    ILLINOIS CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION 117th Congress Two Senators represent each state in the U.S. Senate and are elected to serve six-year terms. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) of Springfield was elected to represent Illinois for a fifth term in 2020. Tammy Duckworth of Hoffman Estates (D) was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. (See pages 16-19 for U.S. Senator photos and biographies.) In the November 2020 general election, Illinois voters elected 18 candidates to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives for two-year terms. Thirteen Democratic and five Republican U.S. Representatives were elected to serve in the 117th Congress. The November 2020 general election was historical, with the most women ever elect- ed to serve in Congress. Democrat Marie Newman and Republican Mary Miller — repre- senting districts that were previously held by men — added to the increase of female Representatives. Newman definitively won the general election to represent the 13th District after defeating 16-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinksi (D) in the March pri- mary. Miller won the 15th District seat that was previously held by U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R), who served 12 terms in Congress and opted not to run for reelection. Since 1818, Illinois has had a total of 20 female U.S. Representatives. In 2021, seven are currently rep- resenting our state — a record-breaking total.     The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) Call to Action Tell Senators Cornyn and Cruz and members of Congress to support Rent Assistance in the next stimulus bill This week the US Congress is deciding what will be funded in a stimulus bill that will be more than $1 Trillion. The House passed the $3 Trillion HEROES Act two months ago (HR 6800) which set aside $100 Billion for Rent Assistance and $75 Billion for Mortgage Relief. The Senate is proposing a much smaller stimulus bill and they currently do not plan any rent assistance. Here are some reasons why TMO supports rent assistance: • Its immoral and unhealthy to force families into homelessness during a global pandemic. • More than half of Houston families are renters. • In a recent survey, over 40% of Texas renters were unsure they could pay August rent. • Each day hundreds of area families are being evicted or self-evicting and doubling up in apartments of family and friends—one reason why there is so much community spread of COVID in neighborhoods with many apartment complexes. • The CARES Act has had a moratorium on evictions/foreclosures on rental properties with mortgages guaranteed by the federal government, but that moratorium ends July 25. While COVID-19 related-research is now in overdrive, most other research has been slowed down or stopped due to pandemic-induced closures of campuses and laboratories. We are deeply concerned that the people who comprise the research workforce – graduate students, postdocs, principal investigators, and technical support staff – are at risk. While Federal rules have allowed researchers to continue to receive their salaries from federal grant funding, their work has been stopped due to shuttered laboratories and facilities and many researchers are currently unable to make progress on their grants. Additionally, researchers will need supplemental funding to support an additional four months’ salary, as many campuses will remain shuttered until the fall, at the earliest. Many core research facilities – typically funded by user fees – sit idle. Still, others have incurred significant costs for shutting down their labs, donating the personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline health care workers, and cancelling planned experiments. Congress must act to preserve our current scientific workforce and ensure that the U.S.
