21 MmNCMMLBREN Written and compiled by Bonnie Milne Gardner

The Off-Broadway theatre company, Second Stage, has enjoyed numerous awards and accolades over the past ten years by devoting each production season to the works of one playwright—including Edward Albee, Horton Foote, and Adrieime Keimedy. But for its premiere season in 1987-88, Second Stage spotlighted Michael Weller, reviving Moonchildren and Loose Ends and introducing a new play. Spoils of War, which eventually moved to Broadway.

Although Weller graduated from Brandeis University in 1965 with a degree in music, his formative years had included a variety of theatre experiences. Bom in New York in 1942, son of a well-to-do photographer, Weller says he was deeply touched by his first theatre experience; seeing Beauty and the Beast in Las Vegas, though he’s not sure why. He participated in drama classes and productions at Stockbridge prep school, playing the middle-aged Peer Gynt at one point. At Brandeis, he joined “Hi-Charlie,” a group that did original musicals. He began by writing scores, but eventually scripted dialogue as well. A playwriting teacher at Brandeis encouraged Weller to study theatre in England after graduation, so he went to the University of Manchester. He married, and lived in England from 1965 to 1971, where his plays were first professionally produced. It was for a commission from London’s Royal Court Theater, around 1970, that he wrote Moonchildren. It was first performed here the following year.

Amy Ellenberger, Jason Podplesky, Shad Swinehart/photo by GeofB-ey Nelson 22 While studying in England, Weller was very much influenced by British writers John Osborne and John Arden, as well as Irish playwright Sean O’Casey. Although his early plays were often compared to Chekhov, Weller had never read his work, and disliked the few incompetent productions he’d seen as a student. He didn’t connect with the established American playwrights of the period, Arthur Miller or Termesee Williams, but Edward Albee’s Zoo Story he found “stunning.” Then, in the late sixties, a roomate in England showed him some early works by Lanford Wilson, Leonard Melfi, and Sam Shepard. These ofif-ofif-Broadway plays had characters that “sounded like normal people thinking and talking in an American kind of dialogue” that he hadn’t yet seen on stage. It was only after being exposed to these writers that Weller believes he found his own voice.

Wnle Moonchildren remains his most produced work, Weller has written nearly twenty other plays that have been produced in New York and major regional theatres around the country. In addition, he wrote the screenplays for Hair (1979) and Ragtime (1980). Weller’s plays are praised for skillful, witty dialogue, and sympathetic characterizations. He often examines such modem issues as personal commitment, marriage, and social conscience.

Writing in the September 1994 issue of American Theatre Magazine, Stephanie Coen says:

“(Weller) has been repeatedly characterized (much to his chagrin) as a chronicler of something called the ‘American Experience.’ The title may be irksome, but it’s also apt, although Weller’s domain isn’t state- of-the-nation so much as a state-of-the-psyche. Many of his plays are set against a political or social backdrop; his characters are poised for Change in the quintessentially liberal-American sense of the word. If those same characters often end up bmised and battered, well, that somehow seems quintessentially American, too.”

In the introduction to a 1997 anthology of his work, Weller explains that, as in Moonchildren nearly three decades ago, he continues to be concerned with his generation’s chosen lifestyles, but that now he sees it more in relation to “the ideals they try to protect in the face of time, waning energy, increasing confusion and the hardening certainty of our appearance here being a limited engagement.” He is particularly fascinated by how he and his closest contemporaries have “now lived to see the world change from one where we could plausibly (and with passion) believe that the efforts of a committed group of people like ourselves might alter a piece of history, to one where most if not all politics has become a subfunction (a rapidly diminishing subfunction) of global commerce.” A poignant afterthought for tonight’s performance.

Actors' Equity Association was founded in 1913 to protect actors from the severe mistreatment that penneated the industry at the time. Since its inception Equity has had only twelve presidents. The current president is Ron Silver. The 35,000 member association consists of distinguished stars and other professional actors and stage managers who work nationwide, from New York's Broadway to Los Angeles, from Minneapolis to Miami Beach, in regional, small professional, stock and dinner theatre, and in theatres for young audiences which build tlie audience of tommorow. These actors and stage managers are committed to working in the theatre as a professional, not an avocation, and bring to you the finest professional training and experience. By presenting Equity productions, this theatre offers to you, our audience, the best entertainment presented by the finest quality actors and stage managers that your admission dollars can buy.
