You will be visiting Michigan’s west side and the community of Grand Rapids, historically known for its contributions to design, and furniture making in particular. West Michigan is home to companies such as Steelcase, Haworth and Herman Miller – it is often said that there isn’t an uncomfortable chair anywhere in Grand Rapids. While that may be something of an exaggeration, it isn’t an exaggeration to say that this is a high-quality “maker community,” and you will see that in everything from the arts to the beer! The maker culture together with a highly walkable downtown make Grand Rapids an ideal setting for NASAA Assembly 2016. The locale strikes the perfect balance of excitement, comfort and creativity conducive to rich learning experiences during the day and fun entertainment in the evening.

Mountaineer Messenger FEBRUARY 2013 Learning & Living for the Glory of God What We’ve Been Up To... 2nd & 5th Grades Visit Meijer Gardens The 2nd and 5th graders celebrated their “Christmas Around the World” social studies unit with a field trip to Frederik Meijer Gardens. They enjoyed looking at the trees decorated to represent countries they had studied. The spider webs on the tree for Germany reminded the kids of the spiders they had made to decorate their own tree in the 5th grade classroom. The weather was beautiful for December, so students were also able to spend time exploring the outdoor Children’s Garden. Alayna VanderStel, Lydia Vincent, Briquell Jipping, & Brieanna Alsum 4th Grade Visits Central Reformed Church The 4th grade field trip to the Central Reformed Church in Grand Rapids is a favorite each year and this year was no exception. Students got to learn how pipe organs work and they got to hear some amazing music. Afterward, the class headed to the Grand Rapids Public Museum to learn about the three tribes of Michigan Indians. The guide was very impressed by how much information this class already knew and how excited they were to learn more about these first inhabitants of Michigan. Kindergarten Goes to the Critter Barn “Oink! Quack! Moo! Neigh!” “Oooh! Ahh! Yikes! Yay” Reece Alsum is “out of this world!” This is what the critters say. Pettit’s “critters,” watching, say! Run! Flap! Cuddle! Chew! Smile! Touch! Giggle, too! This is what the critters do. This is what young learners do! 1 Cover: Jayda Steenbergen & Audra Kaptein Micah Maartense & his grandmother Emma Moelker & her grandfather Megan Vos & her grandmother Grandparents Day 2012 was a great success! • Tour the Hotel and Experience Days Gone By
TourA History of the amwaythe grand Hotel plaza hotel The Amway Grand Plaza Hotel invites you to tour the hotel and experience days gone by. • Look for this symbol for points of interest. Grand Plaza East Tour • Begin your tour facing the REGISTRATION DESK in the Main Entrance off Pearl Street. The focal point is the painting behind the desk of a panoramic view of the city skyline from the Grand River. This painting is entitled “Grand Reflections” by local artist Mark Wilkens. The graceful mahogany arches and vaulted gold leaf dome ceiling were added during a renovation in 1998 to mirror the beauty of the original Pantlind wing with its English Adams Architecture. If you turn around to your left, you’ll notice that behind the Concierge Desk, there is a Howard Miller clock made of brass and acrylic and designed by Arthur Umanoff Associates. Across from the Registration Area, the inviting GRAND STAIRWAY rises above the airy setting of the GARDEN COURT LOUNGE. So, start your walk with a climb! At the head of the staircase, look over the impressive lower level. Thousands of seasonal plants, flowers, and trees are constantly maintained throughout the hotel to create a year-round, natural environment. Head to your right toward the original, more traditional wing of the hotel. SPLENDOR AND DRAMA Continue on into the original PANTLIND HOTEL structure to the SOUTH CONCOURSE LEVEL, which overlooks the Pantlind Lobby. At the railing, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the reconstructed portion of the original hotel. The three magnificent chandeliers came from Czechoslovakia and are made of Austrian crystal— a type that retains its brilliance, color, and luster.
