This book is the autobiography of (and, of course, it was therefore written by) Asbury Harpending.This is an essential volume of and history and Americana. Harpending was a San Francisco businessman - a financial buccaneer, if you will - before and after the Civil War. He was involved in Confederate activities on the Coast, the Kern River gold rush, pushing "Montgomery Street South" through (today it is New Montgomery Street), and much more.Including a somewhat murky role in The Great Diamond Hoax. Mr. Harpending's account is first-hand - but it is, after all, just one view. And it was clearly written to vindicate Mr. Harpending.I highly recommend this book - it is quite entertaining. It isn't, of course, the final word on The Great Diamond Hoax. Read it perhaps as partially a ficticious novel. Certainly do not take everything in it at face value.What it does provide is a contemporaneous view of the turmoil of the 1860s and 70s in California and Nevada. Mixed in with the . In part, the book gives a slant on how that war was fought in the Pacific coast. Something rarely treated in most Civil War texts. Much less bloody than the main battlefronts of the East and South. But with plenty of intrigue to make up for the relative lack of bloodshed.
