Session 9: Theme of the Week: November 13, 2011 Creator of Heaven and Earth

The Story of the Week: One day a man was walking through a field, deep in meditation and reflection. He stood in awe before a huge oak tree, reflecting on the tiny acorns lying around the base of the tree—the ones that had fallen off in the wind. He looked across the fence at a huge field of pumpkins, each one growing on a tiny vine plant. Suddenly he had a thought: “God made a mistake, surely! Why should the huge pumpkins be on tiny vines and the tiny acorns grow on a huge oak tree? It doesn’t make any sense.” Just then there was a slight puff of wind and a tiny acorn fell from the oak tree, and plump! It hit him on the crown of his head. He smiled a wry smile, and said, “Maybe God was on top of things, after all!”

An explanation of the weekly theme: The church teaches that God himself is the creator of heaven and earth, of all—of everything both material and spiritual. God creates this out of nothing (ex nihilo)! Pope John Paul II upholds this basic tenet of belief, and he tells us that God’s reason is because he “is love”. Our belief in the radical gift character of existence—the root of the character of existence—is love! Notice that God doesn’t “make”, because that would presume that there were materials that God rearranged to make all things. God starts with nothing and he loses nothing of himself in the creative act. That is where the Church must part company with the concept of Intelligent Design. Theories of evolution which…consider the mind as emerging from the forces of living matter are incompatible with the truth about man. God created in freedom by his Word, and the Holy Spirit remains active in the world and continues to draw all things to their goal. Oh the depths of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! For from him and through him and for him are all things.

General Question: Do you believe that our loving God continues to create us in order to bring us closer to Him? Family Question: Are we aware of what’s being taught to our children in school about Intelligent Design and evolution? Children’s Question: Do you believe that our loving God created the world, including YOU, or all creation just happened randomly?

Come, taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
