This issue of the Newsletter contains information about the work being done to promote literacy and reading, also details of reading projects, literacy de- velopments and presentations from several parts of the world, all clear evidence that literacy and read- ing are on the agenda in public libraries. The presen- tations are mostly written by members and associ- ates and the views expressed in these articles are to be regarded as the author’s perception. I hope you will find something interesting in this issue of the newsletter. There is a long tradition in the Netherlands to combine local and national activities in nationwide programmes and campaigns. The local activities and connections are important to have maximum involvement of the local librar- ies and communities; the na- tional level is important to attract partners and funding, and have national exposure in the media.
