Queen Emeraldas is the story of the pirate spaceship, Queen Emeraldaswhich is captained by the mysterious and beautiful Emeraldas, a strong and powerful privateer. Sometimes, the character Emereldas is referred to as Pirate Queen Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1. As the freighter is flying through space they are attacked by an Afressian ship bearing the Skull and Crossbones insignia. However, the train is saved by Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 mysterious and incredibly powerful spaceship which also bears the insignia and is able to make it to their destination, a desert planet with a Western atmosphere, complete with saloons and bar fights. The boy meets up with another stowaway, an old man, and becomes friends with him. He tells the old man that he came to the planet in order to become a stronger individual. He gets himself a job in a bar with the roughest reputation on the planet to prove himself. Another divergence from the manga takes place here when Emeraldas states that there are five Cosmo Dragoons in existence hers and the ones owned by Tochiro, Captain Harlock, Tetsuro and Maetelwhereas in the manga there are only four. Later, Hiroshi Umino and his elderly friend visit a planet whose inhabitants have been forced out by a murderous cyborg. This cyborg killed one of the planet's inhabitants and drove his son mad. Umino meets the son and his sister and with their help and Emeraldas', he kills the oppressive cyborg. While the story can stand on its own, independent of Matsumoto's other works, it mostly assumes that the viewer has seen the other Harlock titles, especially Galaxy Express the TV series and the movieswhich featured MaetelEmeraldas' sister, but had the occasional appearance of Emeraldas Note: Maetel, for some reason in the English dub is referred to as Mataire. The story of Queen Emeraldas is set five years after the events of the final Galaxy Express movie and was designed to give Matsumoto's fans a further glimpse into what became of Emeraldas. However, of the other characters, most are only mentioned in passing, except for Captain Harlock who has a brief cameo appearance. Those two episodes also have regular runs on the Action Channel. In Japan, the remaining two episodes were produced by MAC Multi Access Company and were released the following year after the initial Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1, indicating that a separate contract that is not yet forthcoming would be required for anyone to license the concluding episodes of the story outside Japan. Leiji Matsumoto first published a one-shot in in the publisher Akita Shoten 's magazine Princess. An original video anime adaptation was produced by Oriental Light and Magic and released in four episodes between and Emeraldas appeared in the Space Pirate Captain Harlock television series during flashbacks. She also had a guest appearance in the Galaxy Express series. This episode, Eternal Traveller Emeraldas, was later Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 into an hour-long television special expanding on that story. She subsequently appeared as a supporting character in the film Arcadia of My Youth where it is shown how she obtained her facial scar. Her origin and youth is depicted Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 Maetel Legend. As with Harlock and most other characters of the Leijiverse, Emeraldas' appearances in various stories cannot be applied to one consistent timeline. In Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 Galaxy Express story, for example, one notable difference from her other depictions is that Emeraldas is Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 from an unknown illness. Her place as captain was taken over by a robot imposter while she was mostly confined to bed. The story suggests that she does not have much longer to live. This illness is alluded to in the recent manga where Emeraldas does not engage in much physical action due to her weakened condition. However, the OVA version is a fearsome combatant—as seen in her gravity saber duel with Queen Baraluda—and shows no sign of any such illness. In the original Captain Harlock series in episode 30 My Friend, My Youth Emeraldas is shown to have a younger brother, but no sister is ever mentioned. Such a tremendous let down to a great premise, space pirates are you kidding me? Lone lady pirate voyaging thru space she's a bounty hunter, she's a freedom fighter, and an assassin. This should be exciting but it is boring. Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 is so boring, there is no backstory. This story is convoluted and repetitive. It kinda reads like a spaghetti western where the cowboy is in love with his horse. Or like if a gal builds a car and the trips that she makes are supposed to be more interesting because she built the car with her own two hands, but of the pages are dedicated to the car, or the relationship to the car or problems facing the car. Finished the two volumes of Queen Emeraldas by Leiji Matsumoto, and my ratings would be the same for both. I like how quiet and spacious it is, there's some cool places, and there is atmosphere but it's very annoying how Emeraldas introduces herself constantly and keeps saying the same things about herself, the story is just way too impressed by the characters and ominous plot points seem to be dropped or ignored unless they carried into other related stories. There's a Harlock crossover in the Finished Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 two volumes of Queen Emeraldas by Leiji Matsumoto, and my ratings would be the same for both. There's a Harlock crossover in the second volume with lots more humor, the cat being attached to the pole to eat the bird was funny. I was amused by the dad executing his own bratty daughter in the main story but I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be funny. Read half of the first Captain Harlock book, much more comedic but still has some of the same annoyances. I dropped it, completely leaving the second book hopefully I'll finally stop buying multiple comics in a series before I've read the first, thank goodness I didn't buy the third Harlock book and Space Battleship Yamato book. I'm worried I Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 have the patience for my Hellboy omnibuses. The art isn't especially great but I vastly prefer it to the more recent incarnations by other artists. He sticks to the same body types to a curious degree but the sheer amount Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 open space is nice, the ship is quite cool. It's a cruel galaxy until kindred spirits with similar goals of absoloute freedom help each other out. Some of the animated versions Matsumoto seems to write most of them? It's all one big Matsumoto universe. Had wanted to read Galaxy Express if it ever came to english the succession of recent Matsumoto translations made me suppose it would in a year or two, but who knowsbut it's doubtful I'll want to try it now, even if it is considered his best. A haunting tale of the mysterious Emeraldas, a lonely woman wandering the space-ways for reasons only she knows. Despite shopping at the same clothing store as Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Emeraldas and her vessel the Queen Emeraldas have a very different vibe and go through a different sort of adventure. A little vague, plot-wise, but Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 of the stories center around a boy trying to build spaceships to get off planets, crashing on a new planet, and starting over. So far I'm enjoying the ride. I've always liked Queen Emeraldas and her fabulous dirigible-shaped ship complete with pirate ship gondola and we get plenty of it here, as opposed to her more limited but important roles in som I've long been a fan of the Leiji Matsumoto universe, but up until recently I mostly knew it from the various animated films and television series that had their heyday in the post-Yamato era; and as more of the original comics get translated, I've been playing catch-up. I've always liked Queen Emeraldas and her fabulous dirigible-shaped ship complete with pirate ship gondola and we get plenty of it here, as opposed to her more limited but important roles in some of the other Matsumoto-associated works in which she appears. The animated version of the Leijiverse is wonderful, but there's a tendency to tone down some of its more bizarre aspects. Here in the comics though, we get the pure, uncut stuff. It's mostly pretty entertaining, but over two volumes, it gets a bit samey. How many old west frontier-style towns are there in the Leijiverse anyway? And how many times can we read a caption over the final page about how Queen Emeraldas eternally roams the Queen Emeraldas 1: Volume 1 sea of stars accompanied by a picture of her staring off into the great unknown, the state of her heart unknowable?
