Cleveland (Washington, DC, Environmental Information Coalition, National Council for Science and the Environment). http://www.eoearth.org/article/Salmon_in_western_North_America:_assessing_the_future Introduction Wild salmon in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and southern British Columbia have been on a 160 year downward trend and are now at very low levels. Efforts to reverse the decline have been extensive and expensive, but have not met with much success. Salmon in the lower 48 states are well on their way to attaining a status enjoyed by some of their notable brethren — wolves, condors, grizzles, bison — wild animals that are unlikely to disappear entirely, but struggle to hang on as remnants of once flourishing species in small portions of their original range. A few entrepreneurs may be marketing the superior taste of buffalo burgers, but wild bison today are found only in Yellowstone and a few other refuges. This prediction will not surprise anyone familiar with the state of wild salmon runs. Consider the following facts: in California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and southern British Columbia, many runs are reduced to less than 10% of their historical numbers; some have disappeared. Many salmon runs are dominated by hatchery-bred fish. Even for the Columbia River, once the mightiest salmon-producing river south of Canada, over 80% of the total run is now comprised of hatchery-bred fish. -

Early Eocene climates were globally warm, with ice-free conditions at both poles. Early 16 Eocene polar landmasses supported extensive forest ecosystems of a primarily temperate biota, 17 but also with abundant thermophilic elements such as crocodilians, and mesothermic taxodioid 18 conifers and angiosperms. The globally warm early Eocene was punctuated by geologically brief 19 hyperthermals such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), culminating in the 20 Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO), during which the range of thermophilic plants such as 21 palms extended into the Arctic. Climate models have struggled to reproduce early Eocene Arctic 22 warm winters and high precipitation, with models invoking a variety of mechanisms, from 23 atmospheric CO2 levels that are unsupported by proxy evidence, to the role of an enhanced 24 hydrological cycle to reproduce winters that experienced no direct solar energy input yet remained 25 wet and above freezing. -

POWELL2 The plumyews (Cephalotaxus) are yew-like evergreen trees and shrubs. The genus includes seven species native to southeastern Asia from Japan and Korea to Taiwan and Hainan, and west through China to northeastern India. Two species are in cultivation in the United States, C. harringtoniaJ (Fig. 1 & 2) of which there are several varieties (one often listed as C. drupacea) , and C. fortunii (Fig. 3). The cultivars are shrubs up to about 20 feet in height; most have broad crowns. The linear and pointed leaves are spirally arranged or in two opposite ranks. The upper sur Fig. 1. Torreya Taxifolia
photograph © Abraham Rammeloo Torreya taxifolia produces seeds in 40 Kalmthout Arboretum ABRAHAM RAMMELOO, Curator of the Kalmthout Arboretum, writes about this rare conifer that recently produced seed for the first time. Torreya is a genus of conifers that comprises four to six species that are native to North America and Asia. It is closely related to Taxus and Cephalotaxus and is easily confused with the latter. However, it is relatively easy to distinguish them apart by their leaves. Torreya has needles with, on the underside, two small edges with stomas giving it a green appearance; Cephalotaxus has different rows of stomas, and for this reason the underside is more of a white colour. It is very rare to find Torreya taxifolia in the wild; it is native to a small area in Florida and Georgia. It grows in steep limestone cliffs along the Apalachicola River. These trees come from a warm and humid climate where the temperature in winter occasionally falls below freezing. They grow mainly on north-facing slopes between Fagus grandifolia, Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer barbatum, Liquidambar styraciflua and Quercus alba. They can grow up to 15 to 20 m high. The needles are sharp and pointed and grow in a whorled pattern along the branches. They are 25 to 35 mm long and stay on the tree for three to four years. If you crush them, they give off a strong, sharp odour. HYDRANGEA CARE Hydrangeas Can Be Confusing When It Comes to Requirements and Especially Pruning
HYDRANGEA CARE Hydrangeas can be confusing when it comes to requirements and especially pruning. We’ve broken down the hydrangeas we carry into three basic groups to easily explain the differences. HYDRANGEA ARBORESCENS (SMOOTH HYDRANGEA) Smooth hydrangeas are some of the easiest to grow and lowest maintenance hydrangeas. They are known for their large flower heads, sturdy stems, and great cut flowers. They almost always bloom on new wood which means they should be pruned in late fall. Smooth hydrangeas can be cut back 6-8” from the ground in late fall if desired. Includes: Annabelle & Invincible Spirit II (and others) HYDRANGEA MACROPHYLLA (BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA) Bigleaf or “ever-blooming” hydrangeas are desired for their deep green leaves, numerous blooms, and easy care. Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on both new and old wood, but most of their summer blooms occur on wood formed the previous summer. To encourage new blooms throughout the summer, remove spent blooms as soon as they’re done flowering. The sooner this is done, the longer the plant will be allowed to recover and set new buds for the next season. This will encourage larger and more numerous blooms. Bigleaf hydrangeas prefer a location where they receive morning sun (about 4 hours) but are shaded from the afternoon sun. If they are planted in an area with total shade, it is not likely that they will bloom. Includes: Endless Summer, Blushing Bride, Seaside Cape Cod, Grateful Red, & Bloomstruck (and others) HYDRANGEA PANICULATA (GRANDIFLORA HYDRANGEA) Grandiflora hydrangeas are some of the most commonly planted hydrangeas in this area. They are tolerant of numerous conditions and are easy to grow. -

Most of these finds were made in Alberta and British Columbia, but the Yukon Territory can lay claim to at least one tracksite and probably has the potential to yield more sites. The record of dinosaur tracks with skin impressions has increased dramatically, and is now represented by specimens of ankylosaurs, large ornithopods, small theropods and tyrannosauroids. Notable new finds include the first record of sauropods in Canada, evidence of herding behavior in ankylosaurs and the first pterosaur tracks in Canada. First discoveries of track specimens from several formations in western Canada include the Mountain Park Member of the Gates Formation in Alberta, and the Boulder Creek, Goodrich, Kaskapau, Cardium and Marshybank formations in northeastern British Columbia. -

This botanical treasure trove is under growing pressure from a complex chain of cause and effect of unprecedented magnitude: demographic, socio-economic and climatic changes, habitat conversion and loss, unsustainable use of native species and introduction of exotic ones, together with environmental contamination are rapidly transforming China’s ecosystems. There is a steady rise in the number of plant species that are on the verge of extinction. Great Wall, Badaling, Beijing (Image: Zhang Qingyuan) Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) therefore seeks to assist China in its endeavours to maintain and conserve the country’s extraordinary botanical heritage and the benefits that this biological diversity provides for human well-being. It is a challenging venture and represents one of BGCI’s core practical conservation programmes.
