Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I starched and ironed the tablecloth and napkins, polished each glass, and set the table at least a day before the big event. I slavishly followed menus, trekking from store to store to find the exact ingredients. No recipe was too long, no meal too elaborate. In fact, I thrived on multistep dishes that required days of attention and care: puff pastry, layered pates and vegetable terrines, miniature sweet and savory tarts. I still love to have friends over, but something happened along the way. First one daughter was born, then a second. Part-time work evolved into a full-time job. Casual hobbies became passionate avocations. With all these activities fighting for my time, I had to change the way I cooked. My menus are simple and flexible now, and my parties mostly spur-of-the- moment. I love potlucks and shared suppers, and kids are always welcome. The food's fun, the atmosphere's casual, and family and friends always gravitate to the kitchen.

    SOUPS Classification of Soup Soups can be classified into t hree main categories: Clear Soups: These soups are based on a clear, un-thickened broth or stock. They may be served plain or garnished with a variety of meats and vegetables. 1. Broth and Bouillon are two terms used in many different ways, but in gen eral they both refer to simple, clear soup without solid ingredients. Broth is the flavorful liq uid obtained from simmering meat and/or vege tables, and is often the base for another soup. 2. Vegetable Soup or cut vegetable soup is a clear, seasoned stock or broth with the addition of one or more vegetables an d sometimes meat or poultry products and starch to lightly thicken and give body to the soup. 3. Consomme is a rich flavorful stock that has been clarified to make it perfectly clear and transparent. Far from being a plain cup of soup, a well- made consomm é is considered the greatest of all soups. Its spa rkling clarity is a delight to the eye, and its rich, full flavor, strength, and body make it a perfect starter for an elegant dinner. We signaled our strategic intent by announcing a stronger relationship with Geisinger. The unique agreement positions Evangelical to move forward as an independent community hospital while working more closely with Geisinger to make healthcare delivery in our region more efficient, cost- effective, and simply better for the patients we serve. The Hospital broke ground on our most ambitious construction project to date—a 112,000-square-foot expansion that, while not changing our bed complement, will significantly impact how care is delivered at Evangelical. Patients and families will be admitted to private rooms with their own bathrooms, and our caregivers will have the space and privacy they need to support the healing process. We started the move to a single, integrated electronic medical record. The transition will improve efficiency as providers and staff no longer must jump from one system to another in caring for patients. We shifted our strategic employee training to better address social issues impacting the community beyond our Hospital’s walls. We addressed suicide awareness, took a fresh, more personalized look at sexual harassment, moved to help alleviate the opioid addiction epidemic, and developed an award-winning human trafficking education model that is being replicated at other institutions in Pennsylvania. In short, we spent the fiscal year adding dimension—to our physical footprint, to our strategic direction, to our digital infrastructure, and to our community impact.
