JOHN STEINBECK Low of 55. www.thewestfieldnews.com VOL.Clerical 86 NO. 151 TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2017 75 cents abuse affects Westfield family By Peter Currier Correspondent WESTFIELD – The abuse of a city man at the hands of a trusted priest continues to haunt him — and his entire family — decades later and even con- tributed to the loss of his job last month. His family is breaking their silence to tell the story that began before he was a teenager and still affects them today. From alcoholism to mental illness, lost licenses and lost jobs, they are sharing their struggles, heartbreak, and the dark secrets they kept with the hope of inspiring other victims to come forward. Their names have been changed for privacy. At age 12, John Campbell was the victim of sexual abuse by a local Catholic priest his family trusted and welcomed to their dinner table, right here in Westfield. His parents, Tom and Grace, were avid volunteers in their church and their son John would often accom- pany them to church events. He was a typical kid growing up, but something changed, something John Grand opening suppressed for many years. John, working late as he often did by nature of his job, came home drunk and revealed his deeply buried secret to his wife Rachel. His past began to unravel and explained his previous years of drinking and questionable behavior, which became worse after his revelation. Surprise send-off for Chris Craig CHESTER – Students and staff were keeping a secret from a long-time aide at Chester Elementary School. Title I Paraprofessional Christine Craig was marking the final day of her Gateway Career when she was honored by students at the school. What started as a simple end-of-year assembly to give out student awards for things like floor hockey and cheerleading, Cabral then turned to honoring two adults in the building. First, she thanked PTO Chair Sara Anabel with a card from the students and cash collection from the staff that promised to provide “enough Mountain Dew for the summer!” And then, to the screams of students from PreK through grade 5, she called Christine Craig to the front of the gym. The student cheerleading squad returned to do a special cheer they’d created for Craig, who has worked to help eligible Title I students improve their reading before/after school, during the school day and at the school’s summer program. Colleague—and Title I teacher—Christine Bresnahan then took the microphone . Using the poem “To laugh often and much” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bresnahan recited each line and then had students indicate whether or not Mrs. Craig had influenced that part of their lives. In turn, students made their hands “laugh”, made heart signs to indicate affection, and raised both hands to demonstrate that Craig had influenced them to make healthier choices in their lives. Students from each grade took the stage and read a short essay about how Craig had helped them, and how much they would miss her. Smiling though a bit teary, Craig said, “Thank you. I love you guys. Best job ever.” Students at Chester Elementary School created a banner, complete with handprints and signatures, in honor of retiring longtime paraprofessional Christine Craig. (Submitted Photo)

(Photo by Marc St.Onge) Wagner dials up City Cup championship for Slovak Club By Chris Putz Staff Writer WESTFIELD – If Slovak Club pitcher Josh Wagner pitches like he did in the Little League Baseball City Cup championship, there is no tell- ing how far Westfield can go in All-Stars tourna- ment play this summer. Wagner struck out 15 batters, tossing a one-hit shutout to lead Slovak Club to a 6-0 champion- ship win over Advance Manufacturing Friday night at Ralph E. Sanville Memorial Field on Cross Street. “My fastball was on,” Wagner said. “I just dialed it in.” At one point, Wagner had strung together five straight Ks, capping off the fourth inning with a strikeout. He struck out four consecutive batters before turning the ball over to reliever Joe Maffia with two outs in the top of the sixth. Maffia struck out the final batter to end the game. It was a pitchers’ duel early. Advance Manufacturing pitcher Joey Jubb allowed just one hit and one run through the game’s first three innings while striking out five hitters. Slovak Club’s Robert Ninotti and Wagner each walked and advanced a base on wild pitches. Keith Drzyzga plated a run with a ground out for a 1-0 lead. Tom Knapik forced home Marc St.Onge) a run by drawing the team’s third straight walk in the inning. Andrew Galzynski smacked a single up the middle, scoring two runs for a 4-0 advan- tage. Two wild pitches later made it 5-0. Jaren Beeve walked. Jack Knapik drilled an RBI single through the left side of the infield for a 6-0 lead. Gabe Hall was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, signaling a call to the bullpen. Advance Manufacturing relief pitcher Jack Hall came in and immediately went to work, forc- ing a double play to end the inning. Tyler Goodreau fielded the ball on the left side of the infield, stepping on the third base bag and throw- ing out the runner at home plate for the second and third outs. Previous winners include Kiwanis (2013, ’16, ’18), Sons of Erin (2014), Moose Club (2015), and Commercial Distributing (2017). The City Cup championship caps off the Westfield Little League Baseball season. All-Star season is set to begin late next week. Wagner is one of several players who are going to be representing the Whip City when tournament action heats up. “We’re going to try to go to Williamsport and play in the Little League World Series,” Wagner said. “It’s going to take Slovak Club a while because of the good teams in regionals and states. We 2019 LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL CITY CUP CHAMPS just have to execute and do good.” North Shore navigates past Westfield Starfires LYNN – Tyler MacGregor went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Dominic Freeberger doubled and scored a run, and Joseph Kalafut and Louis Olivieri scored one run apiece as the North Shore Navigators slipped past the Westfield Starfires 3-1 Friday night at Fraser Field. Westfield outslugged North Shore 10-7 in the hits column, but committed two errors in the field. Sean Murphy, Thomas Joyce, and Tommy Quinn (RBI) each went 2-for-4 to lead the Starfires. Andrew Ciacciarelli and Christian Walsh (run) each doubled for Westfield (4-10). The North Shore Navigators improved to 9-3. Westfield returns to action Saturday at Nashua.
