Forming A Partnership Simon Kenton Council and Columbus Crew A Perfect Fit

For many years, the Simon Kenton Council and the Columbus Crew have worked together to provide our Scouts and their families a special Scout Night with the Crew. A successful event that has drawn hundreds of Scouts each year exposing them to the sport of Soccer and Major League Soccer, Scout Night with the Crew has become a tradition for many of our Scouting units. Now is the time to take it to the next level and explore a partnership that goes beyond traditional advertising to reach our Scouting families and educate them on the event. To celebrate the newly formed national partnership between the BSA and MLS, the summer of 2012 is a great opportunity to explore exciting new avenues of reaching our Scouts and their families.

Each year, about 5,000 Scouts enjoy a summer camp experience in the Simon Kenton Council where they play sports, learn about the environment, make new friends and have fun. For many Scouts, this is their first experience being away from home and learning new things. For all our Scouts, it’s an opportunity to make memories to last a lifetime.

In 2011, Simon Kenton Council began forming community partnerships to enhance the summer camp experience for our Scouts while providing exposure for our supporters. Partnering with Simon Kenton Council’s summer camp programs not only allows for more Scouts to attend camp each summer, but ultimately provides enhanced experiences for everyone involved. Thanks to our 2011 partnerships, Scouts enjoyed working on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related advancements and earned a new Time Warner Cable Discover Badge. Our Scouts also had the opportunity to participate in new woodworking projects thanks to a partnership with Elmer’s Glue. These are just two examples of how camp partnerships allow for greater opportunities for our Scouts all while providing enhanced visibility for our partners to thousands of families across central and southern Ohio.

For the summer of 2012, Simon Kenton Council would like to offer the Columbus Crew an opportunity to lead the Council’s efforts in promoting fitness, while also exciting our Scouts about our annual popcorn sale fundraiser. By combining the efforts of promoting the importance of fitness to our Scouts while also educating them on the popcorn sale, the Columbus Crew has the opportunity to not only be visible to our Scouts during the summer camp season, but year-round during popcorn promotion efforts.

Why is this so important? Kids from 8 to 18 spend more than seven hours a day in front of the television, computers and video games – about as much time as they spend in school. And when they are in school only a third participates in physical education each day. One proven solution to wellness issues is outside play – a core Scouting value for more than 100 years. In fact, we’re doing more and more each year to promote wellness by educating our Scouts and leaders about the dangers of obesity and challenging them to become more fit.

A partnership between Simon Kenton Council’s summer camp program and the Columbus Crew would mean an even more concentrated effort in promoting physical fitness to our youth by engaging them in the sport of soccer. The soccer belt loop is just one way to engage our Cub Scouts in the sport, while helping to keep them physically fit at the same time. In addition to being able to educate our Scouts about soccer, Simon Kenton Council will be promoting the annual Scout Night with the Crew event while generating year-round enthusiasm for soccer by extending past the summer camp season and into the council’s popcorn sale. Simon Kenton Council’s Summer Camp Partnership Recognition:

. Camp T-Shirt Recognition More than 5,000 camp shirts are printed and worn by Scouts and leaders who attend summer camp across 18 counties in central and southern Ohio and northern Kentucky. The Columbus Crew logo would be included on the back of each camp shirt.

. Columbus Crew Soccer Station All Cub Scout camps will include a Columbus Crew soccer station. Here, Scouts will have the opportunity to work on the Soccer belt loop while also being trained on selling popcorn for the Council’s annual sale. A fun soccer activity will be linked to the training and a selling incentive based on the Columbus Crew partnership will be promoted to all the Scouts.

. Newsletter Recognition (15,000 homes) Simon Kenton Council will provide the Columbus Crew a full page color advertisement space in the Council’s January issue of The Scouter newsletter in addition to an article detailing the partnership. This newsletter is distributed to 15,000 homes in the Council’s 18 county territory.

. Promotional Materials/Website Recognition The Columbus Crew logo will be used in all summer camp promotions both printed and distributed to Scout leaders and families, as well as being posted on Simon Kenton Council’s website.

. Annual Report Recognition The Columbus Crew will be recognized in Simon Kenton Council’s 2012 Annual Report as a Summer Camp partner.

. Popcorn Kick-Off Simon Kenton Council will host its annual Popcorn kick-off for Scouting leaders and families at a fall Scout Night with the Crew. This will be a great enhancement to the popcorn sale while increasing attendance at a Crew soccer game.

. Popcorn Incentive The Columbus Crew will be able to offer our Scouts a special promotional package as a popcorn incentive for the 2012 popcorn sale. This promotion will be advertised to all Scouting units in the Simon Kenton Council both leading up to, and during the sale. Partnership Request: Simon Kenton Council requests a $5,000 monetary donation from the Columbus Crew as part of a new partnership connecting Scouting families with the Columbus Crew through both our summer camp programs and popcorn sale. This partnership will allow for greater exposure for the Columbus Crew, as well as a solid opportunity for corporate citizenship in the Columbus market.
