FROM VICE CHANCELLOR’S DESK

I am happy to note that this issue of Newsletter highlights the activities of the University in the areas of teaching, research, innovations, infrastructure facilities, administrative initiatives and co- curricular activities held during July-December 2015. Mangalore University is one of the premier Universities in the country in terms of research, curricular and co-curricular activities. Our University has been able to admit a good number of international students from different parts of the world for UG, PG and Ph.D programmes. The student strength for Ph.D programmes has been increased. The adjunct professors motivated the students and faculties with their expertise in relevant subjects by delivering special lectures. The vision document- 2030 was released on the 36th Foundation Day celebration and the former Vice Chancellors have been felicitated for their contribution to the development of Mangalore University. Our University has excelled in sports and cultural activities. Our students got second place in All India Inter University Athletic Championship and runner up in All India Inter University Youth Festival. I congratulate the faculty and students for their achievement and co-operation in all our efforts towards excellence in catering higher education and research.

Vision Document – 2030 released during 36th Foundation Day Celebration

The 36th Foundation Day of Mangalore University was celebrated on September 11, 2015. Shri Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, Honourable Governor of Karnataka and Chancellor, Mangalore University inaugurated and released the Vision Document – 2030. Prof. Krishan Lal, F.N.A, President, The Association of Academics and Societies of Sciences in Asia, Former President, Indian National Science Academy, Former President, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi delivered the Foundation Day lecture. Prof. M.I.Savadatti, Former Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University & Chairman Vision Document Committee 2030 was the chief guest. Achievers of Mangalore University Sri Girish Rao ‘Jogi’ (Literature) Sri (Music), Mamatha Pujary and M.R. Poovamma (Sports) and Former Vice Chancellors of Mangalore University Prof. Sheik Ali, Prof. M. I. Savadatti and Prof. Hanumaiah were felicitated.

Vanamahotsava Celebrated Vanamahotsava, a plantation drive at Mangalore University was organized in association with Lions Club, Mangaluru and Lions Club Mangalagangothri on August, 10, 2015. Mr. M. Dinesh Nayak, Advisor, Green Belt-SEZ, Mangaluru inaugurated the programme. Prof. K. Byrappa, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University presided over the function. About 1000 saplings were distributed to all the departments of Mangalore University.

The Center for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER), Mangalore University organized the 20th National Symposium on Radiation Physics (NSRP-20) in association with the Indian Society for Radiation Physics (ISRP) during October 28-30, 2015. Sri H. S. Kushwah, Former Director, 5

Health, Safety and Environment Group, BARC and Raja Ramanna Fellow, Department of Atomic Energy inaugurated the conference. Prof. K. Siddappa, Former Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University released the proceedings of the conference. Dr. D. V. Gopinath, Former Director, Health, Safety and Environment Group, BARC inaugurated the ISRP website. Prof. K. Byrappa, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University, presided over the inaugural function. About 200 delegates participated in the conference from reputed institutions, including national laboratories such as BARC, IGCAR, PRL, Defense Laboratories, Nuclear Power Stations, Universities and IIT’s.

AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS CHEMISTRY Prof. Balakrishna Kalluraya Department of Chemistry, Mangalore University, Mangalagangothri received the Best Teacher Award (Science Faculty) for 2015. He was also conferred with the Prof. S.P. Hiremath Award by Indian Council of Chemists at 34th annual conference of the Indian Council of Chemists held at UKA –Tarsadia University, Bardoli, Surat, on Dec. 26, 2015.

Prof. Vishalakshi B., Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, Mangalore University, Mangalagangothri received the Dr. Kalpana Chawla State Award for Young Women Scientists – 2013. The award instituted in 2003, is given by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology to women scientists /engineers who make outstanding contribution in the field of Science and Technology in the state.

Centre for Women’s Studies

A workshop on Gender Sensitivity was conducted for the students of Kukke Sri Subrahmanyeshwara College Subrahmanya on Aug. 08-09, 2015. There were two resource persons from the NGO HITHA in Mangalore.

A two day Gender Sensitization workshop was organized by DEEDS and HITHA, NGOs in Mangalore for post Graduate students of the Chikka Aluvara Campus. A total of 100 students participated in the two day workshop from Aug. 18 – 19, 2015.

A one day workshop was organized for the coordinators of Women’s Cells of the affiliated Colleges coming under the jurisdiction of Mangalore University on Sept. 24, 2015 jointly by the Centre for Women’s Studies and DEEDS. Twenty three coordinators representing fifteen colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts participated in this workshop. Discussions were held on the various activities that were taken up by these cells and the challenges faced by them. Future plans regarding the activities were also discussed.

Yakshamangala Annual Award – 2015 were conferred on Sri Hosthota Manjunatha Bhagavatha, Yakshagana researcher, well known writer and yakshagana poet, Sri Margoli Govinda Sheregar, famous Yakshagana Artist of Badaguthittu, Sri Sampaje Sheenappa Rai, well known Yakshagana Artist of Thenkuthittu and Smt. Leelavathi Bypadithaya, famous Yakshagana Bhagavatha. Dr.Mohana Kuntar, received Yakshamangala Book Award for his outstanding Research Work Yakshagana Sthithyanthara at the Annual Yakshamangala Award 2015 held on 7th November 2015 at Mangala Auditorium.

The Yakshagana Study Centre organized short term training programme in Yakshagana for post graduate students of the campus. The students were trained in different aspects of yakshagana by senior yakshagana artists. This training programme was organized with an objective of forming students’ troupe in yakshagana. Yakshamangala Students’ Troupe consisting of thirty post graduate students was formed. This team performed Sayujya Sangrama at Mangala Auditorium in the campus on 7th November 2015. This training programme catered to the needs of University students who were interested in yakshagana performance.

Seminars/Workshops/Demonstrations The centre, in collaboration with various Yakshagana Organisations has organized Seminars and workshops on different aspects of Yakshagana. The Yakshagana Study Centre in collaboration with, Academy of Thenkuthittu Yakshagana, New Delhi, organized a seminar on Kannada Mattu Samskruthiya Ulivige Yakshaganada Koduge followed by aYakshagana Performance on July 11, 2015. In collaboration with Yakshachandana, Dantakal, the Study Centre organized fifteen days training programme for women at Sirsi from Oct. 3-17, 2015. In collaboration with Siribagilu Venkappayya Samskruthika Prathishtana, Kasaragod, the Study Centre organized one day Seminar on Oct. 24, 2015 at Madhur. Six scholars presented their ideas on different aspects about Krishnakaranth, a well known Yakshagana Scholar. In collaboration with Kalabhaskara, Siddapura, Uttarakannada, the Study Centre organized Seminar from October 29-31, 2015 on Kavi Kavya Prayoga Parinama at Siddapura. In collaboration with Yakshangana, Mangalore, the Study Centre organized seven days Yakshagana Thalamaddale Sapthaha from November 15-21, 2015 at Ravindra Kala Bhavan, University College, Mangalore.

COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL One day University level Workshop on Rover-Ranger was held at Ravindra Kala Bhavan, University College, Mangalore. The workshop was organized by CDC, Mangalore University in association with Bharath Scouts and Guides, Mangalore on Sept.3, 2015. This program was designed for college teachers. 98 participants from 62 affiliated colleges participated in the workshop.

A UGC Sponsored National Level Workshop on “Operation and Maintenance of Analytical Instruments” was organized by the Department of Chemistry, from 7th to 11th September 2015 with technical support and Resource persons from Western Regional Instrumentation Centre (WRIC), University of Mumbai. The Objective of the Workshop was to train the teachers and technicians of Chemistry and Life science Departments of degree colleges about the operation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic laboratory equipments.

FATHER MULLER COLLEGE OF SPEECH & HEARING Seminars/Workshops Organised The college hosted a state level conference on “Recent advances in the assessment and management of tinnitus”, on 13th&14th August 2015. ENT specialists and several eminent professionals from All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore were invited as resource persons.

Outreach programs The college extends rehabilitative service to individuals with special needs in collaboration with SSA Mangalore. Weekly twice speech and language therapy is given to children identified at SSA school in Mangalore. Once in a fortnight staff and students go to St. Mary’s Special School, Kinnigoli wherein speech therapy services are provided for children with speech and language disorders.

In collaboration with Inchara foundation, first anniversary of Project Angel was celebrated on September 16, 2015– An initiative for prevention of child sexual abuse, a massive human chain of safety circle was formed in 21 places in the city of Mangalore by students of various schools and colleges. Students from more than 40 schools participated in the programme.

 Mangalore University organized All India Inter University Cross Country (Men & Women) Championship on October 11, 2015 at Alvas College, Moodbidri.
