I finally decided on the Brittany. In honor of how long took me to find exactly what I was looking for, I named her Oakhill It’s About Time (otherwise known as Rowan). Although I specifically decided I wasn’t looking for a conformation dog, I entered Rowan in her first two shows at the age of six months as part of her socialization. We had been to a few handling classes to brush up on my rusty skills and give her some idea what was expected. As you can imagine, she danced through those two puppy classes without ever having all four feet on the ground and came home with two blue ribbons! Okay, chalk that up as activity number one. What’s next? She obviously needed some formal training. A number of my friends were working with a respected trainer/judge in rally and obedience so I joined them in several months of classes. Rowan progressed through the levels and mastered many rally skills like double U-turns, 270 and 360 degree turns, going out to a marker and sitting, side-stepping, etc. The only thing we still seriously struggled with was heeling at my side in a straight line! After all, her favorite activity is running full tilt through a field, not walking. She did earn her Rally Novice title in two weekends. Sport number two in her record book. We also took a detour into an agility intro course. She absolutely loved it! Every obstacle was an exhilarating game. She did them all as fast as possible, flying over the a-frame and teeter, up onto the platform, a little slower on the walk-over and weave poles, and diving into the tunnel. She wasn’t particular about the order on the course or whether I was anywhere around. Oh well, it was fun and we will come back to it someday, when she is a little older and possibly calmer. Anyway, we’ll count that as number three. When AKC announced the trick dog titles, and I scoffed at the idea of learning 25 tricks to get titles. We tried it and, of course, she loved it. Just a new way to play games. She demonstrated skills like catching a ball, walking backwards, rolling over, sit, stand, and down from a distance (hand signals only), balancing on a step, and push-ups. I especially appreciated it when she learned to pick up her toys and put them in the toy box. So, she is now an Advanced Trick Dog and that makes four different activities. This year she earned a title that may seem simple to many dog owners, but was really tough for Rowan. One requirement for the CGC is to stay calm while the handler walks up to another dog owner, exchanges pleasantries and a handshake, and another requires her to sit calmly while a stranger approaches and examines her ears and feet. Remember when I mentioned that Rowan is very social? That means anyone approaching wants a big hug. How can a friendly Brittany ignore that? Anyway she finally managed to act aloof and dignified for long enough to pass the test. Skill number five! Finally, I discovered a sport that really capitalizes on all those hours she has put into sniffing out birds, squirrels, rats, gophers, lizards, and bugs! A dog who spends most of her waking hours sniffing everything around her needs to go into nose work. We just completed a 6-week Introduction to Odor class, and she is a star. She can find a little tin of birch oil anywhere in a room and pick out the correct scent-bearing objects among a dozen “cold” containers. Now she is starting to work on exterior searches and soon she will begin vehicle searches. I expect her to be competing in trials in September. Skill number six. So, how accurate did I find those breed descriptions when I was researching Brittanys? Not bad, but there were a couple that might need amending (at least when describing Rowan). First, they are trainable. Well, yes, as long as Rowan and I agree on what we should be training for. And I really have to take issue with the emphasis on “dual purpose”. Brittanys are Not dual purpose… They are multi-purpose dogs! That’s why there is a page called Versatile Brittanys in Action! Versatile Brittanys in Action Column, By Carla Simon Cruising to a Gold Grand Championship and UDX

Congratulations to Nancy Hewitt of California and her Brittany GCHG CH Hope's exceeding The Speed Limit UDX OM1 "Cruise" on earning his Gold Grand Championship as well as his UDX in competitive obedience! Nancy summarized “I believe he is the only Brittany that has accomplished this! Probably not many other breeds have! So proud of my boy". Kudos to this team for accomplishing such a long and difficult title. (Photo by Teddy Lei photography)

Adding Scent to Neuromuscular Stimulation of Puppies (Part 2 of 2)

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change over time, for better or for worse. Brains respond to repeated exercises by building connections between cells. For example, when you learn a new dance step, your brain creates new connections between nerve cells (like connecting wires). If you want to be a better dancer, practicing dance steps strengthens the neural pathways in your brain associated with dancing.

Throughout a canine’s life, olfactory neurons only live for 1-2 months, and then they are replaced. The more a dog smells a scent, the more his body responds by producing olfactory receptors for that specific scent. That’s one reason why, even fully trained detector dogs need maintenance training on the target odors to preserve those pathways.

You can also kickstart puppies’ olfactory development by exposing them to a wide variety of novel scents. By introducing a new scent to a puppy, every day, for 3-5 seconds you may increase their future performance. Neural pathways are enhanced by experience with many, diverse scents in a variety of conditions, including other distraction odors.

So, by introducing many new scents to puppies, and then following up with regular training on your target odors, you can help your canine partner to be an even better sniffer dog.

PLEASE NOTIFY both the Publisher and the Executive Secretary of any changes in Club Secretaries or Websites. MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB Give the gift of a new membership… to give the opportunity to someone to learn about and participate in the American Brittany Club. This membership campaign is really quite simple, we are asking every member to donate/sponsor a membership in the American Brittany Club. This “gifted” membership might be to a puppy purchaser, or a friend/acquaintance who has a Brittany. All of us encounter people who may just need a little encouragement to become members. This can work, but it is totally dependent upon your support. Please use the ABC application form in the back of the magazine to enroll a new member today. You may donate/sponsor multiple new memberships. The names of new members & ABC sponsors will be published in the magazine on a quarterly basis. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! 48 Listings: Breeders • Kennels • At Stud • Trainers & Handlers The below listings of Breeders, Kennels, At Stud and Trainers & Handlers does not constitute an endorsement by the American Brittany Club.
