D'Elboux Manuscripts Extracts relating to Thanet

Scope Extracts from four volumes of monumental inscriptions and heraldic material, copied & supplemented by Mr R. H. D'Elboux in the 20th century, and published by the FHS on microfiche sets 1756, 1757, 1758 & 1759. Much of the original material was collected in the 18th century by Filmer Southouse, John Thorpe, William Warren and Bryan Faussett.

Arrangement Entries are arranged alphabetically by heading. Headings give the family's surname, and (as applicable) an abode, and name of the Kent parish where the reference occurs ~ there is also a cross reference to the original on microfiche, in the format noted below. Entries are numbered, and these are used in the People and Places Indexes on page 5.

9. DENNE of Thanet - at Canterbury St Mildred (59-4-r1c09) Apra BEAKE only d. of Robert BEAKE 1 Aug 1716. • quarterly (1&4) {BEAKE}, (2) az 3 pards heads couped or {DENNE of Den Hill} (3) Arg 2 flaunches sa each charged with a pards head or {DENNE of Thanet}

10. EASON of - at Canterbury St Mildred (58-4-r3c07) Here lyeth the Body of Michael PAGE Gent. Son of Charles PAGE of this City. He married Mary, Daughter of John EASON of Ramsgate, by whom he had 4 Children; viz; Martha, Mary, Charles, and Michael. He was a Dutyfull Son, an affectionate Husband, a Tender Parent, a sincere Friend, the best of Masters, and a Lover of his Country. He was Commander of several Merchant Ships and in several Engagements, where he always acquitted Himself with Honour, and acquired a handsome Fortune. Whose Death is greatly regretted by all his Acquaintance. - He died October the 3d 1746 Aged 52 Years. • gu a fess dancetty between 3 martlets arg

He had 2 Wives; The First, Bennet GEORGE who is buried in Monkton Chancel, in the Isle of Thanet, by whom he had Issue 5 Sons and 3 Daughters; of which survived 2 Sons, and 2 Daughters, viz Edward, Thomas, Bennet, and Elis. 16. LEWIS of Mynstre in Thanet - at Crundale (58-7-r2c07) I copied it [a lost inscription] from some Papers of The Revd Mr John LEWIS, late Vicar of Mynstre, in Thanet; who copied it from The MS Papers of Filmer SOUTHOUSE.

Here lyeth Buryed, The Body of Sybell ORCHARD, Widow, late the Wife of Mr Libby ORCHARD, late of Mounckton Court, in the Isle of Thanet, deceased, which Sybell died the 12th Day of March, Anno Domini 1586.

20. PETIT of Dantdelion in Thanett - at Sibertswold (57-4-r4c10) In Memory of Anne the vertuous, discreet, religious Wife of Paule PETIT of Dantdelion in Thanett, Gent: Eldest Daughter of John MERRYWETHER of Sheepardswell Gent: She died Nov: 12 1676 Aged near 60 Years.

Here lieth The Body of Joanna, one of The Daughters of Sr Adam SPRACKLING Knight, Wife of Henry PETTIT [sic] of Dandelion in the Isle of Thanet Gentleman. 23. SANDWELL of Minster - at Herne (56-5-r5c05) Here lieth interred the Body of Richard KNOWLER of Hearne in the County of Kent, Gent and Master of Arts in Pembroke Colledge in Oxford. The 2d Son of Robert KNOWLER late of Hearne, Gent, who tooke to Wife Ann Daughter of Richard SANDWELL of Minster in the Isle of Thannet, in the same County; They had Issue 4 Sons vizt Robert, Richard, Thomas, and John; and 3 Daughters, Margaret, Anne, and Susan. He departed this Life the 20th Day of February 1659, and in the 59th Yeare of his Age. "To suffer patiently is a greater Gift, than to raise ye Dead. The Just shall live by Faith". • {KNOWLER}

24. Stonar in Thanet - at (57-2-r5c12) B[isho]p STILLINGFLEET in his Orig. Britain; and SOMNER in his Roman Ports and Forts, with some others, imagine this Place [Folkestone] to have been the Lapis Tituli of Nennius; and the Place where fought his last Battle with the ; tho' Others fix it at Stonar in Thanet - see HARRIS Hist. of Kent Fol: 124

25. TOMLIN of Updowne - at (56-6-r1c06) Here lieth The Body of Mr Hammond TWYMAN, late of Rushborne. He married Anne, Daughter of Mr Peter TOMLIN Gent: of Updowne in The Isle of Thanet : by her he left 3 Sons, and 6 Daughters. He was distinguished for his good Nature, Piety, and a Friendly generous Disposition - There hath been seldom found more good Qualities than he was possest [sic] of in one Person - obijt 29 Feb 1727 - AEtatis 61. - Near this Place lies the Body of Mr Anthony TWYMAN, who was Fellow of St John's College in Cambridge, and Master of the Revels in Ireland; Tutor to the late Lord Henchingbrooke : Sometime after to the Lord Finch, wth whom he travell'd as his Governour. After his returned he travelled with The Lord Burford, the present Duke of St Albans; Lord Nassaw Pawlet, Lord Spencer, The present Earl of Sunderland; and Oliver ST JOHN Esq through Italy, Germany, France, Holland, and Ireland; being greatly esteem'd for his Learning abroad, and admired by all that knew him at home. It pleased Almighty God, his Body here to rest and to mingle his Dust with his Ancestors. He died, 18 Sept 1722 AEtatis 42 - To The Pious Memory of My Honour'd Father and much lov'd Unkle [sic], this Monument was erected by Mr Peter TWYMAN, eldest son to Mr Hammond TWYMAN. 26. UNDERDOWNE of Birchington - at (56-5-r5c10) Here lieth The Body of Henry HILLS; he had Issue by his Wife, Catherine, Two Sons, and Two Daughters; Henry, John, Mary and Catherine. He died in Dec: 1684, Aged 62 Years.

Here lieth Interred the Body of Catharine HILLS who departed this Life the 25o of January 1696/7 aged 72 Years and odd Months. Shee had Issue by heir [sic] Husband aforesaid 2 Sons and 2 Daughters; Henry, John, Mary and Catherine : all interred near this Place. She was Daughter to Vincent UNDERDOWNE of Birchington, in the Isle of Thanett, Yeoman. Her Husband, Henry HILLS, gave to The Poor Men of Reculver The Rent of 3£ 10s a Year, payable the 24o Day of June forever.
