Rock in Rio 2013 Brings Alicia Keys to the Main Stage on September 15Th Rock in Rio 2013 Brings Alicia Keys th To the Main Stage on September 15 Rio de Janeiro, March 28, 2013 – Fourteen-time Grammy® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and global superstar, Alicia Keys, has been confirmed to perform on the Main Stage of Rock in Rio on the evening of September 15th. Keys will perform just before headliner Justin Timberlake takes to the stage on the third day of the internationally renowned seven day music festival. Rolling Stone recently raved about her current tour, calling it “a show full of class and romance.” A classically trained pianist, Alicia Keys has been described as a modern-day Renaissance woman who is also an accomplished actress, New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur and powerful force in the world of philanthropy and in the global fight against HIV and AIDS. “I’m so excited to perform at Rock in Rio,” said Alicia Keys. “I have been wanting to come and perform in Brazil for a long time and doing so as a part of this legendary festival that brings people together from all over the world is a truly special experience for me. I’m looking forward to performing in front of such an incredible crowd.” Keys’ highly anticipated fifth studio album, Girl on Fire (November 27, 2012), debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #1 on the Top Digital albums chart. In addition to being the best-selling R&B album in the U.S, Girl on Fire reached number one on the iTunes album chart in 19 countries. The title track is a global top ten smash which has sold over 3 million units in single sales worldwide since its September 2012 release. The album features powerful anthems and intimate ballads driven by Keys’ signature soulful voice and personal, relatable lyrics. With inspiration from musicians like Prince, Nina Simone, Barbra Streisand, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys' style is rooted in a vintage soul with bass and synths, strongly embedded in classical piano. As one of the most successful singers of her generation, Alicia Keys has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Keys has won 14 Grammys®, ten Billboard Music Awards and five American Music Awards. She has received global recognition for her hits including "Fallin," "You Don’t Know My Name,” "If I Ain’t Got You,” "No One" and "Empire State of Mind" among many others. Since her 2001 debut album, “Songs in A Minor,” Keys has built an extensive repertoire of hits. Her second studio album, “Diary of Alicia Keys,” was released in 2003 and garnered four Grammy® Awards. In 2005, her first live album, “Unplugged” was the first "MTV Unplugged” album to be released by a female recording artist. Her third studio album, “As I Am” debuted at the Billboard 200, selling 742, 000 copies in just the first week. In late 2009, Keys released her fourth studio album, “The Element of Freedom” which was certified platinum in just one month. Alicia Keys is the first female R&B artist to have three consecutive albums at the top of the Billboard 200. Among the many awards she has won: 11 Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, three World Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, three MTV Europe Awards, two Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards, three BET Awards, fourteen NAACP Image Awards, seven Soul Train Music Awards, two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, two People's Choice Awards and a My VH1 Award. The festival has brought together some 6,511,300 spectators, all cheering to the sound of the 968 artists that have taken part. It has totaled over 980 hours of music, broadcast to more than 1 billion viewers in 200 countries via TV and internet. Rock in Rio also collects records on social networks, in the music festival category. In 2011, the event was part of Twitter’s Trending Topics in 13 countries. Using music as a universal language that unites people around the world, Rock in Rio is a communication channel of pure emotion and social and environmental causes. One of its pillars of communication is the social project Por Um Mundo Melhor (For a Better World). Created in 2001, in Rio de Janeiro, the project has already benefitted thousands of people over the 12 editions, in Brazil, Portugal, Spain and a range of other companies, thanks to the investments from ticket sales and the actions promoted by event partners, which total US$ 16.6 million. Initiatives included the planting of over 119,000 trees; a school built in Tanzania, and a health center established in Maranhão. Rock in Rio is also responsible for educating 3,200 primary school students in Rio de Janeiro; installing 760 solar panels in schools in Portugal; established 14 sensorial rooms in NGOs for children with mental and visual disabilities, among many other initiatives. In 2011, actions part of the “For a Better World” project flew under the banner of music as the foundation in the formation of youths. By mobilizing the population and its partners, some 2,200 musical instruments were donated to more than 150 NGOs throughout Brazil that work with music as an educative tool; 10 music rooms were established in schools part of the Rio de Janeiro city education network with 30 teachers were trained using the “O Passo” methodology; and 40 youths were trained as Luthier assistants (professionals specialized in the manufacture and maintenance of musical instruments). Furthermore, since 2006, Rock in Rio has been committed to compensating for 100% of the event’s CO2 emissions – audited by Delloite – and to implementing a major waste management plan, while also investing in an emission reduction plan that includes the preparation of a manual of good practices for sponsors and suppliers, which is being improved with each new edition and is employed in all the countries that stage the event. During the sale of the Rock in Rio Card, in October 2012, tickets to the festival sold out in just 52 minutes – a new record. Ticket prices vary from BRL 260 (full-price) to BRL 130 (half-price). Keys will kick off her More Myself Tour at BAM, in support of her new book, which will be published on the same date (March 31). As one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, Alicia Keys has captured audiences with her heartfelt lyrics, extraordinary vocal range, and soul-stirring piano compositions. Away from the spotlight, she privately grappled with heartache, her challenging and complex relationship with her father, her people-pleasing nature that characterized her early life and career, the loss of privacy, and the oppressive expectations of female perfection, some of which she put on herself. More of Myself is Alicia’s journey from childhood to now: at once a riveting account and a clarion call to readers to define themselves in a world that rarely encourages a true and unique identity.

  • It's the Girl
“It’s the Girl”—The Boswell Sisters with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra (1931) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by David W. McCain (guest post)* The Boswell Sisters Original label Sheet music The date was July 8, 1931. The place was New York City. A trio of sisters from New Orleans named Martha, Connie and Vet--the Boswell Sisters--arrived at the studios of Brunswick Records to record a song titled “It’s the Girl,” written by Abel Baer and Dave Oppenheim. During the Great Depression records were not selling well. Vet Boswell described the Boswells’ recording sessions as “icing on the cake,” explaining that radio and stage appearances were far more financially lucrative. Recording artists at this time were paid a flat rate with no royalties. Radio quickly established the Boswell Sisters as household names in America during the Depression, but records spread their fame abroad. When the Boswell Sisters toured England and Holland in 1933 and 1935, it was their recordings which made them a top box office draw. By the date of their recording “It’s the Girl,” the Boswells knew who to request as their accompanists. Only four months earlier at their very first session for Brunswick (March 19, 1931), a house orchestra comprised of Bob Effros (trumpet); Tommy Dorsey (trombone); Jimmy Dorsey (clarinet); Arthur Schutt (piano); Dick McDonough (guitar); Joe Tarto (string bass) and Stan King (drums) had accompanied the Boswell Sisters on “Whad’ja Do To Me?” and “When I Take My Sugar to Tea.” This recording was released as Brunswick 6083. Vet Boswell recalled that after the first run-through of this session, the Boswells received a standing ovation as well as cheers and whistles from “the boys” who accompanied them.

  • Alicia Keys About Girl on Fire
! ALICIA KEYS ABOUT GIRL ON FIRE With the arrival of her fifth studio album, GIRL ON FIRE, (available November 27th), Alicia Keys emerges stronger and wiser— taking the reins of her career in a way she never has before. In this album, you hear an artist breaking free and exploring new worlds. Vibrant and soulful, energetic and intimate, GIRL ON FIRE is built to move you, physically and emotionally. “This album is about new beginnings, new perspectives and fresh starts,” says Keys. “There is something really empowering about finding your own inner strength— stripping away all the energy that no longer works for you and taking full control of how you want to live.” Eleven years ago, the tough girl from Hell’s Kitchen with the golden voice and mad piano skills arrived. After years of struggling to get an album released, Keys got the chance to perform “Fallin’” from her debut album, SONGS IN A MINOR, on The Oprah Winfrey Show… and a star was born. She spent the next ten years running on a treadmill of success: Platinum records. Sold-out concerts. World tours. 14 Grammy awards. Movie deals. Best-selling books. Philanthropic missions. Fans kept singing along, hit after hit: “No One,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” “Empire State of Mind,” among many others. Life eventually caught up to Keys for all its heartbreak and beauty: she lost an inspiration with her grandmother’s passing; she parted ways with her longtime manager, Jeff Robinson; she married artist and producer, Swizz Beatz, and together had a beautiful baby boy, Egypt.

Using Visual Basic for Application scripts, I compile a dataset that includes profanity counts from 2688 songs (1970-2012) and 2186 movies (1980-2012) in order to analyze the effect of the Parental Advisory Label. This study finds that, using differences-in-differences estimators, there was a decrease in profanity in popular music following the adoption of the label. Furthermore, after evaluating the survival characteristics of number one hits, we find significant reductions in the longevity of songs with profanity; which implies the decrease in profanity following the labeling may be due to an artist response to consumer preferences.
