nicht zu erwarten. Die Amis spielen Metalcore vom feinsten und hier und da erinnert mich das Ganze an Papa Roach meats Soilwork bzw. In Flames. Die zwei Sänger, David Stephens und Kyle Pavone, wechseln gekonnt zwischen Screams und cleanen Gesang. Beide verstehen es ihre Stimme so einzusetzen, dass es zum Song und zur Atmosphäre passt, egal ob gefühlvolle Passagen, wie bei "Memories", oder das aggressive Brüllen, wie bei "Regenerate", es passt einfach zu hundert Prozent. -

An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 4 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting An exploration of Christian cross-over music can provide an objective framework for evaluating songs and developing guidelines for Christian songwriters so they can enhance their effectiveness in communicating with their audiences. -

Copeland - IXORA Aaron Marsh Bryan Laurenson Jonathan Bucklew Stephen Laurenson Copeland has reunited to release their sixth album after calling it quits in 2009. Here’s what you need to know: • Copeland formed in Lakeland, Florida in 2001. The band’s first album, Beneath Medicine Tree, came out in 2003 on indie label The Militia Group. The album’s layered melodies, combined with Marsh’s thoughtful, emotive croon, immediately engaged music fans, offering a nuanced take on the emo music of the early ‘00s. The group unveiled four subsequent albums between 2005 and 2008, including Eat, Sleep, Repeat on Columbia Records in 2006. Copeland signed with Tooth & Nail in 2008 and have partnered with the label to release their long awaited sixth album, Ixora. • In their heyday, the band played over 200 shows a year. They’ve toured with Brand New, Sparta, Goo Goo Dolls, The Rentals, Bob Mould, Switchfoot, Motion City Soundtrack and Guster. Copeland has also historically supported new artists and Paramore’s first ever show was opening for Copeland in Nashville in 2004. • Copeland officially broke up in October of 2009 after nine years as a band. They wrote on their website, “We have come to an extremely difficult decision. It has come time for us to move on from Copeland and follow other paths in our lives. To put your minds at ease, we assure you this is not a bitter break up. We all individually feel Copeland has run its course in our lives and it’s time for us to pursue what is next.” The band members added, “It has been discussed and we are not ruling out the possibility of recording one more album sometime in the future.” • The band members have pursued other musical endeavors over the past few years. -

CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.
